I've got a Pomeranian, so yeah, he sleeps at the foot of the bed.  Within 5 minutes of leaving, you'll catch him rolling around and making snarfing noises in your pillow.

We have 3 dogs the oldest is 15.  He getting cataracts and is hard of hearing.  When he sleeps he wakes up startled/scared.  We started letting him sleep with us and he sleeps a lot better now.  I guess he still wakes up but knows we are right there.  SO yea we do, just trying to justify it.

Mine is allowed to, but he chooses not to at night. He's a German Shepherd and will try to ball up in my lap like a tiny dachsund, or something, on the couch for a nap during the day and we'll nap together in bed after a long run.
At night, though,  he'll get off the couch, come in to my room and make sure I'm in bed, then go get some water in the kitchen and then to sleep in the bed in the second bedroom until my alrm goes off and he'd back in my bed. It's better than when I had two story place and he'd check out my room, then go back downstairs to the second bedroom, but still weird to me.

Yes.   ChaCha the Pomerainian always sleeps in the bed.   Butter will start off in his dog bed but later in the night,  I feel him jump up in the bed and slide in between Mother and me.

Yup, Sitka sleeps with us. We tried the "no furniture" rule when we first got her. It last all of 20 minutes. Since my daughter came along and is slightly allergic to dog we've retrained Sitka to stay off the couch. She has a dog bed in the living room for lounging. We also got her a dog bed for our room, but that training hasn't gone well. She is still sleeping in the bed with us. She stays on my wife's side down by her feet.

Our older dog, flat coat retriever mix, does not mostly because she could not jump into/out of due to her hips. our newer dog though is not happy unless she is cuddling next to us, on the couch, at the computer, on the bed, you name it. Heck if it is cold out she even lays on our feet under the table while we eat dinner. Needless to say at night she jumps into the bed. She tries to sleep between my wife and I with her head on our pillows but I finally got her trained that her proper sleeping place is the foot of the bed. She is a lab mix with really thin fur so gets cold easily. During last december when my wife had gone to visit relatives in Oregon, I was home alone with her and went to sleep with her at the foot of the bed, Woke up to her lying on my wifes side of the bed, all the way under the covers with just 2 inches of her tail sticking out on the pillow. When she realized I was awake that two inches started to wag really really fast, made me laugh.

Back in my single days, Alex (rottie mix) always slept with me.   Any gentlemen callers had to accept that, but they only got to make that decision after Alex decided to accept THEM.   Yep - I tossed a date out because he wasn't nice to my dog.

Of course you did, as any responsible dog parent would!  That's one of my #1 rules- love my dog, or else!

Easiest decision in the world. Can't be nice to an animal, don't need ya. The next hurdle is if the dog likes the date. If the dog doesn't like you, you're out then too.

DH was heartily approved of by my mother's pointer who hid under the table when most other guests arrived. She ran right up and said hello to him. DH and I have been happily married 19 years. It's science I tell ya!

Dogs don't get to sleep on the bed. They have their own heated dog beds on the floor. Our bed is tall, corgis are short, and would hurt themselves jumping off.

Yes, indeed, they sleep with us. The heeler sleeps around my head and the lab between us. I usually wake up in the middle of the night, crowded and hot and get up to go sleep in the guest bed. The dogs of course merrily follow me there and Jorge gets the bed to himself. He and I both agree I'm the lucky one since the puppies choose to stay with me! I would not have it any other way!

Loki sleeps in his own bed right next to ours and sometimes he'll go down the hall and sleep on the guest bed.  He knows that if we're using the furniture, he is only allowed up if we invite him.  Just one pat on the bed, or couch, and he'll jump up.  If we use the "off the bed" command, he gets right off.   If we're not using the furniture, he is allowed to sleep on the bed.  As soon as we're both up in the morning, he takes his spot.  He used to wait until we left for work, but now he's up there right after I let him out in the morning.

Our two mini schnauzers will sometimes sleep with us.  We never allow the two mini aussies to though - mostly because when the alarm goes off, the Aussies will jump up and run around the bed like lunatics all excited because that means it's time for breakfast!!  At least the Schnauzers will just lay there like we do - wondering if we reeeeaaaally have to get up or can we just sleep for another 20 mins...

mrbbrad - 2010-02-01 12:24 PM I do not have a dog. When I did, it DID NOT sleep in my bed. When I next have a dog it WILL NOT sleep in my bed.

That's what I had planned too.  And with Nikki, it was not an issue.  She was good from day 1 with all the house rules - no begging, no stealing food, no dogs on furniture.  Mojo had (and still has) ADHD. He had also been a stray and was desparate for human contact (and still is very "cuddly", even at 12 years old, and 90 pounds, he likes to curl up in people's laps).  We tried to enforce the "No dogs on the bed" rule.  But he would repeatedly sneak in, all night long.  After several weeks of repeatedly waking up to find him on the bed, and making him get off, we realized that we were suffering more than he was, since WE had to go to work the next day, but HE would just get back on the bed in the daytime and sleep.  And the inability to consistently reinforce the rule (since he would get the reinforcement of being with us, and sleeping on the bed, until we woke up and noticed it) made it impossible to train it out of him.  He did learn to leave food alone, and stop begging at the table, since those rules could be consistently reinforced 100% of the time. And now Mojo doesn't sleep on the bed because his knee is bad and it is too hard to get on the bed.  But he loves to be with me on the couch.

