Pre-race routine:

Renee (renee) Janice (Foolprof) and I were staying at my parents place close to the race. I drove over Saturday am to open the palce up and get the air/water turned on. Did my swim and a short bike around the development. Went out shopping then waited for the girls. When they got there we went over to the race site to get registered/packet pickup. Then off to the mall for manicures. Mine was ruined less than 24 later but more about that later. Off to dinner.

Race morning I got to pump up my tires. Flatted on the rear. Could I EVER have a flat in the front? Yep later on but anyway. New bike. I'm struggling to get the bloody tire off in the dark with the @*&#@&$%^$ Sprinklers going off. (so much for the manicure) Told the girls to put their bikes in the car and them we took off. Got to the race site and I just took the bike to a bike vendor to get the stupid thing fixed. I lost the end to the skwer at some point so I needed one of those as well. UGH. Got it fixed and got transition set up.
Event warmup:

Well my HR was in about zone 5 by the time I got the bike fixed. We walked around a bit and swamm a little. I was really not hungry and had a banana and a couple bites of a bagel at the house. had an e-gel about an hour before the start.

I was having major GI issues all morning and had to keep running to the bathroom. We went as a group and Renee goes to leave and lets out this blood curdling scream....I'm thinking there is a guy with a mask and a knife...nope a frog. Poor Frog.

TIMES ARE AGE GROUP AND OVERALL FEMALES. They didn't put overalls on the site and I'm too lazy to manually go thru the lot and figure it out.
Swim
  • 11m 12s
  • 440 yards
  • 02m 33s / 100 yards
Comments:

First of all this course was DEFINATELY LONG. When a women with a gold medal in swimming does 440 in 6:24 its long. Overall the times were long for a 440 swim. Probably more like 600 yards.

I felt GREAT on the swim. I drafted off Renee. Later she was like "You were the Bitch on my feet" I got a little off course on the last leg but not too bad. I had a cramp in my left quad at the start but it it worked itself out quickly.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing it was a solid swim. Would be nice to know exactly how long the course really was.
Transition 1
  • 03m 11s
Comments:

1/6 Age group 14/69 Overall. It was a LONG walk up a paved hill into transition. I am surprized it was this fast. I didn't want to tear up my feet on the pavement or get my knee more sore or start the bike winded. I had decided to bike barefoot so no washing/drying of feet was required. Quick once I got to the transition area.
What would you do differently?:

Learn to run and not be injured. My knee was sore and running barefoot on pavement was OUT. The transtion itself was fine.
Bike
  • 47m 44s
  • 15.28 miles
  • 19.21 mile/hr
Comments:

FIRST IN AGE GROUP!!! This was my big goal for the race. I was 4/69 for females and 39/197 for the entire field :) There were some hills. Nothing mountainous but challenging for us Floirda people without being insurmountable. I lost my bike chain twice :( I'm annoyed because this is a brand new bike and the chain should not be falling off. I probably lost a minute mucking about with that. Then the top connector on my aerobottle fell out but I had already stopped to fix the chain and I wasn't stopping to pick it up. While fixing the chain 3 girls passed me. I managed to pass 2 of them right back. One of them stay about 100 yards in front of me, I passed her once but then she passed me again. I ended up having a better bike time than her anyway because my swim was faster :)
What would you do differently?:

Have a bike that the chain doesn't fall off of. Find somewhere to train hills. Overall I'm happy with the bike segment
Transition 2
  • 01m 38s
Comments:

I sat down and washed my feet, dried them and put socks/shoes/hat on.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. I need dry socks for the run.
Run
  • 43m 52s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 14m 07s  min/mile
Comments:

UGLY. I started running and my knee was sore right away. The bigger problem was I just could not BREATHE. It was crazy. I felt like someone was holding apillow over my face. I was all wheezy and miserable. #1 AG girl passed me at about 1 mile #2 at 1.5 miles #3 about 2.5 miles. I tried to catch #3 but there was nothing I could do about #1 and 2. I just could not breathe. I probably walked about 90% of the run. There were a lot of very nice young kids in the race. 3 stopped to walk with me. I kept telling them PLEASE go run don't let me hold you up!! It was really hot but it was the breathing issue. I really have not had that happen before and it was really scary.
What would you do differently?:

BREATHE!!!! I have an appointment to see if I have exercise induced asthma. Have healthy lower extremities
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around and tried to BREATHE....drank some water and waited for Janice and Renee. We cleaned up Transition and went to get some food. I had a hamburger which was a HUGE mistake. I may never eat another hamburger ever again. Found out they were giving awards 5 deep so Janice and I took home hardware.

When we started walking back to the car I started feeling REALLY bad. As in about as bad as when I had a kidney stone. We get in the car and Janice tells me my front tire is flat. UGH..honestly I felt so rotten she could have told my my bike imploded and I wouldn't care. I'm driving back trying desparity to not throw up. sweat is pouring off of me WHEW it was no good. FINALLY we get home so I can run to the bathroom. Then I just laid on the floor for a while. Went kind of like, take a shower lay down, pack a bag lay down, pack another bag lay down....Couple hours later I felt somewhat better and drove home where I promptly laid down.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

1-Long swim course
2-Chain falling off bike
3-GI blues
4-Could not BREATHE.....posible exercise induced asthma
5-Heat

Event comments:

This was the first year for this race. It was VERY well done. they had about 300 participants and 90 volunteers!!! Everyone was really nice. I thought the course was great and the bike was perfect blend of hills and flats. My parents live in this community most of the year. I know they were trying to get a good community response and they did. Lots of the houses on the bike course had signs saying "Welcome triathletes from the ___family."

I felt so bad after the race. If I had felt that bad after my first race I would never have done another one. Luckily It was not my first race :)

Congrats on the hardware.  Sorry for your feeling bad.  It's a pain to have to drive while wanting to throuw up.  Had that experience.  Not fun.

Funny how many people complained about the swim distance in races for this weekend.  Seemed like they're all longer than expected.

Hope you have a more relaxing day today.

Dang Sue- sorry so much stuff went wrong! That's really scary that you were having breathing problems. Let us know what the doc says! On the other hand, go you for kicking major BUTT on the bike. You are a speed demon on the bike anyways though. That's funny about you drafting off Renee the whole time!

Somewhat of a ditto on my race.  I only had absent mindedness and heat to battle though.....Wow!  If you can survive the things you DID, you can do anything!  Honest.

Great mental tuffness!  You worked harder for that hardware than just about any other, I bet!  Good job.

Sue...you hit your goal...first off the bike...awesome swim (obviously wrong distance...but longer is better for you)...super fast bike which would be even faster without chain dropping twice.

Bummer that you had breathing problems on the run. Glad you are seeing your family doc. to get that resolved. One plus is that it is better to find it out today then Nov. 4th!

Congrats on a fun race with friends and hardware to boot!

I can just see the morning scramble in the sprinklers.  LOL!  Gratz on the HUGE bike!  All that biking when the hip was mending seems to have given you a monster base and some nice speed.  GRATZ!!!!

Wow, girl that WAS a great bike!!!!  Sorry it took so long to read this, I will do better next week when I'm not sleep deprived!  LOL

Congrats though, what an awesome bike split!  I guess Roo2 really worked for ya.  Speaking of chains, funny that mine fell off on the same day eh?  Weird!!!  But still, what a great achievement!
