Sunny
Total Time = 1h 03m 52s
Overall Rank = 3/424
Age Group = M30-34
Age Group Rank = 1/36
Pre-race routine:

Woke up feeling a bit dehydrated and hungover (wedding until midnight the night before) but Ally and I decided to do the race. Had a cliff bar, gatorade and peanut butter sandwhich and we drove the hour and a half south to the race.
Event warmup:

Took the bike out for a quick spin and then did a few laps in the lake - it was a bit cold in the water.
Swim
  • 10m 52s
  • 820 yards
  • 01m 19s / 100 yards
Comments:

Jumped out quickly to separate from the pack and then tried to keep everything long and smooth. About 200 meters in 4 of us came together and I was able to draft off someone the entire swim. Felt good coming out of the water.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing - did not push it too hard and still came out with the lead pack.
Transition 1
  • 01m 40s
Comments:

Once again setup forgot to turn on the timing mats for the first 30 or so of us so this is an estimate though it may have been my worst T1 in a long time. Hands = cold = zipper would not move.
What would you do differently?:

Usually I will swim in my wetsuit before my first race to make sure I get everything working ok - being this was a late sign up I did not do this and probably should have.
Bike
  • 30m 21s
  • 12 miles
  • 23.72 mile/hr
Comments:

I am hoping to see a big improvement in my bike this year as I spent much of the off-season concentrating on biking hard and I think it has paid off.

Came out of transition in second place with two other guys a little behind me and got up to speed quickly. About a mile out I passed the first place guy and started hammering it. Avg watts were above 300 and I was feeling pretty good.

About 4 or 5 miles in, the guy I had passed sling shotted me and got in front of me and then proceeded to slow down. Up the next hill I jumped around him, stayed left so he would have no draft and got away from him - this took about 400 watts. Did not see him the rest of the race.

About mile 7 or 8 I heard the sound of a disk coming up from behind me and this huge dude passes me. I let him pass me, stayed draft legal and sat there the next 4 or 5 miles. Watts during this time were down to about 270-280 (HR around 170) or so but I felt like I was going as fast as I was before and was happy to come into transition in 2nd place.

What would you do differently?:

Nothing - had so much fun on this course. :)
Transition 2
  • 01m
Comments:

Setup forgot to turn on the timing mats for this transition as well so this is an estimate.

Took a little extra time as I ran down the wrong exit and did not have my speed laces on my shoes.

What would you do differently?:

Last second race so I did not appropriately scout the course or have my speed laces on my racing flats yet.
Run
  • 20m 1s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 06m 26s  min/mile
Comments:

Started off the run and could see that I had lost a little time in transition on the 1st place guy but that he was big guy and I was going to catch him pretty quick.

Made up a bunch of time on him in the trail section of the run and was in first place by the time we came off the gravel. Unfortunately that did not last too long and I was passed by 2 guys in E trisuits including a younger kid that flew by me. Made it to the turn around, saw I had a pretty good gap to 4th but that 6 or 7 guys looked to be within a minute of me.

On the way back I started seeing everyone and slapping hands - saw Ally and Shelly and they were in 3rd and 4th overall for the woman at that point. 3558 was also moving quick and was pretty far up in the field even without his tri-bike.

Glanced back a few times but no one was in sight which allowed me to cruise into the finish.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing - still need a lot of work on the run but it is getting there and this was a decent time considering everyone was a minute or two off what they normally run.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around, ate food, chatted with everyone.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

C race so no expectations, not getting to bed until 1 AM and drinking the night before probably did not help much.

Event comments:

Good race, pretty course, great food.

Damn, too bad you are so slow in the water, otherwise you might have won this!!

Kick azz race Dan.  Congrats on the overall placing!  I saw in the results that a 16 year old won.  Dude has a serious future in the sport!

Of course not... he didn't have to chase me down at the finish of the run.

Great race! You looked strong on the run and clearly had a great bike split. Well done.

Yes but if you look you will see the first 40 people in from the swim all have the exact same transition time (1:00) which obviously did not happen. The same thing happened last year at Reston.
