STORY: I did my first triathlon in 2008, in the midst of a divorce.  I had developed some bad habits and something inside me clicked and made me take control of my life for the first time in a very long time.  I injured my knee (torn meniscus) at the end of 2008 and fell back into my lazy ways so no races until 2011.  During that one, I had a severe case of plantar fasciitis so it was a case of just getting it done.  After that, I had surgery to have a bunion removed.

In 2013, I had signed up for another sprint and was completely dedicated to my training during the first 3 weeks of January.  Then we got news that my mom had lung cancer.  I was traveling to and from Texas (I live in the Chicago burbs) and the stress just got to be too much so I decided to drop out.  Along with my mom's cancer diagnosis, we realized that she also has advanced dementia.  It was something that started while she was in the hospital and has progressed from there.  Also, last March, my youngest stepdaughter was killed in a car accident.  Needless to say, I'm hoping for a better year.

FAMILY STATUS: I'm 41, married for almost 4 years (anniversary in March) to a man I married after knowing for only 2 1/2 months.  I have a 29 year old stepdaughter and two grandchildren, ages 7 and 3.  We also have 3 fur babies (border collie/lab, golden retriever/corgi --or something to that effect, and an orange tabby cat).

CURRENT TRAINING: Getting back off the couch again this year.  Just moved to a new town and have a new gym membership to boot.  My goal is to get active again and keep the injuries at bay.

THIS YEAR'S RACES/EVENTS: Esprit de She - 6/8 but would like to find some more to keep me motivated

2013 RACES/EVENTS:

BODY COMPOSITION: I lost about 25 lbs in 2012 and actually managed to keep it off in 2013 which is really the first time that's happened in a long time.  I am still quite fluffy and need to lose about 80 lbs.  My goal is to lose 6-8 lbs a month by training and following a keto diet.

So I know I'm late to the Pod Party, but welcome  Sorry you've had some rough years. Good job on keeping those pounds off!

Esprit de She was my first open water attempt last year. I did the Super Sprint and really enjoyed it. Will probably do at least their sprint this year.

Originally posted by awalden22 NAME: awalden22 / Ashley STORY: I am 25 years old and I live in the Indianapolis, IN area and have been here all my life. I graduated college (Purdue University) summer of 2012 and currently work full time as a Medical Laboratory Scientist. My husband is actually the one who got me interested in triathlon. Last spring he came up with this "crazy" idea for him to compete in a sprint distance triathlon. I got to thinking about it and decided that I wanted to train with him, so I signed up too. We trained all summer together and the event was held in September. Somewhere towards the end of training I lost focus and wasn't doing what I needed to be in order to be ready for the event. So I went with him to the event that I had also signed up for (and paid for!), but just watched from the sidelines because I was too afraid that I wouldn't be able to finish. I know this year is going to be different. I am really motivated to complete several sprint distance triathlons this year and really get into this sport. I enjoy training and look forward to going to the gym. I am currently trying to overcome the mental block/anxiety/fear of failure that held me back last year. I am positive having this group to communicate with on this thread will definitely help me out of my mental rut! FAMILY STATUS: I am married to my wonderful husband of only about 2 1/2 months at this point (we just got married this past October) and we have two dogs. A black lab mix named Sophie, whom we adopted at a shelter and a cock-a-poo (cocker spaniel/poodle mix) named Ellie who we have raised since a puppy. Two completely different types of dogs, but they sure do keep us entertained! CURRENT TRAINING: Like I mentioned in my story above, I did train for about 2 months last summer but then kind of fell off the wagon during the fall and beginning of winter. I blame a lot of it on my wedding - time consuming! But I have no excuses now. I just started training for my very first event taking place in April last week. I am currently working out 5 days a week for about 1 - 1.5 hours each day. Swimming 2X per week and alternating biking and running between once a week and 2x a week. More biking overall though because I am not as good at that. I am also incorporating in some basic strength training 3x a week. I am following a training plan that was published in triathlete magazine. THIS YEAR'S RACES/EVENTS: 1. BSU Spring Sprint Tri - April 19th 2. Carmel Swim Club Sprint Tri - April 27th 3. Muncie June Sprint Tri - June 7th 4. Columbus Challenge Sprint Tri - August 9th 5. Purdue Half Marathon - October 18th 2013 RACES/EVENTS: Sadly, I didn't complete any triathlon races in 2013 even though I signed up for one. I did complete the Indianapolis 500 mini-marathon in May 2013. BODY COMPOSITION: Ever since I left high school I have struggled with my weight. I went from being very active in high school to doing practically nothing in college and of course gained the "freshman fifteen" and then some. I have not succeeded in losing that weight yet. I used to be one of those that would try any diet plan and exercise plan because I was so desperate to lose the weight even if it wasn't healthy for me. My husband and I recently started transitioning to a No Sugar No Grains lifestyle (NSNG). So far it is going very well and we are seeing some great results. I have finally realized that it's not all about the weight loss but more about the quality of life and just being overall more healthy and if you are doing things right, the weight will come off over time. So that is the path I am on now hoping that I can shed about 30 pounds. I don't have the ideal racer's body. I am 6 feet tall and have wide hips, just a bigger built person. But I do know that as long as I keep eating right and exercising regularly that I will eventually will have a more ideal body for competing in events. I am looking forward to getting to know everyone!

