Laura, as others have said, no problem.  I was blown away when I ran a HM after doing all slow zone 2 training runs.  It works.

So to change the subject a bit- how many calories per hour is everyone consuming while on the bike?

Good question.  I think that i am currently taking in too much.  I take a Stinger Waffle every 45 minutes, which works out to just over 200 cal/hour.  This would be for a HIM or IM.  On my first HIM I used only liquid calories and I realized that I need to take in something solid or my tummy is not happy.  But now I am having bloating issues by the end of the bike/start of the run.  I am not sure if it a 'too many calories' issue or a 'too much solid' issue.   I think I will be trying more fluid calories, while keeping some solid and see how that works.  Of course, I don't have a problem in training, only racing, so won't know for sure until next year!!

Not sure how much help all that is to you.

Oly - 1-2 gels on bike, that's it for the race.
HIM - 200 cal/hr (bloks on the bike-works out to 2 bloks every 20 min, gels on the run)
IM - 300 cal/hr (bloks on the bike-works out to 3 bloks every 20 min, gels on the run)

I've been using EFS-LS on the bike.  I do 1/2 of the shot bottles in a bottle of water for about 200 calories/hour.  I also have 1 Clif Shot Block every 20 minutes for about 300 calories/hour.  This is for IM.  I was having bloat issues late in the bike and on the run when I was doing more solid calories and the EFS has helped with that.

oh good - I'm interested too.

I take in about 230/hour of infinit on the bike and similar on the run.

I was thinking about switching to shot bloks this year for the run. I need to pick some up for testing - but I would MUCH rather a blok than a gel.

Thanks, guys! I'm embarrassed to admit this, but I've probably only been taking in 150 calories/hour. I'm going to up the caloric intake this weekend on my long bike and see what happens. I've tried the Shot Bloks, but I don't like chewy candy so it's hard for me to use those. I have been using Bonk Breakers for the past few years, but all of the sudden I'm having problems with those - as in chewing and swallowing them. Last weekend I added Carbo Pro to my Gatorade and didn't notice a taste difference or stomach issues, so I'll add a bit more this weekend. I'm also going to try Picky Bars instead of the Bonk Breakers.

I've found on the bike the solid food works better for my digestive system, but on the run I prefer gels. I just don't eat enough on the bike and I think that's really affected me. Hopefully a combo of solid and added calories to my drink will work.

I do bloks on the bike but not on the run. I'd rather do bloks the whole time but I'm generally working harder on the run and I find it hard to chew/breath/swallow. Sucking down a gel is way easier.

Same here.  Bloks + running = walking.

Another tip on the gels. I like to have them in a pocket in my suit so they're up against my warm body. When they're warm the viscosity is much lower and goes down way easier without getting stuck in your mouth. If you don't have pockets like that just hold it in your hand for a half mile to a mile before eating.

In a HIM I typically eat a whole bar of Ritter Sport dark chocolate plus maybe one gu. That's about 700-750 calories, or maybe 250 an hour. I really don't like most gu and for me, the chocolate works. Without it, I would have trouble getting down enough calories in a race where the bike leg lasts two hours or more. I have tried and failed with lots of products including chews and liquid nutrition. What goes down and stays down on the bike is the chocolate. I do use gu on the bike for shorter races, though. I would typically take in just one on an Oly bike and one on the run, so I wouldn't get too sick of them by the end like I would for an international distance or HIM.

For a HIM run, usually two gus. I use a kind (PowerBar tangerine) that has electrolytes and caffeine in them, so they kind of serve the function of sports drink and free me from depending on those drinks offered on the course--I just take water at aid stations, plus carry a bottle or two of Nuun. (In Asian races, including IM brand ones, I have been served beverages including Red Bull and a drink called Number One that tastes like a cross between cough medicine and cherry Coolaid--nasty stuff. Even most Gatorade makes me nauseous as races tend to serve it too sweet/concentrated. So being self-sufficient is a form of self-defense!

Yeah that's a good point.

Last year I carried my pack and used infinit on my im run. I'd rather not carry it this year. I can get all the salt I need with gatorade and salt but the thought of five gels for calories makes me uncomfortable. I've never had problems before but I've never done More than three.

The running aspect of an Ironman triathlon is a marathon. Most people take on a marathon as a single event and the training for this uses up a lot of their time. Here are some tips for the run.

Find a mentor. Make a list of at least three people that you could approach for help, list your specific needs and then be courageous enough to begin asking.
