Pre-race routine:

Drove up from Colorado Springs to Boulder for packet pick up. Then sluffed it over to Cathy's (Cogirl) met her and Macdaddy and Kristin who flew in from Tejas to do the race. Was really tired. I've been running all week trying to get the hell out of town for RAAM. It's been crazy as all get out. All I wanted to do was get to Cathy's and go to sleep. Hung around there and then we went to Ciznetti's the crazy Italian buffet restaurant. Carbo loaded and REALLY wanted to sleep. Woke up at 4:30 and left by 5:08 with Kristin and road to the race. Got there at the perfect time. Hardly any bikes in the transition area. Was able to set up everything just the way I wanted and then A MASS OF FRIGGIN'BODIES. There was about 1,000 people registered for this race. Crazy. Got body marked. Peed. Yeahh no dehydration. Then went for a 100 m swim sans wetsuit. The water felt GREAT. But I chickened out and wore the wetsuit for buoyancy. Met a lot of people. Talked. Hung out. Ate bananna, blueberries and yogurt. Had put my waterbottle filled with gatorade in Cathy's freezer and it was COLD. Woo Hoo. Everything went smoothly.
Event warmup:

Went swimming.
Swim
  • 18m 28s
  • 750 meters
  • 02m 28s / 100 meters
Comments:

I KICKED ASS ON THE SWIM. Time is an estimate but when I looked down at my watch it said 14 minutes. Woo Hoo. I started at the front of the pack but got run over by a whole lot of people who were going out too fast. By the time I rounded the furthest buoy I was hauling much ass and passing people like they were standing still. Caught up with stragglers from two waves in front of me. Race started off great. I was going to have my best time ever.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. I left the pack where themselves out and then hauled ass on the home stretch. Woo Hoo. Couldn't draft cause hey there was no one in front of me! :) It was awesome. Best swim so far.
Transition 1
  • 03m 17s
Comments:

First T1 with clipless pedals. Had to stop to make sure my shoes were strapped in. But all was good. No cramping on the bike felt good. Struggled some up the first hill. Didn't want to go too hard still afraid of cramping and I knew the course had some wicked downhills so I would be fine. Didn't mind going slow on the uphill got passed a lot but caught up with most. Now the moment of truth. I look up after the first turn to see Joe walking back carrying his bike. Here's the place where you say you're in a race you've just had your best swim ever and you're going for a great bike time to finish with a strong run. Your chasing a PR do you stop for a fellow B.T member? Hell yeah. Didn't even bat an eye. Asked Joe if he had everything he needed. His tube was busted. Gave him my pump. Watched as he tried to pump air in the tire. Nothing. Waited some more. Then Joe finally gave me the pump back. I can tell he was pissed. I felt so sorry for him. I wanted him to have a good race. But it wasn't meant to be. So I kept riding. Caught everyone on the down hill then started cramping so coasted the last four miles. Not bad bike ride not the best.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. I would stop for Joe again. Or any Bter. Anyone else? Probably not. Maybe not coast so much at the end? But didn't want to take a chance on cramping.
Bike
  • 1h 10m 14s
  • 17 miles
  • 14.52 mile/hr
Transition 2
  • 02m 1s
Comments:

Changed socks? Don't know why I did that. But my feet were still wet from the swim. Then put on shoes and race number and I was outta' there.
What would you do differently?:

Not change socks? Didn't take me that long.
Run
  • 45m 3s
  • 3.12 miles
  • 14m 26s  min/mile
Comments:

I had a little cramping on the bike so by the time I got to the run the legs were hurting. But I dug deep and gutted it out promising myself I wouldn't stop until the turn around. But then a mile into the run Just felt a second wind and I actually ran home. Didn't come in too far behind Kristin who had passed me on the bike when I helped Joe. All was good. This girl was running with me boy she was wheezing and having a hard time. Me, none of that. I was cruising man. It was effortless. I felt so good and felt I could have kept running. Woo Hoo. I'm getting the hang of this thing! :)
What would you do differently?:

Run a teensy bit faster. Takes too long to get a rhythm going.
Post race
Warm down:

Drank beer, ate, hung out with the B.T. crew. Kristin was drooling over these two guys we met earlier in our swim wave. Guy came over to me cause he remembered me from Rattlesnake last year. He had a friend a hottie fireman. We had fun. Then hopped in Hercules and drove to the Springs.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Nothing really. I had a great race.

Event comments:

What a great friggin' race. It was awesome. So many first timers. So many Bters. Food beer sun screen. Woo Hoo. Everything was amazing. I just had the best time. It reminded me of why I train racking up pink squares like a crazy women everyday. I love this sport. Woo Hoo.

Great report...I was the one who came up to you while you were in the food line and talked for a minute. This was my first Triathlon. It never would have been possible without BT.

Hey Ovetta, I finally got to put a face w/ a name. Of course, you were cruising through that tight left hander just before T2 when I saw you, we really didn't get to chat

Great race report!

Way to go Ovetta - nice race!!!!  Sounds like you were tearing it up on the bike course after helping Joe out.

I'm bummed that I couldn't stick around and chat after the race - I saw you finish, but didn't find you guys before we had to leave

Gotta love you, Ovetta! Everyone else finished completely zoned out and we could barely get most of them to stop so we could cut off their chip, but you crossed that line and as soon as your legs stopped, your mouth started! LOL! You were definitely the best finisher! Great race... Your swim just kicked ass and that PB will be waiting for you next race! You're fitter and faster than last year and you're gonna kick some ass! Go O!
