My favorite compression socks are my Injinji's that I use for recovery. They are like a post LR hug for my feet and calves. I rarely wear them while running unless it's for a theme (St.Pats) or I want the added warmth for cold runs.

None, I am a sleeve user. I have 2 pair, one from Pro Compression that I am not too thrilled with and the other from Adidas. I had one from McDavid, which DD1 gave me. I like them and the Adidas, simply because they breath well. The Pro Comps are thicker, which I stay away from. I generally wear them for the more high effort training runs and keep them on for a while afterwards. I think the reason I like the sleeves and not the socks has been stated previously, my feet are free, yet my calves are all held together.

Hello Manatee's, I just wanted to report I am back from vacation where I did no training except playing golf and Tennis. I got back on a spin bike this morning and will try and get a swim in today too. I have not really run much as it has been aggravating my back and I would like to stay off the DL. I will give it a try this weekend though. Hope all of the Racers, Trainers, and DLer's have a great weekend!!!

Steve: so glad to hear you're off the DL, and you continue to be in my thoughts.
Matt: ouch. just ouch. Please take care.

As for socks, I only drag out a pair when its snowy or super cold. I probably won't wear a pair again until Dec/Jan. Should I try compression socks? Why do I need to be compressed?

I've used two over the years.  CW-X sleeves that are great for racing tri's because you can wear them under a wetsuit.  They are a thinner material than others but provide enough support and are easier to get on and off.

I have a pair of CEP socks that I use for long training runs (especially if it is cooler out) and for longer running races.  They provide more support and thermal protection as they are a thicker material.  They can be a bugger to get off though and I'm always afraid I am going to get a cramp struggling with them.

Also, thanks for the warm welcome back.  You folks are truly amazing.

I am hopefully going to have an addition to the Manatees pet gallery soon.  We are going to foster for two weeks to make sure she is a good fit, but I don't foresee any problems.  Once we are sure I will post her pic and story

I had a run this morning where I am not sure I should believe my Garmin.  My Garmin said I was going at a faster pace than my heart rate suggested and how it felt to me.  I have one of those every now and again.  I suppose I can attribute it to a good nights sleep since today is a holiday and I slept in....of course, there is always the possibility that I am just getting more fit, but that would be the last thing I would jump to

Hello, my favorite Pod in the whole wide world.  Happy Friday, happy birthdays, GOOOOOOOOO RACERS, and heal up DLers!! Thanks for all the check-ins via inspires.  They help me feel connected with you even when I can't read the forum.

Quick update: my dad was put in the hospital last Saturday night because he was having suicidal thoughts.  They put him in a senior care unit instead of the adult behavioral (psych) unit, for which I'm really grateful.  He was released today.  There was a bit of a scare when they said he was having short-term memory problems. Cognitive testing ruled out any abnormalities so he "only" has depression and anxiety.  He's never been treated for either (those are for "weak people" - thanks, Dad) but he clearly has both.  Hopefully he'll keep taking the antidepressant they gave him in the hospital and follow up on some of the hospital's recommendations. No telling; we'll just have to see.

I had a fantastic race on 3/12 in Zion. It was quite appropriate that my first HM started in Virgin, UT.    Writing up a RR might take me awhile so here's a little summary.  Pre-race was a little rough.  Rain made the starting area a total mud pit so I had to scrape an extra pound off each foot before the start.  The rain stopped before the race started and the scenery was spectacular with mist and clouds shrouding the tops of the canyon walls. The sun came in and out too, which just added to the beauty.  I ran with my friend and at every mile we high fived and whooped. Aside from a few aches and pains, I felt great the whole way, powering up the hills that looked really intimidating when we drove them.  We averaged a little over 11:00/mile and our last mile was 10:11!!  At mile 7.5, there was a herd of cows facing the road and mooing at us.  I'm sure they were cheering us on.  At mile 12.5, I asked my friend if she wanted to leave it all out on the course and of course she said yes.  We took off and flew into the finish.  It was totally amazing!!  I finished 55/166 in my AG--top 3rd!!!  I felt great afterward too, enough so that the next day I was able to explore the park with DH.  Unfortunately, I lost a toenail because a bunch of fluid built up underneath it.  It then got infected so I'm now taking antibiotics and can't run because it's ouchy. Given that we just got over 19" of snow and will be getting another 3-6" tonight and tomorrow, I'm not really missing anything.

My eyes aren't any better.  Doing computer work is still hard.  Anything more than an hour and I have a headache and nausea for the rest of the day.  Same with driving, watching TV, etc.  As long as I stay in my house and away from a lot of visual stimulation, I'm fine.  NOT an option for the long-term!!! I finally got accepted into the state vocational rehabilitation program but am thoroughly unimpressed with the guy who is supposed to be helping me.  As long as they pay for vision therapy and any adaptive technology I need, I'll be happy.  We'll just have to see. 

I can ride though. I got the Punk fitted Monday and finally got my rear off the couch for a trainer ride.  I did a few too many single-leg drills and am paying for it today.  Still, it felt great to get back to training again. I'm going to a friend's house on Sunday for a trainer ride and a few episodes of "Outlander". Some hot Scottish azz always brightens up the day.

