Pre-race routine:

Woke up about 5:15 and went to the restroom at the campsite. Brushed my teeth and splashed some water on my face. Got on the onesy and then got my sheeyot together. Barb (RunningJayHawk) and Mike showed up. We made our way to transition. I set up my stuff and ...
Event warmup:

Went for a short swim. Talked to AmyJo and Craig and Josh and a few others.
Swim
  • 56m 33s
  • 2112 yards
  • 02m 41s / 100 yards
Comments:

Swim was awesome. I really enjoyed it. My goal was to be the last in my AG in the water. Mission accomplished. The problem with that is that you tend to be one of the last ones outta the water. I think I was like 89/100 in my AG out of the water. I couldn't navigate fo' sheet. I ended up BEHIND one of the lifeguards who didn't know I was there until I asked him where the finish was. He told me and I went.
What would you do differently?:

Better navigation. Otherwise nothing. An enjoyable swim. Had I not swam !.7 miles I would've been much happier.
Transition 1
  • 03m 19s
Comments:

Forgot to clip my helmet. Whoops. I got my suit off and dried off and then put on my socks and shoes. Threw on the helmet and made sure I had everything. Forgot the Rocktane and to eat an orange I had peeled and packed away for T1. Oh well. Oh yeah I forgot to put endurolytes in my bento box, so I had to dig into my transition bag for the bottle.
What would you do differently?:

CLip my helmet. Eat the orange. Not forget to put Endurolyes in my bento box.
Bike
  • 3h 29m 47s
  • 56 miles
  • 16.02 mile/hr
Comments:

Well what can I say about the bike. The course was uber hilly and the wind was very strong. One of the water stations was about a quarter way up one of the biggest hills, which allegedly caused accidents. I saw a near accident at the site on my way back. A shouting match ensued.

At mile 30 my small chain ring broke. Not sure what happened but it was spinnning away with no grab. Came to a stop, flipped the bike and went to work. I tried to tighten the cog but I had no tools so I decided to try the big chain ring. MONEY! So from mile 30 on I was in big chain ring. The hills made that tough but I had no choice. Had to stand on some of the bigger hills.

Oh and my knee started hurting at mile 15. Great. For those who don't know, my left knee tends to give me problems because of some old war wounds. (Not really war wounds).

Oh and had to stop at the portajohn for a few minutes at the beginning of the third leg.
What would you do differently?:

Not have a bike problem. Train on hills more because they hurt. I found myself going as low as 6 or 7 mph on some.
Transition 2
  • 04m 43s
Comments:

I took my time. Had a Pop Tart, some water and then put on my shoes and took off the gloves and helmet and such. Stretched and then I was off.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. It was a nice little break.
Run
  • 1h 34m 12s

Comments:

The course was awesome and, after the first loop I decided to kick it up a notch. I took off and felt like I was on the wind. I was passing TONS of people left and right. It was all coming together. At the end of the first lap they were saying the runners were done because of lightning but nobody really stopped a group of us so we just kept going. So ... I caught up and passed LisaC and Amyjo (AmyjoTris) and Craig (Firstnet 911) and, at mile 11, they said to stop. I said I would finish and be back in 16 minutes but they told me if I kept going I would be DQ'd. I should've done it anyway.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. One of my best triathlon runs. I was mooovin' ...
Post race
Warm down:

I wasn't very happy they pulled me off the course in the midst of one of my better tri runs. So I went and gathered my stuff and bike and went back to the campsite. Showered and deodorized and then we drove home.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of hill training. It was tough.

Event comments:

I crossed and one of the chip-takers said it was 1:15 on the nose. The missus said a couple minutes later that it was 1:17.

I left at 7:06 a.m. and finished at 1:15 p.m. That, to me, says 6:09. I would've knocked it out in 6:25-6:30. Not happy.

I refuse to rate this race. The course and volunteers were frickin' awesome. The organization, water-stop setup on the bike (and run for that matter) was less than stellar. And I thought the decision to pull the plug because of some dark clouds was a bit premature.

Really, I have nobody to blame but myself. If I would've finished in 5:30 I would've finished. AS it were, my 6:30ish wasn't good enough.

Good to see all the BTers in the hizzy. Great to meet a lot of you for the first time and see a lot of you again!!!

So they said if you finished you would be DQ'ed.  Does that not make any sense to anyone but me?  That really sucks man.  Bummer for sure.  Sounds like a lot of things went really crappy out there

Sounds like you had a good race, notwithstanding the crappy ending, pulling the big ring on those hills and then running that well.

BUMMER mate.

What's the plan for the next one?

Too bad about the race cancellation.  Sounds like you were having a good run.   I'm sure that Tyr transition bag knocked a few minutes off of your time too.

Sucks that they pulled you off the course...sounds like you were having a really good run.  The bike problems certainly didn't help your time.  So now that you know you can do it (and do it well), when are you signing up for your next one?

Oh, man, that's painfully close to the finish to be pulled off the course!  You must have managed nutrition and pacing well to be nice and strong through the run.  Great Job!!

Where were Craig and AmyJo?  I assume they got yanked off the course as well?

Tough break on being pulled.  I was fortunate to have finished but was witness to a lot of unhappy racers.  Peeps just have to understand that the RD had to make the call for everyones safety.  They can't wait for someone to get zapped by lightening to make the call.

Still a good race for you!  6:30 is/would have been an honorable finish time, particularly on this tough course.
Better luck next time.

Tough call to make ... but better to err on the side of caution than to have someone hit by lightening (<=another reason to get a carbon fiber bike? )

The best news of the day has to be that you had the gas at the end to pass folks and keep going.  That says a lot about your fitness level (which is harder to better sometimes than your swim stroke or cycling).

Great job at the race, Tony, and very entertaining race report. I saw you at the beginning of the run course, and your goggles cracked me up! I didn't know you ran with them, too. Did you put them on when it started to rain?

Nice to meet you! Congrats on doing so well at your first half!

Nice job, flattie! I saw you a couple times on the run course but didn't even notice goggles, I must've assumed they were sun glasses! Whoops. Hey thanks for the hotel room, we ended up leaving the TV - it was only 720i and we wanted a 1080p. Better luck next time I guess

Oh- the guy I borrowed my wetsuit from said on Friday he was hoping for 5:20 [he didn't know much about the course] and when I talked to him after the race he said he changed his goal to sub-6. He has 5 full Ironman and in the teens for halfs under his belt; I'm assuming lots of people were surprised by the challenge of the course. Based off your performance here I think you could go sub-6 on an easier [heh, easier.. they're all hard!] course no problem! Best of luck to you in Oklahoma!

You're saying I'm a dog? Thanks though. Ibuprofin, some endurolytes and a Roctane will do that to a body.
