Or is it just me? I've only been on these forums for a month or so, and one of the things I liked so much about it was everyone was so civil towards one another. Even when people disagreed the discourse was always pleasant. So unlike any other internet forum I've ever seen. With the anonymity of the internet, people tend to be a lot "tougher" and flat out mean than they would ever be in person.
But I've noticed over the past couple days a lot of attack threads, ridiculing people for one thing or another. The thread about the runners going the wrong way generated a lot of nasty responses, then the one today bout "not being a real cyclist" if you want to go to a spin class.  I never noticed that before...or maybe it's just me.

Havent really noticed it. But yes, I agree this site is much better than "the other" tri site when it comes to friendliness.

I agree. It has gotten a little heated lately. Maybe everyone is a little testy from the winter blues.

Just become more self absorbed and you won't notice or care what other people are doing or saying

It's the off-season.  People get a little trigger happy in the off-season.

Also, people calling them like they see them isn't a bad thing in my opinion.  Have to take the nuggets of good information and throw away the bad....it's the nature of a forum.  Having people tell you what you want to hear all the time isn't productive.

Sod off!

Oh, 20 week training plans for June races have also just started and there's the can't go outside and have to do long trainer rides in a lot of cases to deal with as well.

Shifting from off season to ramping up.

Please don't take this as an attack, since I'm not just blindly agreeing...

I'm not sure that comments in two threads are a "large increase"?  Considering how many threads are started every day that are informative, friendly, helpful...

IMO, one statment was said in ONE of the threads that may have been out of line, and people responded.  I'm not sure who you consider the attacker, and the attackee?  The original post or the responses?

And since you called out yesterday's thread.  And I was part of it.  I guess I'm not sure where there was any attacking?  At least not on my part.  In fact, I wondered what people's thought process and never called anyone names or made it personal (unlike what was done to ME in that thread)...

Basically, if you percieve an increase of "attack" responses...  It could be due to off season cabin fever.  People DO get grumpier this time of year.

But honestly?  I have been here for YEARS, and these two incidents are pretty minor, IMO.  There have been MUCH worse instances.  In many cases, they get pulled.  If these two threads are even around, the mods must not think much of them either.

Sorry if a couple threads are ruining your BT experience.  It really is a great site.  When you get this many personalities in one place?  With MANY of them new people who don't understand the dynamics of forums or BT?  There can be butting of heads.

Again.  It's an internet forum.  Please don't take it too heart THAT much.  There will always be squabling.  There is in families, and they are MUCH closer than forum strangers.

I have noticed a couple of posters being a bit harsh. They were summarily smacked down by the rank and file. Well done BT!

Often times helps to look at the stats of the "mean" poster.

i.e. "If you were a real cyclists you wouldn't be in a spin class" registered 10 days ago.

Personally I prefer to survey the scene before I jump in with my input, others like to jump in and let loose. My experience around here has been that those who let loose with unwarranted negative opinions are soon set straight by the regulars and all goes back to normal.

I think the site does a pretty good job of discouraging negative attitude. Most comments that cross the line get feedback to tone it down. There are just too many positive people around here to let things migrate too far in that direction.

To the OP: I don't know if it's any odder around here than usual, but yep, sometimes it gets cabin feverish in the winter. It's still a lovely family and far nicer than anywhere else.

Dang, how come I never get any bribes?  I openly admit that I will take any BT bribes, feeling a bit left out.  May have to lash out at someone.  Okay I suck and don't deserve the bike I have! Do I get bribes now?

OP: it comes and goes.  I am getting much better about not reacting to post that tend to heat people up.  Reading ST helps build those skills.  Its all good in the long run.  Smile

I fear I may be one of the offenders.  I come from that other place, and though I try to remain civil, it is tough to break almost 2000 posts worth of ingrained uncivilized responses.

Couple observations about BT that might explain:

1. This is a great, lively, friendly, civil forum with good advice. Love the atmosphere here.
2. There is also an inordinate amount of incorrect and downright bad advice. Some of it straying as far as being the exact opposite of what someone should be doing.

Just sayin...

My response to the spin class thread (not being a real cyclist) was meant in jest. Thus the red-italics (meant as sarcasm in this community).

I've been here a long time.

I see a trend. Often someone joins BT and jumps in and starts posting without spending much time observing how this place works. Perhaps they are part of another forum that runs differently. When jumping in without being aware, often folks can be a bit pushy, argumentative and just plain not BT like.

Sometimes those type of  folks disappear, sometimes they get the vibe here and change their argumentative ways. Some folks just always need to have the last word and will defend their thoughts to the end.

Triathlon tends to attract a lot of type A people and this probably has a lot to do with way some behave.

I'm not calling anyone out but in last 6 months I can think of 5-6 people I would classify that behave this way. And most have stopped posting and moved on.

Yep, it's just you. The mods do a great job weeding out the trolls and people who are truly offensive. "You're not a real cyclist if you spin" is no big deal. I just snicker and move on.

Actuall this would be a pretty boring place if we just agreed with each other all the time.
