View Member's Race Log
Loveland, CO

Sunny
Total Time = 4h 02m 43s
Overall Rank = 458/518
Age Group = F20-24
Age Group Rank = 11/12
Pre-race routine:

I lost most of my first iteration of this RR, so I'm a little less detailed on this one. That could be good or bad!

Woke up at 4:15. Made myself some oatmeal and ate a Clif Bar (because I only had half a serving of oatmeal left). Drove down to Loveland through some light sprinkling rain and thought that would be nice if it kept up just like that! Set up my transition at the end of a row. Talked to Joe a little, sunscreened up, pammed up and put on the wetsuit.
Event warmup:

Jumped in the lake and swam around for 200 yds or so. It wasn't really to warm up so much as just to get comfy in the water. Took a gel.
Swim
  • 33m 59s
  • 1500 meters
  • 02m 16s / 100 meters
Comments:

Started on the outside middle. The swim went great. I just got in a groove and stayed in it. I passed a lot of people, but looking at my rank, must have been passed by about the same # of people (I was in the 4th wave of 6). I decided during the swim to just swim my swim, bike my bike and run my run and enjoy the day.
What would you do differently?:

Not much. I was able to draft a few times. Never got scared or even uncomfortable. I think I like OW swimming better than pool these days...
Transition 1
  • 03m 27s
Comments:

Did an experiment. Sort of unwittingly, but whatever. I get blisters when running unless I slick anti-perspirant on my arches. So I put AP on my right foot in T1 and on my left in T2 to see when I need to put it on. The results shall be revealed later.
What would you do differently?:

I can't really remember the details well enough to know. Take notes, maybe?
Bike
  • 2h 00m 26s
  • 30 miles
  • 14.95 mile/hr
Comments:

This bike course was just awesome. I was able to ride hard (for me) and just felt great the whole time. The hills were perfect... hard enough to make you feel really triumphant when you reached the top, but didn't burn you out entirely. I was really surprised by how good and energetic I felt the whole time.
What would you do differently?:

Not much. The only thing I can think of is to have one bottle of Gatorade and one of water. The Gatorade just coated my mouth when I was breathing hard.
Transition 2
  • 01m 46s
Comments:

Jumped off my bike and was running into the transition, but there was a curb there and I didn't pick up the back end of my bike. Bike went flying (but didn't fall over). Really made me look like a spaz. :P I love it when I do shit like that in front of lots of people....
What would you do differently?:

Not do that. Other than the curb thing, everything went fine.
Run
  • 1h 23m 4s
  • 6.2 miles
  • 13m 24s  min/mile
Comments:

The run SUCKED. Really it was gawdawful. My goal was not to walk on the run. Ha ha ha. I'm actually amazed that my pace was that good. It was hot. My right foot blistered (AP on in t2 works, but not t1). My back where I had hurt it was spazzing out. Felt like an electrical shocks in my right butt cheek with every stride. Not fun.

Then when I thought I was pretty close to the end. A girl who was volunteering said "Just half a mile left." Then about 2 tenths of a mile later another volunteer said "Half a mile left." Whatever. I kept running for about another half mile and some guy says. "Only half a mile!" Which of course, pissed me off. I whined "Thats what the last 2 people said" He said "Yeah, but I'm actually right." I said "Well you shouldn't be!" And kept running. Not so pleasant at this point in the race. After that, almost anyone who cheered for me heard "Don't say half a mile." They laughed, but I was dead serious.
What would you do differently?:

Not get injured and train correctly. I plan to change my training around to focus primarily on running. If that doesn't work, I'm switching to Aquabikes.
Post race
Warm down:

Stretched, drank water, whined to Eric and Cathy and Erik about how much that run sucked. Ate. A lot.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Being a weenie runner.

Event comments:

I thought this was a great, very well put together race. Except for the "half mile" volunteers, all the volunteers were awesome. They cheered and did their jobs well! The food afterwards was awesome. Sooooooo yummy. There was this hot guy talking to me and once I started eating, the food was so good that I didn't care. I talked to him with my mouth full, answered questions with hand signals. I was all about the food, though it would have been nice to flirt with the hot guy (Eric had already left). I don't know what they put in that food, but I could have died right then.

THere was a total of about 2500 ft of climbing on the course. All of the elevation was lost on steep, screamin downhills (which is fun, but meant that it felt like you spent all your time going uphill).

LOL that is so funny....Everyone was yelling 1/4 mile left at me for what seemed like 10 miles at the end of St Anthonys...I wanted to shoot them too....The last .2 of a 10K at the end of an oly is defniately the hardest...Hope you ahd a good time and glad you enjoyed the bike...Greatr race.  Keep it up

As another weenie runner, congrats you did good. Olympic distance runs are so much harder than sprints. Great race report, wish we could have seen the long version.

Hey, Olympian, nice race!  Your RR is tooo funny.  But it sounds like you had a great time, both during the race and with the peeps.  Congrats!

OK....I'll bite.  Did you have blisters on the right or the left?  Did you smell up one shoe or both?  We've got more data that's not been reported, methinks...

Nice race Kim! I was there too - my wife was a spectator at T2 and saw many MANY people have the same problem with that darned curb - saw several slow speed spills! Good race nonethless!

I too had a tough time on the run...it was my first Oly and I just wasn't prepared to do the 10K after all of that. I ran the first 3.5miles or so, then ran/walked after that. Tough distance to do. Good job!

Great job Kim!! Was this your first OLY??? Electric shocks in your butt? Make sure that you don't have a torn glute or anything crazy like that - sheesh. Serious Hoss Chickery going on there.

Great job, Kim!
I was there yesterday too, gorgeous bike ride, wasn't it?
I feel the same way about swimming as you do about running!
As far as the blistards go - try putting excessive amounts lotion on your feet the night before and putting on socks over it. I had bad blistards in my first marathon, but then i started using this method and i never had any problems.
Congratulations again!
