Sunny
Total Time = 00m
Overall Rank = /

Age Group Rank = 0/
Event warmup:

Powerbar, hair braiding by Janice, talking with friends. Small swim with Denise and Lisa. Mike getting me halfway into my wetsuit, Rick shaking me like a pillowcase into it the rest of the way.
Swim
  • 37m 33s
  • 1640 yards
  • 02m 17s / 100 yards
Comments:

Tried to be more aggressive with this swim, and ended up swallowing half the bay. I did significantly better on the swim, PR'd by 10 minutes. Only threw up once!!
What would you do differently?:

Not swallow water?
Transition 1
  • 03m 43s
Comments:

Had REALLY bad stomach cramps coming out of the water. Took my time in T1 to try to resolve that.
Bike
  • 1h 21m
  • 24.85 miles
  • 18.41 mile/hr
Comments:

Had fun on the bike. I PR'd this too, and other than the stomach issues felt great. I attempted about 4 oz of E fuel, which I promptly threw up, so I gave up on trying to drink.
Transition 2
  • 05m 1s
Comments:

I felt like complete crap at this point. I attempted a crank gel, and didn't even get it completely swallowed before it came back up. I sat on the ground and tried to make my stomach stop cramping.
Run
  • 1h 00m
  • 4 miles
  • 15m  min/mile
Comments:

I walked. Saw Mike (marmadaddy), Shaun, Mike, Lisa, Sue, Janice, Kathy, Christine and then Denise. Tried to "whoop whoop" each one!!

I got stopped in T2 by medics, then again at mile 2, and again at mile 3 and 4. I tried to sip water and/or gatorade at each stop, but threw it right back up. I was plodding along, with more and more cramping in my stomach. Somewhere after the 4 mile water stop I passed out for a few minutes. Woke up with the same medics who were riding behind me on their bicycles calling an ambulance. I begged them to let me finish, they agreed if I could get up and walk, they would let me. I tried, couldn't, tried to crawl, and couldn't, so they lifted me into the ambulance. Rob sweetly stopped to make sure I was ok, and offered to stay with me!! Thanks Rob!! :)
What would you do differently?:

I wish I knew!!
Post race
Warm down:

Enjoyed 4 bags of fluids at the hospital. Dr. McDreamy was gorgeous and took great care of me, despite my stinky, salty self!! He lectured me on the damage I am doing to my kidneys by losing 14 lbs in one race. I was relieved when Mike finally got the message (thanks Sue and Rick) to come get me. Thank goodness I took my phone on the run!!!!

This was my first DNF, and I didn't take it well. I'm pissed at myself, I'm pissed at my body. I'm not sure what to do differently, but I'm gonna try really hard to figure it out!!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

My freaky belly.

Event comments:

This is a great race, well organized and well supported by the community. I won't race it again next year, but look forward to jockstrapping and socializing!!

As you know, I  have been down that DNF road before too.  It is not fun, but you do recover from it and it can be the fuel for the fire that you need for future training and races!  Let it pass (this race) and get 'em at the next one.

Truth is that you missed me and just got sick at the fact that I wasn't going to be there to see you finish!    it's ok, you can admit it!

Passing out during a race is never a good thing.  At least you had a cute doctor to help you.  How come you won't do this race next year?  I plan on doing it, so you can jockstrap and take some good pictures.

Hope you're feeling better today...

I wonder if swallowing all that salt water just starts off a yuck stomach for you? You need to get up here and swim outta that ocean!!  And it won't be hot as blazes!

I credit you with two miles of post warm-down running on a stomach full of beer and pizza.  AND...let's do the glass-half-full thing....at least you didn't pass out during the swim?!

Hope you get it figured out.  And take care of those friggin wheels.

So sorry about the DNF.  They happen sometimes but they always suck.

Here's my OPINION.  Pushing hard on the swim was good, but NOT if you were swallowing that much seawater.  That stuff will kill you off.  Probably the root cause of your cramping and other stomach issues through the rest of the race.  Better to slow it down and avoid the swallowing of the ocean.

If it happens again, you might try just drinking straight water afterwards to cut the salt in the seawater. That stuff is WAY to concentrated.

I feel for you on stomach issues though - it's something that I'm always having to pay attention to as well.

Awww ... girl?

Thank you thank you thank you for being my 'swim angel' on the beach.  I lost it.  But you helped me get it back.  I think you passed me at the second turn (after starting 10 min behind me.

On the run, I was so zoned out and then this beautiful face comes into view and I get a high five!  I'm so sorry you went down.  Maybe you transferred so much strength to me that I wrecked it for you!

Thank you!

Wendi,

I already said it in your log, but I'm sorry as hell you had trouble.  Gotta be related to swallowing salt water.  I took one inadvertent gulp and that was bad enough.  For whatever reason, I always end up swallowing air and needing to burp about half way through these longer swims..so I've taught myself to burp underwater.  Then I rate 'em for duration and sound.

Maybe you could try a lake swim; come up and do the HOT with us.   Nice fresh water and you can even see, unlike Clermont.

It's good to see that you weren't so out of it that you couldn't appreciate a good-looking doctor.  I'm surprised you lost so much fluid...I thought you took in enough during the swim for the whole day!!

Glad you're feeling better!

The hot doctor is WAY key to recovery, IMHO.

I'm sorry you had a bad day, but I'm happy that you kept trying to stick it out.  I've said it before, the only way to DNF is to get carted off by an ambulance.

Oh my God.  I saw you on the ground "bargaining" with the medics and I had no idea it was you....I remember thinking that is exactly what i would be doing just to get to the finish line.  I would not have made it that far - you have an incredible spirit.

I am sorry to hear you had stomach troubles.

It was really great to see you and you really helped both Claudie and I calm the nerves on our prerace walk to the swim start.  It is always really awesome to see you and Mike!

 We will see you soon

Hey...the good side - you still had enough energy to curse out the medics.  You rock!

Sorry about the yucky run.  Passing out kind of sucks.  14 lbs - holy crap.

As always - we have a great time around you and Mike.  We loved watching Ben and Beka knock out Meek and Mighty!  Thanks for all the great times in Fl.  Its what keeps us coming back....the sandwiches are pretty good too.  (thanks Mikey!  *grin*
