We've lost a friend.

I would say the best thing we can do, in John's memory, is to make certain that you let your family know you want to be an organ donor.  THAT is the best way to honor the memory of a man who touched and inspired so many.

Good point. I'd also recommend registering with Donate Life.   They direct you to the registry in your state and it will help reduce the uncertainty and hassle for your family if the time comes:

I've known John through BT for a number of years; there wasn't a time when he didn't have a good word, a thoughtful outlook, some encouragement for others. Remarkable man.

My state allows you to officially register as an organ donor through the DMV when you renew your driver's license.  Maybe others have something similar?

I know very little else about this.  But at least in Minnesota, the company that handles organ donation at the hospital is called Life Source. (I know this because I have a friend who works at a major hospital in trauma areas.)   When I used Donate Life to register, it sent me TO Life Source.  So, I am assuming that has put my information directly in the hands of the people who will be talking to my family members.   I also have the donor box checked on my driver's license and have discussed this with my husband.

P.S. I think I did this initially upon the recommendation of John, on his blog or in a post here on BT possibly. 

Whenever the subject of my death comes up (as in "what do you want to have done?"), my mantra has been for many years: Part me out, burn the rest.

Part of me will live on, the rest of me will give John a big high-five at the finish line.

Ditto - he was always so positive, upbeat and an amazing advocate.  So sad to hear this.  RIP John.  My thoughts and prayers are with him and his family.

I am better off having known him. If not for some young woman's family honoring her wishes, I would never have known him.
