I just came back from probably my best 6 mile run in a long time. I walked out of the garage (as it was closing) only to remember last minute that I forgot my HRM, Garmin, and MP3 player. Deciding it was not that long of run to begin with, I just left. After I hit mile three I was amazed at how my legs and chest felt (especially since it is 3pm and about 90 degrees). Not having to check my pace, HR, or worry about which song was playing, I was able to just enjoy running!

Needless to say, I think I'm going to run more often without technology. I may not PR, but I enjoyed my run much more!

I don't miss the Garmin when I forget it (or it's out of juice), but not having my music on a solo run kills my run   But I totally agree on all the other tools!

Had a similar expierance today! My garmin 305 wasn't charged and died on me. Wasn't worried about my pacing, miles, and wasn't worried about hitting a distance like usual. Just enjoyed the sounds, footsteps and the early, early morning light.

Personally, I love to mix it up.  Somedays with Garmin, sometimes just a watch, sometimes nothing.  The ipod tags alongs some days, but not others, as does the dog.  I ran completely electronic free the other day, and it was great!  But after a while, I think all our hidden type A personalities are going to get the better of us and we'll just have to know how we're doing.

x2 (except I don't have a dog).

My Garmin's broken so I've been running with just a stopwatch lately, but even when it's working fine I tend to shake things up. A lot of it depends on the kind of run I'm doing. If I'm doing a very focused workout -- a tempo run, for example -- I'll use the Garmin to make sure I pace it right, and I'll leave the iPod at home. On the other hand, if it's an easy recovery day I'm more inclined to leave the Garmin and use the iPod (listening to music while running tends to relax me, not get me pumped up). Either way, I've found I enjoy my runs pretty equally with or without the gear.

So instead of training you just ran? How very untriathletic of you!

Seriously I sometimes will go for a bike ride and just look around. I never do that anymore. It's so nice ...

Leave your watch behind, too.  Then you won't worry about PRs.

I did that on my lunchtime run today.  It was amazing.  I just lost myself in my thoughts and when I finally showed up back at my door it was 55 minutes later and I felt amazing.

I did miss my tunes a little though....

I stopped running with my iPod about 2 months ago.  I don't see it as a benefit to my running, but I do think it gives me an opportunity to clear my mind while running.

I make a point of running "naked" regularly. I particularly like it for those times when I have a long "just run" workout on a nice day.  I do some of my best thinking at those times.

I think that people like change. You enjoy things the way they are for awhile and than you try new things and enjoy it. While you had a positive experience going from tech to no tech didn't you initially look at how great all that stuff was as you acquired it. Remember the first time you ran with music? Or how cool that was to see your pace?

I don't use HRM and never run with music. I wear a Garmin, but never look at it during the run - it's just for recording info. Sometimes I'm surprised at the info and sometimes I'm disappointed, but I still never look at it during a run. It's just a tool I use to have info to plug into my log. Same thing on the bike, I can't even see my bike computer while I ride. I just record the info at the end. If I didn't keep a log I probably would use any of it.

I don't own a Garmin or an iPod.  So I've never run/bike with one.  Personally I enjoy just being out there by myself, me and the road (or trail).  I have a friend that rides with me fairly often and she's never left her iPod at home.  Makes me a little nervous because I'll ride up next to her and ask her something and she's oblivious to me talking, which makes me wonder when she'll not notice that car (or worse, semi truck) coming up behind her or from the side.  I constantly have problems with people not hearing me say "on your left" because they have their music too loud.  If you can't tell I think iPod's are dangerous, but unfortunately people won't learn until something happens to them because of it (most people still won't learn though).  I know I'll get flamed for this too... but even those of you who ride with it at a low enough volume to hear things around you have come across those that never hear you coming behind them.

Back the topic and off the soapbox though, I run with a stop watch that has HR too, but I only wear the HR strap once every week or two.  When I do, I don't even look at HR until I'm done to see what my perceived effort was compared to how long I was in each HR zone.  As for time, I glance at that about every 3 miles just to know what 5k time I'm pacing myself around.

But, it all could be because I'm on a computer 50+ hours a week and just like to get away from everything when I'm out training.  Go trail run, go run where there's no other noise besides your breathing and your foot steps and nature around you.

i heard you forgot them because you were to worried about running in the cold weather you're having up there in Frisco.
90 at 1500? please tell me you were wearing arm warmers, a fleece cap and enjoyed with a nice cup of hot chocolate by the fire when you returned.

Last night I went to bed knowing I had a 10 mile run to do in the morning and the alarm went off and I was feeling if I got 7 in that it would be a good day...I just wasn't feeling it.  Forgot music and didn't remember until I finished.  I had the best 10 mile run I've had in a couple months today.  Go figure.

I love having a good playlist when I run on the streets but when I run trails, I like hearing the sounds of the birds and the breeze and the lizards scuttling about. I also like being able to listen for any rattlesnakes I might come across! Wink I never go on any bike or run session without my iPhone strapped to my arm though. I've gotten lost on the trails before and having a built in GPS, compass and communication with the outside world is a comforting feeling even if I don't use any of them.

I like naked running sometimes. Naked hiking kinda freaks me out, though - but mostly because I really like to have records of my hikes, elev gain, profiles, a record of where I've been, etc. I use my downloaded tracks as guides for future stuff.

When running, I do always wear a watch. I run/walk, and it just makes it easier to relax and run if I don't have to worry about anything until the beep goes off. Other gear includes a handheld (hiking) GPS and a super-basic HRM. Never, EVER run with music if I'm not on the tready, and even then, not often.

My garmin flew off the mount late last week and my HRM from my timex doesn't work any more. One of the things I've noticed this week is I guess I never looked at the monitoring until after the bike or run because I don't notice it's not there until after the workout.

I like having the data to review and see how I'm doing in comparison to previous workouts but only after I'm sitting back down and all the workout is over.

Never used an MP3 player, I can't stand them.

I've run with him, not a pretty site.  HRM strap doesn't cover much but it helps.