Good job getting started   And nice list of races to keep you motivated!  Hopefully Aussie Jo can find some time to pop in on the NSNG topic.

Originally posted by Lanne I am a Nervous Newbie, nervous about what? how to read training plans, that I might ask silly questions that sort of silly stuff I would really like some ideas on meals during race week if anyone has any plans or suggestions NAME: Lana STORY:I have always been into sport mostly team sports basketball, hockey, netball (netball fanatic) sometimes play 4-5 games a week but injuries are starting to catch me up there. At 35 I did my first triathlon since school, to support a friend whose husband had bought her an entry for Christmas! Cant say she was impressed with the gift she in the end did not compete I have gone on to become a little bit enthusiastic. I enjoy exercise but do need motivation to do it, as long as I am part of a team or have paid money for something I will commit, mostly I like exercising outside I have tried gym memberships but have failed (mostly from not knowing how to use the equipment and gym rooms can be rather daunting with all that muscle building going on.) So basically I like to do triathlons to keep fit and motivated, I have done 5 tri's with my 6th the Saturday. FAMILY STATUS: Married with 2 children 5 & 6, 2 dogs Labradors, 2 chickens, 4 fish and 1 crazy crab CURRENT TRAINING: Before Christmas I was training 6 days a week and have just picked that up again after new year. I train once a week with a PT group hoping to up that to 2 times in Feb. I try to follow the beginner sprint plan as best I can but sometimes there is just not enough hours in the day THIS YEAR'S RACES/EVENTS: Telstra Tri Series 2013 RACES/EVENTS: Telstra Tri Series Left Bank All Bar None Tir Womens Sun Smart Tri Triathlon Pink BODY COMPOSITION: 5ft 11in 86 kg (have lost 5 kg since oct but would love to lose some more, seem to have plateaued)

Ok, I felt ignorant, so I had to look up netball. Where's the backboard???   I hear you on using races to stay motivated/fit. It keeps things interesting.

Thanks guys, I'm ok but that might change when I have to ring Phil and tell him, he is in Tulsa in Oklahoma at the moment. I have been debating for the last hour whether to tell him or leave it until he gets home next week. What would you do?

I am really sorry to hear this. My condolences

On one hand, I would want to spare my spouse the worry, especially since there is nothing he can do.
One the other, if i were the one travelling, I would want to know. While I would appreciate my spouse being considerate, I would still want to know.

Oh no, so sorry to hear that! Will be praying for you.

