Overall Rank = 37/150

Age Group Rank = 8/25
Pre-race routine:

Slept really well the night before. Up at 6:45, showered, ate half of a peanut butter and banana sandwich, and drove a mile to get to the race site by 8 for a 10:00 start time.
Event warmup:

Set up my transition area, ate the other half of my sandwich, and swam for a few minutes to get used to the water. Good thing because it felt colder than the day before! This was my fourth tri and first of season two. Really excited to be there and I felt calm and ready instead of being on edge about the swim.
Swim
  • 18m 17s
  • 820 yards
  • 02m 14s / 100 yards
Comments:

First swim where I swam the majority of it using freestyle. I did switch to breaststroke to sight, but that was it. Felt good about this swim and it was by best one so far. Kind of disappointed with my time, but I think I'm finally over being nervous about open water swimming and panicking again in the water so it'll only get better from here.
What would you do differently?:

Could've done a better job navigating. I don't think I did a very good job of swimming straight to the buoys.
Transition 1
  • 01m 50s
Comments:

OK T1. No problems getting the wetsuit off. Just felt awkward and out of practice. My fault for not running through transitions before race day.
What would you do differently?:

Practice before race day.
Bike

Comments:

My goal was to push to my fitness limit on the bike and I accomplished that. Pushed hard the whole time and I felt like I did a good job with the hills. Still having trouble with slowing down too much to turn and there was one section of the course where I braked and coasted for a bit, but I'm starting to feel a lot more comfortable on the bike and this is the first time where I felt like my fitness was my limiter instead of my biking confidence. Yay :) I really enjoyed the bike course. Good roads, I liked the rolling hills, and going over the short section across the lake.
What would you do differently?:

Just ride, baby, ride.
Transition 2
  • 01m 21s
Comments:

43/150
What would you do differently?:

Again, practice before race day.
Run
  • 25m 19s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 08m 08s  min/mile
Comments:

Just an OK run for me. My legs were feeling it after being on the bike. Not many flat sections, seemed like we were always going up or down a hill, and it was rough running through the rooty, wooded section. First time I felt better on the bike than the run. :) I did get passed by a 21 year old at the end and I wasn't too happy about that.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing really. I'm happy with my training mileage and feel good about the run. Not a great 5K time for me, but I think it was a challenging course.
Post race
Warm down:

Came down the finisher's chute and heard some of the VAMDBTTC members cheering for me :) Ate some pizza, Mike & Ikes, and chilled at the race site until the end of the awards ceremony. Beautiful day for a race.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Biking fitness.

Event comments:

Good race, great course, fun race shirts, and decent post race food. I also liked doing a race early in the season.

Great job!!

I love to hear that you were comfortable in the water.  That is a big step to getting faster there!

And I love that you felt that you pushed the bike.

Awesome result and congrats on the both the AG and overall placings!

Great job pushing yourself like you wanted to in the water and on the bike... and by all accounts that swim was long so no need to be disappointed with your time on it.  The podium isn't far, Traci... super start to the year!!

Great race. It's always nice with everything "clicks" at a race (especially an early season one). Don't sweat the swim time those distances are never exact. It looks like you have a great foundation for the rest of the season.

PS: I also LOVE peanut butter and banana sandwiches!!
