Pre-race routine:

Arrived in Madison on Thursday for a birthday dinner with Amy. Had a great dinner and dessert. Friday AM was the gatoraid swim, registration, and the athletes dinner.

Since Amy did not have a dinner ticket, we were first in line for dinner. I kept saying this was the only time I would ever lead the pack :)

**Note to 2009 racers- buy extra dinner tickets at registration. Even though they say that you can buy them at registration, they were sold out. If you buy them during the online registration and don't end up needing them, you can sell them on site to others.***

We stayed at the Clarion and used the shuttle bus. It's a great place to stay and will be there next year. They even had a special 0400 IM breakfast on Sunday.
Event warmup:

Shuttled in, checked SN bags and headed to body marking. Ran into MUTri after he was marked and added "SINGLE" to his right calf. Althought he did not get a date, he did get some good comments :)

Kissed Amy and the kids and headed to the swim start.
Swim
  • 1h 22m 3s
  • 4224 yards
  • 01m 56s / 100 yards
Comments:

In 2007 I had almost no contact on the swim and actually complained that I missed the "washing machine". Be careful what you wish for....I was fully pummeled this time. It was funny because the most violent athletes were the women. Each time I go hit I'd look up and see a red swim cap.
What would you do differently?:

Swim volume was down over 100K yards from 2007, was pleased to be 1 minute faster than last year.
Transition 1
  • 10m 51s
Comments:

It's a long run up the helix, and my bike was in the second rack which meant I had to run almost 400 yards with the bike.
Bike
  • 7h 16m 31s
  • 112 miles
  • 15.39 mile/hr
Comments:

Had a great nutrition plan that worked well for the majority of the ride. The first lap went well and I was having fun with the volunteers and spectators. Yelling "I can't hear you" or "more cowbell please" was usually enough to get them fired up and making noise.

Coming into the area where the course split- (second loop to the left, first loop to the right) I got passed by the pace car. I looked back and saw the leader about 200 yards back and decided that I was not getting lapped this year. I gave it everything I had and held him off until the turn :)
Hitting the cross plains aid station the pirates yelled " You better mention us in your race report"

You have been mentioned :) The volunteers were awesome all day!

I was much quieter the second lap after the cramps started. The legs held up until the last hill (Garfoot) where, half way up the hill they seized. I stopped and streached at the same point as 07!
Finished the second loop and headed back into Madisom. It was nice to have the wind at my back for the home streach.
What would you do differently?:

Ride more. I only had one 100 mile ride this year.
Transition 2
  • 07m 13s
Comments:

Actually felt great to be off the bike and to start the run
Run
  • 6h 15m 36s
  • 26.2 miles
  • 14m 20s  min/mile
Comments:

My goal for the last 365 days was to eat $500 of cookies on the run. It was a complete surprise when there were no cookies this year.

Plan B was to use gatoraid, and that went well and I felt great for the first 10 miles. Then the cramps started and the wheels fell off the bus. I ran/walked the second half and just enjoyed the day. The run course is beautiful so I just soaked it all in.

The people in the TriWisconsin tent were eating Oreos when I passed, I stopped and got one on the first lap and two on the second lap. They really looked surprised when I stopped and asked for cookies.

Started running the last mile and saw Mom and the kids just before the final turn. Gave them hugs and headed for the finish.
One catcher tried to catch me, but Amy pushed him to the side and caught me. It was nice to get a big hug at the end of a long day.
What would you do differently?:

Run more- what can I expect with a 14 mile long run going into the IM.
Post race
Warm down:

Found the family and my son had a big cookie waiting for me. Got some pizza and walked for a while then collected the bags and bike and headed back to the hotel.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Time.
I met a special person last fall that changed my focus and put life into perspective. Having a sig other that lives 2 hours away makes finding traing time hard.
I knew going into Moo that my training volume was down, but it was my decision and I don't regret it for a second. I look forward to supporting her in the first IM at Moo 09.

Event comments:

Great race, great people, great experience.

Your cramps seized up the bike and then you continued to have some trouble on the run, but you stuck with it and beat your time from last year by a big margin. You had a great race and set an awesome example for your kids. Congratulations!!! What a great race!

Nice job Craig. I got out of the water at almost the same time, but I didn't see you. I think I saw you at the start of your second lap, but I was kinda zoned out at the time.

Anyhow, great job, and next year we can volunteer and drink more beer!!!!!

Oh, and for the record, you are correct, getting a hug from Amy at the end made the whole thing worthwhile!!!!

Congrats, Ironman. Wow, what a season for you. I am impressed beyond words. You are an impressive endurance athlete. Glad I got to see you on the course several times. The Donkey Nation is proud.

Now onto this woman "problem" you got....the way I see it, you got two choices, ya see....but seriously, AmyJo was more than a bit concerned about you and her impact on your training schedule this last year. You know how to fix that, right? You both gotta race together next year. Do we have confirmation of your participation, Mister '3 in a row'???

Awesome job beating your time from last year by like 30 minutes and not really training for the darn thing.  You make it look so easy.  Sorry about the cookies.  I will bring you some next time I see you.  Take it easy this week, then get back at it
