Total Time = 1h 49m 58s
Overall Rank = 118/124
Age Group = Clyde Under 40
Age Group Rank = 5/5
Pre-race routine:

The usual. Myoplex shake, carb gel and a Clif Bar (the clif bar travels better than bananas the way I pack). Filled gel and drink bottles and head to the race venue.
Event warmup:

Jogged about a mile to loosen up the legs and then swam for a few minutes before race start
Swim
  • 20m 53s
  • 820 yards
  • 02m 33s / 100 yards
Comments:

The swim felt really good. I sighted about the best that I ever have, I stayed relaxed and just swam at an easy pace. I drafted a little bit passed a couple of people and got out of the water a couple of minutes faster than I anticipated. I swam about as straight as I ever have and stayed close to the buoys. My feet felt sort of weird going up the steps from the water and walking the rest of the way to the transition area. When I went to put my socks on, I noticed a bunch of little cuts on my feet that look suspiciously like zebra mussel slashes :)
What would you do differently?:

Maybe not wear the wetsuit. It started to get a little warm about halfway through.
Transition 1
  • 03m 11s
Comments:

I took my time to get everything right and not get myself worked up. This was the first race where I ran out in bare feet and had my shoes on the bike. All that practice over the winter really worked out well because it just felt natural. About 100 yards from transition, I was up to speed and slid right in to my shoes.
Bike
  • 41m 55s
  • 12.4 miles
  • 17.75 mile/hr
Comments:

Pretty much a flat course, the last few miles to the turn-around were a gradual slope uphill (very slight, but I'm sensitive to that sort of thing because of my size) and was looking forward to really ripping it up on the way back. Well, there was some wind and my speed was the same. I just kept my heart rate where I wanted it and really had fun. Even though the flat course was fast for me, I think I like the hilly/rolling courses better because I don't HAVE to make myself hurt. Today was the first time during a race where I had to force myself to really push it and I could have pushed more, but didn't want to do too much and blow it for the run... I was a little concerned about my friend's wife because she was apprehensive about the swim, but when I saw her on the bike course with a big wide grin, I knew she was doing well and having a blast! There were lots of people sitting on their front lawns and porches cheering everybody on. Very cool that a race has that much local support from the town.
What would you do differently?:

Not much other than push it a little bit harder. There's always next time.
Transition 2
  • 01m 13s
Comments:

I finally have the "swing leg" thing down too. My thighs are now small enough that I can bring my right leg in front of my left leg and it makes the "jump off the bike and run" thing much more fluid. Took my time getting into my running shoes.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Run
  • 42m 48s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 13m 49s  min/mile
Comments:

Had to walk about 15 yards at the top of each "hill" but other than that it felt really well. Somewhere between T1, the bike, T2 and the start of the run, I managed to get a big splinter in my right toe, but I didn't know that at the time... I just thought it was one of the cuts I picked up in the canal. It didn't hurt too much, but it did make the run a little uncomfortable. Overall I felt really good on the run, but having the course marked in kilometers really threw me. Usually, by the time I see the number 3, I'm on the last little push. Today I had to run a bit, see a number 4, run a little bit more... Not bad, but it just seemed weird.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. This was my best tri 5k so far.
Post race
Warm down:

Meander around a little bit and wait for my friend Leanne to finish her race. She totally kicked butt today. She had a great run and beat me by a few minutes (finished a couple minutes after me, but started 2 swim waves after me). She did very well for her first tri. She might be hooked too.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Nothing really, that's what I can do, so that's what I can do, right?

Event comments:

One of the best races I've been to. These crazy Canadians know how to put on an event! Tonnes of volunteers and lots of police support at all of the major intersections on the bike course. Very well run race - they had 2 triathlons and 2 duathlons all going on at the same time and kept everything well organised. After more than 2 decades, I guess they have down.

Good job!

I don't know if you've really noticed (cause sometimes we don't) but I remember when you put your first race report on here.   I have to tell you, I really see a difference in your speed.  You have gotten a LOT faster.  Your dedication is paying off!

Frank You Rock!!!

Awesome job and look how good you did at swimming...sighting well, going fast, going straight and near the bouys! Drat on those nasty Canadian Zebra Mussels!!

Your bike time was fabulous...you were smoking....all that time you have put in the saddle (sadly some for the bones) is really paying off.

Cool about your fastest 5K speed...you are getting faster!!

Sounds like a fun Tri...glad you shared it with a friend....who knows you may be doing a lot of Tris with your new Tri covert!

Good day, eh? (little homage to the Mckenzie brothers there).

Seriously, looks like it was a great day, even if you did have to swim 27 hectares in 45 deciseconds or some crap like that...

CONGRATS on your Tri PR, Frank!

As the others have said, you are really showing fantastic improvement over your first Tri. That is AWESOME buddy!

And... what's with this slipping the shoes on while riding and throwing your leg to transition to the run??? You gotta' tell me how to do that stuff!!!

Keep up the good work my friend!

Thanks for all the nice comments everyone. I went into this one feeling way underprepared with everything else that has been going on, so I just showed up to do it and have fun - you know, no pressure. Maybe I should approach all of my races like that...

Great race, Frank. Looks like you had a great time, eh? Even though you didn't feel 100% ready for this race, all of that work during the winter and spring gave you a good base to draw from.