Again, thanks to those of you who have been checking in on me.  I'm so grateful for my Manatee friends. Yer the bestest!!! Have a good weekend, everybody!

Drive by, cause you all know that's how I post these days.

Overall improved tendinitis...as in not limping at least.  Starting to do things in PT instead of lying on the table for ice, ultrasound and soft tissue work.  I'm walking pretty much every day with an occasional twinge in the posterior part of the ankle. Right around the peroneal and Achilles tendons.  I can ride the trainer, but with the weather being so nice I want to ride outside and the hills aren't allowed right now....If I really wanted to I could swim, but anyone that knows me knows I really hate doing that....

Life is a little crazy.  Thing One was in an accident the other day, she's fine--her car is waiting to be fixed.  She needs it to finish her student teaching!!  At least it happened when the school she is at has spring break, she is home waiting for the mechanic to get the insurance go ahead on fixing it.  

Miss Thing has been sick all week and after being told by her professors of her major classes to not show up unless she's treated and 3 different clinic visits she FINALLY got some meds.

Confusing, but not uncommon advice.  Docs often will say to bear with something until you can't accomplish your "activities of daily living," and only then submit to surgery.  Mirrors the approach a couple other docs took to my shoulder over 20 years, until I could no longer lift a cup of coffee - and then I went under the knife.  Much better now, although I can't throw a split fingered fast ball anymore. 

The advice isn't always sound, but often is.  Sometimes (my shoulder), it's better to live with what you can if it won't lead to irreparable harm, as surgery has its own risks. An ortho preceptor once told me, "God does a better job on knees than I can, so I only cut when I absolutely have to." 

OTOH, if you have something that's just broken, surgery can be a real boon (my shoulder, but only once "broken" after a rough year of swimming, tennis, lifting and pitching coach-pitch for 2 of my kids teams - tore it up, but good, and for good).

Not sure what to think about my elbow, though.  Last 2 times on other elbow or lateral epicondyle of this one, a shot worked wonders and helped me rehab fully.  Feels like, if it's in immediate need of surgery, cut.  If not, try corticosteroids.  But what do I know.

Mary, so sorry for the scare with your dad and other health issues.  Same time, it's inspiring that there's so much positive in your post, too!  Way to finish that race STRONG.

I have no input on compression socks. Weird but true--I have never had my calves cramp. Ever. I think in one RR I mentioned them cramping but that was actually the FRONT of my leg, which isn't actually the calf but something else (anterior tibialis??) and turned out to be a bike cleat issue. When I did Hood to Coast with some former college teammates, we had a massage dude from the Nike elite team (one of us works for Nike--not me!) and he commented that he'd never seen anyone else whose calves failed to tighten up after more than 25 miles of hard, often hilly, running. The rest of me (especially glutes and hamstrings) was a mess, as it usually is after long/hard runs, but my calves were nice and loose. So I guess I am a physical freak, and not the target market for compression socks. (Happy to advise about compression SHORTS, though. I have a big collection of those!)

For women in need of good azz for trainer rides--check Youtube for footage of Kona 2015 by a German poster named Kanotist or something like that. The run portion features nearly 2 hours of non-stop coverage of the backside of Andreas Raelert! Just my personal opinion, but he and Pete Jacobs are just about the sexiest dudes in tri.

Ok, think the explanation helps to make more sense and come more into line with what I've seen. It also sounds like "may" need surgery, or that it's a possibility. If things are close enough to the right place, then they may regrow well on their own. The surgery isn't so much to fix things completely, but to put them in the right place (or at least better) to allow for that regrowing. The pieces of my collarbone were jumbled up and some separated enough that surgically setting them better made much more sense. Years back some soft tissue in there was partially torn, so the decision was to let it regrow without surgery. The surgery could be done at any time if it wasn't healing right. Fully torn and they would likely have gone right in. A knee problem years ago was on-going for several years and wasn't showing to get any better, so had them get in there and fix it.

Some other ladies at work are starting to get the idea now of the surgery setting things in place and it's the therapy afterward that really helps regrow and regenerate everything. In talking back then I tried explaining this to them, but not sure it fully sunk in at the time. With this more recent accident of mine, now they're seeing the difference as the surgery only put me in a sling for near 6 weeks. Currently I can do about anything I want with it and it's still getting stronger. Just avoiding true max level type lifts for a little longer though can do full body weight push-ups. They're both stuck with limps that I'm not sure will go away. Definitely not without specific work on it and unsure even then.

Spring is definitely here! Yesterday the insides of my elbows were green with pollen. Today I almost stepped on this guy while running on the greenway.

We're still safe from that up this way as Thursday's snowfall only melted yesterday.

Yipee! Daughter #3 works in a chocolate store and they just started selling sour cherries dipped in 70% Dark cocoa. there is no question that they will be the key to improved performance.

Not only is he a great athlete, he is a great mentor. I have been in his mentor group for the last two rounds and he inspires and encourages our entire group daily.

Find a mentor. Make a list of at least three people that you could approach for help, list your specific needs and then be courageous enough to begin asking.
