It's time for a minor confession. Michelle insisted I pack the coat for the ride. I wasn't going to disagree with her, because I knew she was right. She is a super sherpa, She gave classes to my brother and his wife this year. She might start the Sherpa training academy. haha. I told Michelle that Kevin and I saw UNTRAINED Sherpas in Chattanooga! |

I was thinking of the whole cancel reservation, find new hotel, make reservation, if you are flying - where are you flying into, etc. Plus now they have to find volunteers from scratch. Are they basically doing two two laps of the 70.3 or ??? |

Master 8248 Eugene, Oregon | Subject: RE: Manatees - 2018 Edition Now CLOSED It comes back. This time last year 100% of my running was in a pool. In February I had just graduated from run-walk and even by late that month I don't think I'd gotten over 30 minutes. Now I'm up to 3 hours with most of it around 8:30 pace. (Like that is actually going to happen in a real IM in the tropics after biking 112 miles.....NOT. But my coach is convinced this constitutes "IM race effort" for me. Based on heart rate or some such theoretical calculation.) In the actual race, I intend to run what I feel like running, whatever will keep me moving forward steadily and out of the med tent, and hope to do more running than walking. I'm a realist! |

Veteran 2441 Western Australia | Subject: RE: Manatees - 2018 Edition Now CLOSED Thanks for the well wishes everyone. Sorry I haven't been around much - October has been a hard month for us. One of our older dogs got sick at the start of the month and at first we thought it was something treatable (although with a hefty vet bill attached) but she wasn't getting better and after 3 days at the vet they discovered that she had tumours in her spleen. We were working through possible treatment options when one of the tumours ruptured and we had to let her go to sleep. I hate this a great deal but what I hate even more is watching how devestated Phil gets. We were just starting to breathe a little bit after that and Phil's nephew (one of the few family members that Phil gets along with) was admitted to the locked mental health ward and has been diagnosed with bipolar. This has reignited a massive family issue that normally sits just under the surface of the "let's pretend we are a loving caring family that all get along great" facade that Phil's family has. Normally Phil stays out of it and has very little to do with most of his family but in trying to support his nephew and his wife we have ended up right in the middle of things this time. The stress of the situation is making Phil physically unwell and all of the body aches and fatigue issues that he a few years ago have resurfaced. So with all of that going on running a marathon tomorrow in the wind and rain with very little training is actually going to be a bit of a relief. |

Master 8248 Eugene, Oregon | Subject: RE: Manatees - 2018 Edition Now CLOSED So sorry to hear this, Stacey. Sometimes, truly, racing and training become the easier parts of life, or at least the ones we feel like we have some control over. Thoughts and prayers for your family. My workout today was, basically, a half-ironman with a slightly longer swim and bike and slightly shorter run. I guess to work out pacing and nutrition (45 minute swim, 3 hour bike, 1:20 run, back to back). The time works out about the same as my PB, but minus the finisher's swag, cheering crowds, and aid stations. Shoulda just gone to New Orleans and raced! Always wanted to visit there. |

Thinking of you and Phil--hope the marathon gives you a bit of respite from worry. |
