Precipitation
Total Time = 5h 30m 4s
Overall Rank = 271/573
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 52/85
Pre-race routine:

Woke up quick, at about 5, ready fo all that jive. Actually got up at 445 and showered as always. Made sure I had everything and we were off.
Event warmup:

Went out for a swim just prior to starting.

But that wa after all the drama. The race was supposed to start with the full at 7am. About 630 the skies opened up and the downpour began. So they delayed the start becquse of flooding o. The bike course. Then they started talking about a swim/run/swim. Crap. About 745 the rain slowed and they announced the full would start at 8 and half would be at 815. Annnnd off we go!

Oh yeah, the entire race site was basically flooded so it was a bigtime mudfest!
Swim
  • 39m 56s
  • 2112 yards
  • 01m 53s / 100 yards
Comments:

The water on the way out was shallow enough that you could stand up. I didnt but people in front of me did and i kept swimming into them. The firs 200 was a brutal wash. Fi ally cleared ou at the end of the out leg because it got deep enough that people had to swim.

This was my best HIM swim time ever but it didnt feel really smooth. Still, i was fairly happy. Except the asshats standing up every 10 feet. Its not an aquajog, fu**ers!
What would you do differently?:

Swim faster, avoid the bluehairs wih their noodles walking.
Transition 1
  • 02m 52s
Comments:

Welp itd rained like a motherbitch so my socks were soaked through. Oh well. Took a second to eat an uncrustable. It was raining still. It felt good to come out of the water with peeps from my wave for once!
What would you do differently?:

Nothing except put the shoes and socks in a plastic bag.
Bike
  • 2h 58m 28s
  • 56 miles
  • 18.83 mile/hr
Comments:

Rode the first six miles in spitting rain and getting sprayed by others wheels. At mile 6 or 7 we had to get off our bikes and carry them around a flooded area of a street. Volunteers were feverishly sweeping the water off the road but it was pretty deep. Crazy. Rode with Brad from St. Louis for awhile. Stopped at halfway to drain the main vein. On the way back decided to hammer a little. I was way behind so I needed to play catchup. Came into t2 smilin and enjoyin life.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. It was slower than Id have liked but dadgummit that was fun!
Transition 2
  • 03m 12s
Comments:

Ran to my spot and racked my bike. Packed six endurolytes into a pillbox for the run and put downed three Ibuprofin. Preemptive anti-inflammatories! Stopped to drain the lizard one more time and off I went. Forgot my Garmin but didnt want to waste time.
What would you do differently?:

Remember my Garmin.
Run
  • 1h 45m 36s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 08m 04s  min/mile
Comments:

The goal was just to run 9:00s and take it easy on the foot. Yeah since I forgot my Garmin in T2 I didnt know how fasT I was running. At the mile 1 marker I was about a 7:55 and felt fine. Figured Id keep the pace until it started to hurt.

That was about mile 4. But the pain wasnt that bad so I HTFU'd and kept the pace. The goal became a 1:44 instead of a 1:57. At halfway I was at 52 flat so I was right on pace! That lasted until about mile 10. When my gut started hurting from all the gels I was eating. But I was starving! So to avoid revisiting my gels I slowed a little. Tis better to slow and not yak than yak at all.

Saw Wavedog and Tom (climbin5414) and TxMPGal who were FLYING! Saw LisaC and LindaKC and a few others.

The run was good except having to run through ankle-deep puddles the whole way. Oh well, HTFU right! We're triathletes. Thats what we do.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe ease up off all the gels. That crap is still lodged in my gullet. Seriously I cant get it out. I need a bottle of Ex Lax, the ability to text Zilla, about a half-hour and indoor plumbing an Ill be good as new.
Post race
Warm down:

Got food and went over to the speedforrent ten with Robyn and Wave and chilled. Went and showered at the hotel and then layed down for a while.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Rain, lack of muscles and The Bee Gees. Crazy Australian bastards. Or New Zealanders. Whatever.

Event comments:

Great race! Road trip for me and Wave, got to see Robyn and the dogs and had a good time at a race of epic precipitations!

Edit: this is a pr by nearly 30 minutes for me. Amazing what a little training can do for a body.

I like this. Mile 10 was where it all went really south for me, too. Eh, it was a long day. It was good to see you out there! Good race and congrats on the PR!!!

Good job and congrats on the race!  Note the LindaKC commented on the chip and seal along with the potholes. That was a pretty brutal 30 mile stretch.  The crew I was with all let out a sigh of relief when we got back on ashpalt.  Thoughts?

Nice job, Tony! I think I saw you pass me on about mile 1.5 of the run. Then I saw you run past me really fast after the turn. I'll trade you some swim lessons for some running lessons! Seriously- great running and nice P.R. I'm trying to figure out how to lambaste myself in a race report.

You rawk dude....

Is this a flat course?  I think I could had edged you out of the water, kept up on the bike, but you would have killed me on the run...  Nice pace and great work.