It depends on why he is in Tulsa? Work or fun? If he is there for work, I personally would probably tell him if I didn't think it was going to distract him too much (depending on what type of work). But if he is there for something more on the fun scale, I would wait.

I decided to tell Phil, I thought if it was me I would want to know. He was really upset and now I feel really bad that I have ruined his day too.

I am so glad that I have more than 1 dog. It would have been heart breaking to come home to silence. As it is I am sitting here listening to my other dogs snore and it is amazingly comforting. Every snore is like an enveloping hug. This pretty much sums it up for me.

Adam said, "Lord, when I was in the garden, you walked with me everyday. Now I do not see you anymore. I am lonesome here & it is difficult for me to remember how much you love me."

And God said, "No problem! I will create a companion for you that will be with you forever and who will be a reflection of my love for you, so that you will love me even when you cannot see me. Regardless of how selfish or childish or unlovable you may be, this new companion will accept you as you are & will love you as I do, in spite of yourself."

And God created a new animal to be a companion for Adam. And it was a good animal. And God was pleased. And the new animal was pleased to be with Adam & he wagged his tail.

And Adam said, "Lord, I have already named all the animals in the Kingdom & I cannot think of a name for this new animal."

And God said, "No problem! Because I have created this new animal to be a reflection of my love for you, his name will be a reflection of my own name, and you will call him DOG."

And Dog lived with Adam & was a companion to him & loved him. And Adam was comforted. And God was pleased. And Dog was content & wagged his tail.

After a while, it came to pass that Adam's guardian angel came to the Lord & said, "Lord, Adam has become filled with pride. He struts & preens like a peacock & he believes he is worthy of adoration. Dog has indeed taught him that he is loved, but perhaps too well."

And the Lord said, "No problem! I will create for him a companion who will be with him forever & who will see him as he is. The companion will remind him of his limitations, so he will know that he is not always worthy of adoration."

And God created CAT to be a companion to Adam. And Cat would not obey Adam. And when Adam gazed into Cat's eyes, he was reminded that he was not the supreme being.

And Adam learned humility.

And God was pleased.

And Adam was greatly improved.

And Dog was happy.

And the Cat didn't give a hoot one way or the other.

Heh. I just FB posted a researcher's findings on cats -- indeed.

Mastiff {MELON PRESS} ... I still think it was the least worst of two awful choices to tell Phil. There's no right or wrong in this situation--no way to make it easier. I'm so sorry you guys have to go through this by yourself, far apart. Heaps of love to you.

I was looking back through the mastiff pics--I'll send the rest to you.

Big, big {{{{hugs}}}}.  So very sorry to hear about your Lizzie Lou, and I feel you made a wise choice in letting Phil know.  Personally I'd be pretty upset with my husband if I was away and something happened to one of the animals and he didn't tell me.

I made it to the pool today!  The allure of warm dog snuggles (read: The Enabler(s)) didn't keep it's grasp on me today and I weathered through freezing fog (yeah that was fun) to go to Masters.  I even, at times, 'got' the EVF feeling.  During the one-armed drill both JLC and I were not moving our arms quite right and Elliot explained when/how the catch should start.  I could definitely feel it when I did it right but now it's a matter of retraining the muscle memory to do the new action.  Guess that means I'd better get back to the pool on Friday as long as my ART guru is happy with my hammy tonight.

So very sorry to hear about your loss - but I'm glad you told Phil.  I think it was the best choice to make under the circumstances, and if I were in his position, I would have wanted to know now rather than when I got home.

As for the last sentence... I'm learning this in a big, bad way right now.  Cats = cute furry jerks.

Good job on getting there, it is really hard when it is dark and yucky out!

Good on you for getting up and going!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now that I am taking the swim clinic my swim sessions are so much more positive and productive!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh, BTW I made the wasabi meatballs that were mentioned a few pages ago (or was it in the last thread?). They were a hit. I'm not happy with the wasabi I bought though, which is unfortunate because it was pricey.
