Wow, my spring and summer plans took an interesting turn.

It's now going to look something like this:

Feb: Begin marathon specific training, keep a fair amount of uphill (ski or on foot) travel with some weight bearing (in a backpack)

June: Run marathon early (recover and switch to long easy and slow running and hiking) Ski Mountaineer Mt. Baker end of June

July: Run my first Ultra! In Iceland!

August - Sept: switch to short/fast/steep running for a series of short uphill oriented mountain races.

A new iclandic airline just started flying to the us via Iceland from my local airport. They are offering flights to Iceland for as low as 35 pound (50 dollars ish). It's on my to do list

*Darren starts to train for an ultra...*

That's one of the things that I miss about living in the UK - the CHEAP flights to other countries & how close together they were, so you could get off of work Friday afternoon, catch a late flight & then spend the weekend in Paris, Madrid, Barcelona, Riga, wherever... and get back Sunday night slightly hung over (or a LOT hung over) and ready to face Monday.

Happy Monday Manatees! Hope everyone had a good one! Winter seems to have finally arrived to all of the states, including Florida! Of course, our winter is a bit different from what Mary ran through this weekend. Man, that is some seriously cold weather, good job getting out there!

In other news, I had a really fun race. For those with time on their hands, here's the race report!

Really nice (and long) race report, I really enjoyed reading it, thank you for sharing. I must admit on my last (third) HM I did the same thing as Freeman, I saw a girl who was running with a slightly higher pace then mine, so I started following here. She did all the weaving and accelerating past the other contestants, so I didn't have to use my brain, I just could blindly follow her for about 1.5 kms. I got a couple of nasty looks from her, when she decided to slow down and let me pass I sprinted off. Following her was really helpful, but I will try to avoid something like this the next time. If I could I would like to apologies from that girl, but I can't. So, can I apologies in the name of Freeman from you?

Hahaha!  Pacing off someone else is not a problem, it's how close you are to them that can be annoying to the person off whom you're pacing.  Give them a little elbow room.  Especially in a trail race where they have to see and read the trail conditions.  If you get too close you can cause one or both of you to trip.

Yeah, using each other for motivation and pacing is part of racing. For many it's a major part of it. Getting in too close where you become a hazard is a problem.

Everyday I am reminded of things here.

  • Don't follow too closely in a trail race and
  • Don't eat caterpillar fungus.

Only one of these really applies to me

Gooooooood morning pod!!!

So those of you on strava might have seen that my wife talked me into going to her Insanity class on Monday. HUGE MISTAKE!! I am so sore WTF?!?!

I was all excited about a trip out to the Hill Country with my cycling team for winter training camp this weekend, but now I'm just hoping my legs recover before the first ride on Friday.

My wife sure is getting a kick out of it though.

Not sure how much you follow distance running, but at one time there was a group of elite female Chinese runners under a coach named Ma called "Ma's Army" who dominated several world championships. He swore by caterpillar fungus. One of my running buddies gave me some as a joke (this was later, when I was working in Beijing and not in very good shape). Out of curiosity and to help my students learn about the scientific method, I conducted an n=1 study on myself, with 5K time trials before/after 2 weeks of that stuff. Conclusions:

1. It doesn't work as a performance enhancing drug/supplement, at least not for me.
2. Even if it did, you wouldn't want to eat it. Looks disgusting and tastes worse. Very not worth it. For legal doping, stick with beets or, better yet, caffeine!

I think it was used as a negative training tool. "If you don't run faster, you have to eat this sludge. lol

Strava premium has a 20 minute FitStar video that I did with my wife over the weekend that involves plyometric workouts like jump lunges, single legged squats, etc.

I was more sore from that than I've been from any Sufferfest workout I've done in the past year.

I decided that after the Tour of Sufferlandria that I'm going to work more on my general fitness.  I may even hit some weights *GASP*

Yeah this was lots of jump squats, burpees, stuff like that. It never crossed my mind that I'd get sore from it. I ran 58 miles the previous week and was basically never sore.

I haven't had the time to hit the weights much lately, but for sure once the IM is over I'll be getting back after it.

I had no idea strava had things like that, I'll have to check it out.

Good news! I did a track workout with a new group last night and really enjoyed it!

It is much closer to home (shaves 1.5 hour travel time) and is a little more casual. We did a nice little 4 x 400, 2 x 800, 4 x 400 (faster) and it was  a great intro to speed again.

Bad news, I didn't have any dry clothes to change into after and got a little hypothermia. I know, you would think someone who runs in all this snow and weather would never have that happen! I was standing there waiting for the bus, totally drenched and in shorts, shaking violently. A man even stopped to ask if I needed a blanket! I probably should have taken him up on that. The bus came and it was much better on the bus but then I had a short jog from the bus stop to home and it really hit me. I got really disoriented and couldn't stop shaking.

I'm ok now though, lesson learned!

So cool that you found a group that you think you can work with, and that they are closer to home. Glad you are okay after the hypothermia. It's amazing how much difference warm clothes can make! I've had a couple of runs that I didn't change into dry clothes quickly enough and then it takes so long to warm up!

Read with interest all the posts about moving stuff around.  I don't have a coach so use plans that i find here or on TP.  The days are never right though, so I change stuff around all the time.  I just try to keep stuff in the same order as much as I can because I figure there is a reason it is like that.  Not always possible, so next is just make sure I am not doing a long or intense run right next to an intense bike.

So after being told about it by my physio after she has been working on my knee/pelvis issues for awhile, I decided I would see a naturopath and have some prolotherapy injections.  Anyone have any experience?

Glad to hear you found another group that you enjoy.  1.5 hours less of travel time is a huge benefit.  Sorry to hear about the shivers.

Anytime I do anything resembling a squat, even with light weight, my legs are ruined for days. DOMS are the worst.

I need to know if this is a thing. I received an email from USAT congratulating me and saying I qualified for the USAT Age Group National Championships this Summer, for the Olympic Distance race. Is this really a thing or is it just an ad that everyone gets?

Haha. Yes, it's a real thing. Congrats! It's been in Wisconsin for the last couple years. Not sure where they're having it this year.

It's in Omaha. Not sure I want to go to Nebraska (Hope I didn't offend anyone), It would definitely be a tough sell to my wife. It does fall into my master plan of keep doing this until I age out the competition. haha The plan just requires a lot of patience.

Omaha?!?! We lived there for six years. It was before I got in to tri but I can't imagine a venue that would support AG nationals! It'd be an experience but Omaha?!?!

Find a mentor. Make a list of at least three people that you could approach for help, list your specific needs and then be courageous enough to begin asking.
