Subject: How do you remember what your swim workout is?

I've now come across a lot of varied swim programs. Most of them are multipart, meaning that in one day, you'll warm up, do some drills, kicking, intervals, more drills, and cooldown. It gets pretty complicated pretty fast.

How do you all keep track of what the workout is? I tried printing out some workouts in miniature form and "laminating" them with tape, but I lost the little cutout after a week or two. When I try and remember what the entire workout is, I have no chance unless it's a very, very straightforward one. (Like swim 1600meters nonstop.)

How do you all keep track of what intervals at what pace and what rest periods you have to do in today's workout? Do you just memorize it all, or do you use some sort of aid, like a notebook (waterproof?) or something along those lines?

My old master's team wrote the workout on a dry erase board.  Maybe you can get a mini one like the kind the college kids hang on their doors?

I have a cheapo, small whiteboard. When I have a workout I want to make sure I remember correctly, I write my workout on it the night before, and then I put it right up next to the edge and I'm good to go.  I happened to have the whiteboard already, so I use it.  Another method is to put it in a ziplock bag or a document protector.

this means I can only use it once, but I usually just get it wet and stick it on a kickboard.

Good tips from everyone -- another one is to wet a kick board, prop it up and stick the paper directly to it.  Works pretty well if you don't have access to a plastic bag.

You can also use 'Workouts in a binder' by Gale Bernhardt -- I see that at a lot of pools.

KISS concept .....

I don't do complicated workouts and I usually make them up while driving to the pool (and sometimes adjust them half way thru). Easy to remember or make up

as others have said, myself, and a lot of the other swimmers at denison, write it on white paper with a pencil (most pens will run), dip it in the water and then either stick it too the pool deck or a kickboard.

I'm about about to save your life dude.  All you gotta do is get a little post-it note, write down your workout,  and put it in a little ziplock bag on the edge of the pool.  I will seriously use one pad of post its and the same ziplock bag for like at least 6 months at a time.

Ditto on this one... works great for me!  Can simply reuse the baggy and go!

If my coach is there he write it on the whiteboard and reminds us.

When I go in without him I either use one in a laminated book I got from www.triswimcoach.com or write my own on the board.  I have a specific focus right now for distance so I'm doing a lot of intervals and maintaining a particular distance with effort at speed/intensity to that distance .

You may find that there is an underlying pattern to the workouts.  Combinations of 300, 400 and 500 yards are pretty common.

Most of my workouts are a little under 1 minute per lap, so if I'm trying to do 12x100, I'll shoot to start each 100 on either 1:50 or 1:55 and know that I'll pick up 1 or 2 minutes on the set.

x2 wet the back of if it a teeny tiny bit and it will stick to the wall.  Usually I just memorize them though.

x2. My workout is whatever I end up doing. And I place just fine in the swim leg.

I use triathletes workouts in a box.  They are a bunch of premade workouts on laminated 3 x 5's that I wet and stick to a kickboard.

I have a transparent clipboard that I got for like 3$ somewhere.  I write my workouts in grease pencil right on the clipboard and I have a grease pencil that I covered in Duct Tape so that I can write adjustments/repeat times when I'm in the pool.

Then I take it home, note the workouts and clean off the clipboard.

Best and cheapest way to accurately log your workouts.

I suppose it takes some practice but I usually remember the workout too. I do it backwards though. The coach at masters writes the workout on the board, I do it, then try to remember and write it down when I get home. Most of my workouts are detailed in my log. However, after doing that for a while now, when I'm setting up a workout on my own I can remember it pretty well too.

I print it out and stick it in a plastic sleeve.  Then I throw it in my pool bag.  I make the workouts up on Excel and can put 4-6 on one page.  Works great.

I just memorize it.  It was hard at first, but seems to get easier after a while.  I still mess it up some of the details, but I'm sure to remember the total yards, so at least I swim the right distance.

Granted, I also look at it a half dozen times, including right before I leave the car before going in, to make sure it sinks in.

When i swim, i bring my inhaler with me to the pool, so i just write the workout on a piece of paper and put it into a ziploc baggie with my inhaler.
