Subject: Riding with headphones... yay or nay?
I wrote a post on my blog about having a great playlist for biking and I got a comment from someone begging me not to encourage people to ride with headphones on.

I ride on the trail and I keep it at a reasonable volume (so I can hear other riders, walkers, etc) and I try to be as alert as possible, but is it still considered bad etiquette?

You don't need to justify why you do something.  If it is your own choice and it is legal, then go for it.

You will get all sorts of reactions ranging from "Yeah, it's fine." all the way to "You're gonna burn in hell after you run over that child and kill him because you can't hear!  You are evil!"

Your going to get a lot of comments about this.  Riding with headphones I don't see as a bad idea.  I've done it before but I used to ride on roads where I could go on a 40-60 mile ride and get passed by maybe a dozen cars.  I was on a pretty deserted area to say the least and the speed limits on these roads were around 35 mph so it wasn't like the cars were zooming by you.

Being on a path I have to say is similar but also might be more danergous.  Considering all the other people and items around you other then JUST a car.

I'd say thumbs down unless you do it on a less trafficed area.

Bad etiquette? I wouldn't say so. If you're on a path, are aware of your surroundings and are courteous towards others on the path I say go for it.

I might do the same on a path. On the road, never,  because I'd consider the risk of being dangerously distracted to be too high.
Also, in NY state it's illegal to ride a bike on the road with a non-medical listening device in more than one ear.

x2, no headphones -- I like to listen to everything around me.  But to each his own.

If we are voting... nay.
Some people can be aware of their surroundings with headphones in. I would rather not risk it, and wouldn't encourage or recommend anyone to either.

I do alot of riding on both roads and bike trails. On roads, never but on trails I see no issue w/ it as I ride w/ my ipod, stay on the right side of the trail, courteous of other riders (pass on the left and let them know) and give preference to walkers.

Though as most of the riding I do is on road, I would have to vote nay.

This is about as fair an answer as you can get. Everyone is going to have a different comfort level and different risk tolerance.

Personally, I've ridden a lot with music, haven't yet had someone explain to me what sound I should be hearing and what resulting action I would take should I hear it. I understand there are those who may zone out to the music, and that's dangerous anytime you're moving. Then there are others that zone out without music.

I am a nay as well. For exactly what Bear said.  I tend to zone out and I need to keep my wits about me. Plus I live in a city of 3 million people so there's always lots of traffic even on the paths so it just seems ill-advised.   I could see some places that are pretty deserted where it wouldn't be an issue at all.

Most of my rides are sans earphones.

A few of them I've worn them. Regardless I always/only wear one (when I use them). Just my preference.

I've come to learn the rhythm of the tire on the asphalt, so typically don't use them.

I ride AND run with headphones on ALL the time when I'm solo.  Don't notice any lack of situational awareness.   When I'm with someone(s) else of organized ride/race the NO.  WAY TOO MUCH going on(at least on the ride portion) to have them on.

I cannot wear earbuds as they don't fit in my ears. When I run I do sometime use outside the ear headphones. Never when riding. I have enough issues with the wind going through my helmet.

BTW: Where I grew up we had a term for people who wore headphones and NO helmet...organ donors.Laughing

I liken it to knocking back a few, then driving.  Maybe you feel you're still aware of your surroundings, being cautious and in control, yet it's still not the best idea.  Will some of us do it anyway?  Probably.  Could it lead to an accident?  Probably.  Of course, no one will impound your ride and throw you in the can for headphones on a bike Wink

my thought is if it's legal and you feel safe with them, then okay.  If not, then no.  I listen to music when running and riding when I am alone and i am familiar with the traffic patterns etc.  I don't use them if I am riding with others, or if I am in the mountains or on a narrow trail with a lot of switchbacks.  just use good judgement.

Maybe you should listen to music more and "zone out" less?

it's a bad idea to ride w/ headphones on. think it may even been illegal depending on the state.

Personally I never wear headphones or listen to music when biking or running.  I prefer the natural sounds of my biking or running.

However, if you feel that you are being safe while listening to your headphones I don't see a problem with it.  It sounds like you have given it enough thought to ensure you are aware of others and haven't had any safety issues arise.

I stay stick with what you are doing!

Although tempted, especially on longer rides, I never wear them seeing that all my riding is done in the city and I need all my senses focused on not getting killed!

I ride with them any time I ride solo. I keep the volume low enough that I could hear a raised voice and can pay attention to my breathing. I definitely can hear cars coming. I wish I couldn't hear the cars sometimes, since the hillbillies where I ride like to do "close drivebys" which if you hear them coming are twice as scary.

I stop at lights, slow way down at stop signs, but do listen to music. 1.75 of out three aint bad.

Ride smart...headphones aren't going to make a difference if you ride stupid anyway.

The only time I ride with headphones is when I'm riding to work, and that's only because I'm so familiar with traffic patterns and the ride is SO flat and on a trail that's incredibly dull. Even then I only use one ear bud.

All other rides, solo or in a group, are done without.
