Overall Rank = 67/243
Age Group = 50-54
Age Group Rank = 8/19
Pre-race routine:

Woke a little before the alram at 4:25. Ate breakfast and did my business. Drove to the site which took just under an hour. Drank a diet pepsi. Took 2 tylenol 30 minutes before the race and ate a banana. Drank another 1/2 a diet Pepsi.

My packing for this race left a lot to be desired! I just through stuff in the front seat of the truck so it took me a long time to get things right in transition. I left a trail of goggles, butt cream, body glide etc. between my truck and transition. Fortunately is did not make me anxious and I did not lose anything.
Event warmup:

Rode 20 minutes out and back for 5.73 miles total. Ejected my water bottle going over railroad tracks and broke the top. SO no water on the ride. Swam 125 yards (5 lengths) in the pool. Did not get to run.
Swim
  • 04m 13s
  • 250 yards
  • 01m 41s / 100 yards
Comments:

Caught two people during the swim. Could have breathed better. Took to long to pass the first guy thereby losing time. Had a weird foot cramp right at the start but just swam through it.
What would you do differently?:

Find my rhythm sooner and pass quicker.
Transition 1
  • 01m 2s
Bike
  • 37m 45s
  • 14 miles
  • 22.25 mile/hr
Comments:

Had a @#$%^(*&^ of a time gettign my cleats in the pedals. Worst in a long time. Despite that when I look at my computer at 3 miles I was well over 20 mph. Felt really good and stayed aero for most of the ride. Passed 19 - 20 people all throughout the ride. Yelled encouragement to all the riders I passed. Occasional glances at my computer showed me I was regularly below 3 minutes/mile and I felt GREAT! I was not overdoing it.

I saw a guy at about the 6 mile mark and set my sites on catching him which I did at mile 12. He had an Mdot tat on his left calf and I do not think he was expecting to be passed. It was very motivating.

This was the best I have ever put together a bike split in a triathlon. Canoot wait to see what I can do when I reach my desired race wight in October!
What would you do differently?:

Get into my pedals quicker.
Transition 2
  • 01m 18s
Comments:

Not sure whay this was so slow. It felt fine. Maybe It took a while to get my feet in my running shoes. (Maybe I shouldn't wait for the ice cream man!)
What would you do differently?:

Get shoes on quicker.
Run
  • 28m 8s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 09m 05s  min/mile
Comments:

It was humid by the time I was running. I walked all the aide stations for water. In retrospect I should not have done that as it cost me at least ten spots overall and one in my AG. Miles one and two went ok. Mr. Mdot passed me early as did 4 others along the way, including the 3rd place woman, and she had the best running form.

I was thankful for the shade on about half the course, but the last mile was tough. I sprinted the last .1 miles and my garmin said I finished at 10 mph! (not for very long though!)
What would you do differently?:

Lose more weight and build up my mileage. I am still behind in this discipline due to coming off my achillies bursitis, but all it will take is more running and more intervals. It is frustrating to be giving up SO much time on the run!
Post race
Warm down:

Ate and drank and changed to dry clothes. Hung out with Linda and Wes and watched the awards.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Weight and lack of running miles due to injury.

Event comments:

I love this race! Will definitely do it again next year!

Terrific race, Doug!  It's wonderful to hear the excitement in your race report, what a fantastic bike split!  BUT, no walking aid stations on a 5k, please.

Great job Doug and smokin' bike split!  The run will come.

Another great race, Doug! You are seriously tough. I see you pulled the trigger on Washington Half. Truthfully, you're out of my league, but when I get back to training I'm going to have to hit it hard to try to give you a run for your money.
