Well I'm more scared of that last downhill than I am of the climbing!! Afraid I might die on the descents!!!
okay, that's legit. Just make sure you have new brake pads, because I don't think they will be new when you are done.
I'd be checking the whole brake system. Downhills on a pro level course can be pretty serious!

Also wondering if you get like a 6 hr lead in order to be not run over by them!

Wow Sean that looks amazing!
The ascents would be enough to stop me considering it, but I'm with you in that the downhills would scare me to death. I have seen the speed that some of the guys get up to on the small hills around here. I was driving behind a guy on a bike the other day, I was doing 80kph (50 miles) which was the speed limit and he was pulling away from me.

I hope all you northern hemisphere manatees enjoyed your longest day of the year because as of today we are stealing back our sunlight. I am sorry for you but really all I have to say is WOOOOOOO HOOOOOOOO cause I am over the dark and the cold, although in reality neither will be gone for another 2 or 3 months, but there is a light at the end of the tunnel

I didn't realize that was today.  These long days are exhausting.  It seems like as long as there is daylight we are busy doing something especially if the sun is shining.  I miss my couch.

Yep--having a hard time going to sleep here when it is still light out. It just seems wrong. (My parents go to bed and get up early so I kind of have to go along with that or get awakened with not enough sleep.) Plus MY couch is on the other side of the Pacific! Plus we are planning a road trip to Canada in July (and IM 70.3 Calgary), where it will be light even later. Don't think I could live in Alaska--I would sleep all winter and never get any during the summer.

So you are saying that AlaskaMan is out as a Manatee Meetup event?  ;-)

I'm in the "that downhill looks scary as all giddyup" camp! Still, should be quite the experience.

I'm glad I'm not the only one! On the one hand, I hate driving to work and then back in the dark, losing all my sunlight sitting at my desk. But there really is so much pressure in the summer to "use it or lose it."

Doubly true here in the Pacific Northwest--not only are the days super-long (even more so for Pops up in Bellingham area), but for most of the region it is the only season when we're reasonably sure that outdoor activities won't be dampened by rain. At least until my folks got older and slowed down a bit. kind of a nonstop frenzy of biking, running, house and yard "projects", and hiking. On really nice days, it is pretty normal for me (and probably much of the population if they aren't at work) to come inside only to sleep.

I think sometimes I have the best of both worlds. I get summer here, but get to spend winters mostly in the tropics. You can say what you want about the heat in SE Asia, but I NEVER have to go to work in the dark and return in the dark. (I guess if I happen to work really late, or do a swim after school, maybe the latter occasionally, but I always get at least half of my morning run, and my commute, in the daylight. It's easier to plan life and training when the daylight is pretty predictable. (I think the day length varies by at most an hour, year-round. If I lived in Singapore it would be, within a minute or two, exactly the same.)

When I was in high school and played basketball as much as possible, I would mark the Summer Solstice on my calendar and make sure I was off that day.  I made it a point to play as much that day as possible.

Because of that tradition, I keep up with it, but I don't celebrate it like I used to.

Living in Florida, I don't get the super long days others get during the summer, but during winter I still have light when I leave for work and come home after. When I interned in Seattle one fall, it was quite weird having it get dark around 4:30.  There are some things I really don't like about Florida -I'm talking about you humidity, but I love all the daylight we have!

I have been 45 mph on my road bike and Tri bike on a few decents around here. I don't think I can handle going much more than that. 45 already feels very unstable.

My thoughts exactly!

mine too!!

Also mine! The first half doesn't look too bad, but the last 40 or so miles look torturous.

I look at that and my thoughts went from OMG - BRAKES, to OUUUUCH, to holy SH*TBALLS - BRAKES!!! Back to OUUUUUUUUUUUCH

Disc brakes would be good here. Last year I got my new mountain bike which came with disc's and frankly I was astounded. As a result I also put discs on my other mountain bike, sold my rim braked road bike and bought a new CX bike with discs. I wont go back. Its not that discs brake harder but the modulation and ability to get exactly the amount of braking you need is second to none. In the rain it is even more profound as the brakes work instantaneously.

I think I did pretty well on my summer solstice day. I was up early so biked down to the lake at sunrise for a swim, I ran at lunch and I finished the day at sunset at the lake again on my mountain bike.

So I've been pretty quiet for a while. Mainly too busy with vacation, work and family to post much. Work is finally starting to slow down a bit so hopefully I can keep up a bit better.

Since our neighborhood Master Swim program never came together this year we unofficially started our own "program". Basically we said whoever wants to swim at 5am, just show up and we all just do our own thing, while have at least a bit of group support/peer pressure to actually do something. We officially started last week and I've managed to go twice last week. (Was out of town two days) and so far made it every morning this week (technically Tuesday and Thursdays weren't mentioned), but figured pool opens at 5 either way, might as well swim by myself if need to be. Attendance has been lacking so far (2-3) people max, but we are trying to get the word out to more people and it is quite early in the morning (yeah yeah I know Sean, not dedicated enough blah blah )

I have a Sprint coming up Sunday. This was my very first Tri last year and I hope I will improve on my times, though it's supposed to be hot and humid.

Running is still my biggest challenge. Not picking up as much speed as I'd like to. My neurologist says nerves take a long time to fully recover, maybe I'm just too impatient as everything "feels" like it should be back to normal and I should be faster. Oh well we will see over time.

Other struggle I have right now is weight. I'd like to shed 10-20 pounds, but scale is not moving at all. I know my diet sucks (Way too much candy and stuff at work), but even when upping volume and/or intensity it doesn't seem to make a difference right now. Never really had that problem in the past so not quite sure how to tackle that one.

Glad you are back at it and getting your swimming in despite others not showing up.

With the weight loss you pretty much hit the nail on the head about what you have to do - sort your diet. I'm sure that you do know this, maybe you just don't want to (and maybe I'm talking to myself here as much as you ). The sad fact is that as we get older exercise alone doesn't cut it anymore, we can't eat like we did as twenty year olds without consequences. Drop the "candy and stuff" and the scales will move, maybe not as quickly as they have before but they will move.

Glad you're getting the workouts in and doing well.
I'm with Stacey with regard to weight loss. It isn't fun, it isn't sexy, but you gotta eat less if you want the scale to move. During the last few months I had convinced myself that my increasing volume and "clean" diet were going to do the trick. It didn't. I'm back to counting calories and bowing to the altar that is MyFitnessPal, and the weight comes off.
Good luck and have fun at your race this weekend!

The running aspect of an Ironman triathlon is a marathon. Most people take on a marathon as a single event and the training for this uses up a lot of their time. Here are some tips for the run.

Find a mentor. Make a list of at least three people that you could approach for help, list your specific needs and then be courageous enough to begin asking.
