Swim
Comments: The swim felt really good. I sighted about the best that I ever have, I stayed relaxed and just swam at an easy pace. I drafted a little bit passed a couple of people and got out of the water a couple of minutes faster than I anticipated. I swam about as straight as I ever have and stayed close to the buoys. My feet felt sort of weird going up the steps from the water and walking the rest of the way to the transition area. When I went to put my socks on, I noticed a bunch of little cuts on my feet that look suspiciously like zebra mussel slashes :) What would you do differently?: Maybe not wear the wetsuit. It started to get a little warm about halfway through. Transition 1
Comments: I took my time to get everything right and not get myself worked up. This was the first race where I ran out in bare feet and had my shoes on the bike. All that practice over the winter really worked out well because it just felt natural. About 100 yards from transition, I was up to speed and slid right in to my shoes. Bike
Comments: Pretty much a flat course, the last few miles to the turn-around were a gradual slope uphill (very slight, but I'm sensitive to that sort of thing because of my size) and was looking forward to really ripping it up on the way back. Well, there was some wind and my speed was the same. I just kept my heart rate where I wanted it and really had fun. Even though the flat course was fast for me, I think I like the hilly/rolling courses better because I don't HAVE to make myself hurt. Today was the first time during a race where I had to force myself to really push it and I could have pushed more, but didn't want to do too much and blow it for the run... I was a little concerned about my friend's wife because she was apprehensive about the swim, but when I saw her on the bike course with a big wide grin, I knew she was doing well and having a blast! There were lots of people sitting on their front lawns and porches cheering everybody on. Very cool that a race has that much local support from the town. What would you do differently?: Not much other than push it a little bit harder. There's always next time. Transition 2
Comments: I finally have the "swing leg" thing down too. My thighs are now small enough that I can bring my right leg in front of my left leg and it makes the "jump off the bike and run" thing much more fluid. Took my time getting into my running shoes. What would you do differently?: Nothing. Run
Comments: Had to walk about 15 yards at the top of each "hill" but other than that it felt really well. Somewhere between T1, the bike, T2 and the start of the run, I managed to get a big splinter in my right toe, but I didn't know that at the time... I just thought it was one of the cuts I picked up in the canal. It didn't hurt too much, but it did make the run a little uncomfortable. Overall I felt really good on the run, but having the course marked in kilometers really threw me. Usually, by the time I see the number 3, I'm on the last little push. Today I had to run a bit, see a number 4, run a little bit more... Not bad, but it just seemed weird. What would you do differently?: Nothing. This was my best tri 5k so far. Post race
Warm down: Meander around a little bit and wait for my friend Leanne to finish her race. She totally kicked butt today. She had a great run and beat me by a few minutes (finished a couple minutes after me, but started 2 swim waves after me). She did very well for her first tri. She might be hooked too. What limited your ability to perform faster: Nothing really, that's what I can do, so that's what I can do, right? Event comments: One of the best races I've been to. These crazy Canadians know how to put on an event! Tonnes of volunteers and lots of police support at all of the major intersections on the bike course. Very well run race - they had 2 triathlons and 2 duathlons all going on at the same time and kept everything well organised. After more than 2 decades, I guess they have down. The usual. Myoplex shake, carb gel and a Clif Bar (the clif bar travels better than bananas the way I pack). Filled gel and drink bottles and head to the race venue.
Jogged about a mile to loosen up the legs and then swam for a few minutes before race start