The only way Nikki's life improved with Mojo in the house was that she got to be on furniture. Of course, if I had mini-dogs like dachshunds, I suppose they simply couldn't get on the bed.

My wife had a dog before we met (not the dog we just lost).

My wife later informed me I was a keeper because I was the only guy her dog liked.

I'm also the designated dog blocker on group rides.  Whenever a big dog starts to chase our group, I vear over towards the dog and we play a bit of chase.  I ALWAYS keep an eye out for traffic because I would not want someone's Fido to get run over while chasing me, even if the owner should not have allowed the dog out into the road.

I guess I am part dog.Smile

Our dog (cockapoo), Angus, sleeps on our bed.  My favorite thing is how he learned to respond to the words 'under covers' by digging himself a nest under the covers.  I love snuggling with my dog!

Our 75lb chocolate lab needs to be helped up on to our bed so she comes up only occassionally.  I don't mind but I get so freaking hot it doesn't last long. Either she gets down I am tugging on the deadweight as she plays like she's passed out when i try to get her off.

She gets the comfy couch though and is happy as a clam with that just about all of the time. The issue is when people are on the couch and she's tired or if someone is staying over and sleeping the couch. haha.

We actually have a going to bed system.

1. I go to bed first, so I can get up and run like a good little BTer.
2. As soon as I get comfortable, our beagle comes to bed. When it is cold she prefers to
sleep under the covers between my legs.
3. My wife comes to bed with our terrier mix, who curls up between our pillows and has his
    own fleece blanket.

We had to get a king size bed to accomadate everyone and our dogs combined weight 43 lbs.

I prefer to have one of the dogs lay on the bed first, to warm it up for me (especially in the winter).  Cody is especially good at doing that.

And I just had to clarify your last statement - do you mean that the combined weight of the people + the dogs is 43 pounds?  Or that the dogs alone are 43 pounds? (and that is only about 1/4 of the total dog weight in my house!)

Yep, although he never use to. My mom watched him while my husband and I were taking evening classes three nights a week and well after the term was over my mother had spoiled him so much that he wouldn’t sleep in his kennel after that. I like having him sleep with us because even though he wouldn’t harm a fly, any time he hears something at the door he barks now. When he use to kennel at night he never barked even if somebody rang the door bell. Besides its not like he takes up any room, he is a 10 lb shih tzu (my two cats take more room then he does).

My 16 year old foxhound/collie used to sleep in my bed for years... then I met my (now) husband. He allowed her to sleep with us for a couple years until we finally got married and got the second dog. Then he changed all the rules!! Our Second dog, ... the Saint Bernard/Border Collie actually ate the blankets right off us one night after we only had her for a couple of weeks (she was maybe 11 months old or so). Seriously. Ate the blankets.

Anyway, the Saint got the permanent boot... but the old lady still had bed privileges... she had to get off when my hubbie came to bed.

Sadly, the old girl had a couple strokes when she was 13... and can no longer get on and off the bed. I occasionally lift her on, but she gets so anxious being up there, it is probably selfish of me... so I don't really put her through that anymore.

Occasionally, I allow the Saint on now... when my hubbie is away late on a cold winter night... but she knows as soon as she hears him come in the house... it is in her best interest to quietly jump down and slink back to her dog bed.

I feel like I am trying to hide a secret lover for goodness sakes!! He catches me every time... I can't lie and he always asks... "Was Karma just on the bed"? I usually start laughing and try to deny... but "Methinks I doth protest too much". Hubbie just hates the mass amount of fur that dog leaves behind... not to mention, the Saint definitely SPRAWLS!!

Incidentally neither of my dogs are allowed on any other furniture in our house ever... and if you put them on a piece, they sit there looking worried, like they are already in trouble.

Here is a shot of one of the last times Pooks was on the bed... and Karmalina... was NOT.

When we got Mojo, and he would get on the furniture, Nikki would bark at him, as if to say "You fool! Get off the furniture! Dogs aren't allowed on the furniture!"  When we gave up the battle, I was discussing it with mrs gearboy in the living room, while Nikki was on the floor.  I swear, when I said "OK, we'll let the dogs on the furniture", she jumped up onto a comfy chair that she must have been eyeing for some time, looked at me as if to say "You said I could be here now, right?", and settled in. I think it was small piece of compensation for bringing Mojo into her life, since he stole and destroyed all her stuffed and squeeky toys, constantly pestered her, repeatedly tried to hump her, and basically reinforced her pre-existing belief that all other dogs besides her were more trouble than anything else.

Only when invited.  They know to sleep in their own beds unless I specifically tell them they can come up on the bed.

When they do come up on the bed I have to get in first and lay claim to as much as possible or I will end up shoved on a tiny edge clinging for dear life.  I have one "sprawler" and one that curls up into a nice tiny ball.  I swear my sprawler thinks she's a person...she practically fluffs the pillow first.

I hate how dirty they get the bed though so I usually throw a dog sheet over it first.

This hasn't happened lately because the last few times I tried to invite them up my one dog ripped my comforter (twice) and the other one got so scared she peed a bit.  She doesn't do so well jumping up anymore.

Bed days are probably over for awhile.

Edited to add: Dogs are DEFINITELY not allowed on any other furniture.  So well trained that my friend was trying to get my lab to get up on the couch with her and the dog kept acting all nervous and refused and refused and refused.  After even some urging from me we finally got her up there.  Again, I'm okay with it as long as they are INVITED.  They don't get to just jump up there.  I think it would be totally different if my dogs didn't weigh over 115 pounds combined...
