1 | Subject: Sunday? ...Why Sunday?! Greetings. I've only recently done my first triathlon, and I've fallen in love the sport. I'm trying desperately to hit as many events as I can this season, but it seems as though most of them within driving distance are all on Sunday... which presents a problem for me. I've got a great deal of responsibility within my church, which naturally occupies my time on Sunday mornings. The race I was able to do earlier this month was held on a Saturday, about 180 miles outside of town, so my friend and I were able to drive out Friday night and get back home by Saturday afternoon. So my question is essentially, "why Sunday?" I understand that this topic likely won't concern some (or most) folks, but it's frustrating for me, considering the circumstances. I really want to embrace this sport, and do my best to excel in it... but not at the expense of honoring God by setting apart Sunday mornings for Him. Thanks in advance... -- Johnny |

Champion 5522 Frisco, TX | Subject: RE: Sunday? ...Why Sunday?! I've thought about this as well, the only answer I can come up with that makes logical sense is the comparative lack of traffic on Sunday as compared to Saturday... ETA: Doesn't make me happy to miss church on Sunday, but at least my church (Methodist) has a Saturday evening option... Edited by ashort33 2010-06-29 3:02 PM |

Champion 14571 the alamo city, Texas | Subject: RE: Sunday? ...Why Sunday?! A local RD has stated that it's when there is the least amount of traffic on the roads, but her races all start at 7 am and I'm not sure why it would be any different on a Saturday morning. I go out of my way to find Saturday events, for the same reason. I'm looking forward to hearing what veteran racers and RDs may say. |

Elite 4235 Spring, TX | Subject: RE: Sunday? ...Why Sunday?! Well, there are only two days available, so there's a 50/50 chance of holding these on Sundays. I'm sure if it were held on Saturdays plenty of people would have complaints for that too. Can't please everybody... |

Expert 2852 Pfafftown, NC | Subject: RE: Sunday? ...Why Sunday?! Most of my races, this year, will be Sunday events. I've wondered "why not Saturday", also. The best reason I can figure is, it gives people who might work on their feet, during their normal work week, a chance to get off them for a day - before the event. Just a guess, though. While I understand your feelings towards Church, I also think honoring your maker - by showing off what he's given you is a GREAT testimony! My feelings are, he'd understand! I'm an avid bowhunter. The late Fred Bear once said "When a hunter is in a treestand with high moral values and with proper ethics, that hunter is 20' closer to God". I have my best conversations with him, in his back yard. No reason you can't. Good luck. |

Extreme Veteran 615 Dallas, TX | Subject: RE: Sunday? ...Why Sunday?! I've always figured it was so that athletes can take care of packet pickup or expo or drive the course on Saturday and be more prepared for Sunday. Also, Saturday is not a work day for most...so easier to rest up for the big event. |

Champion 10019 , Minnesota | Subject: RE: Sunday? ...Why Sunday?! If I had to guess, I'd say races are on the day easiest for the RD to arrange. I bet parks are booked for events on Saturday, it's hard to get police officers, etc. I haven't done a survey, but in an area like the Twin Cities we have a LOT of races and they are on both days. I prefer Saturday simply so that I have the weekend ahead still without having to worry about a race. Then again, a "far" races for me is 40 miles, so it's easier here generally speaking. |

Also, most people who have every been an RD will tell you that you are more likely to get volunteers on a Saturday to be ready for the Sunday race than you would be able to get volunteers on Friday afternoon/evening for the setup. Thanks in advance... -- Johnny I figured long ago that God gave me athletic skills/body for a reason, so when I train/compete/race I am honoring Him. Thus, my church is on the roads, in the gym, anywhere that I am improving my athletic capability. I tell people that ask, that I worship at the church muscular. There are those that get what I mean, and others that just believe I am a misguided heathen. I'm not a big fan of organized religion anymore. John |

I wish there were more options for you but for now just do your best to find those Saturday races! This is what I was thinking - also along the lines of easier to get permits from the local municipality to close roads because there will be less traffic disruptions. The couple of tri race series in our area generally have events both on Saturday and Sunday ... some distances one day and others the next. Lucky us. |
