Total Time = 3h 44m 33s
Overall Rank = 433/518
Age Group = 30-34
Age Group Rank = 44/49
Pre-race routine:

For some unknown reason I woke up at 2:15. This race was on my list, but I've had some knee issues and just decided to do this race yesterday!

Drove up to Loveland and arrived at 5:15. It rained on the way up. Surprised the heck out of me. It (almost) never rains here in the morning.

Event warmup:

Had a Clif Shot and got in the water for a short swim. I was in the LAST wave, so I had plenty of time.

Swim
  • 43m 57s
  • 1500 meters
  • 02m 56s / 100 meters
Comments:

I didn't get into a groove until I had done about 400 meters. Then I felt like I could just swim and swim. I'm not overly thrilled with my time. I have really improved with my swimming, but I'm still not where I want to be. I was in the last wave, but actually caught some people from the wave ahead of me.

The time includes a .25 mile run/walk back to the transition area (longest run I've ever seen!)
What would you do differently?:

Practice more in open water. Get faster.
Transition 1
  • 03m 1s
Comments:

Holy freakin cow, that was one LONG run back the actual transition area! And of course all uphill.
What would you do differently?:

Practice transitions to make them faster
Bike
  • 1h 51m 4s
  • 29.5 miles
  • 15.94 mile/hr
Comments:

DAMN. This was one H-I-L-L-Y course! Started out with a bunch of rollers. Then there was the BIG climb....took forever, but I passed a bunch of people on the hills. At times I was reduced to 6.5 miles an hour going up these 2 GIANT hills! It was crazy. PLUS I still have my double with the 12-23 on the rear....I got a compact crank, but need to put it on! I was SO wishing for extra gears going up. You know it's a big hill when you hit 40 mph and maintain that for 1-2 mins on the backside of the hill!

I was hoping for an average of 17 mph or greater, but with all that climbing, no way.

On the way back, I hit a headwind once we got to the open area, out of the foothills. There was no wind through the foothills

There were a LOT of turns on the bike course. The volunteers were everywhere and it was awesome!
What would you do differently?:

More hill work. Start climbing in the (big) foothills and mountains. Get the freakin compact crank put on!
Transition 2
  • 02m 37s
Comments:

T2 was good. Had a gel, and off running
Run
  • 1h 03m 53s
  • 6.2 miles
  • 10m 18s  min/mile
Comments:

OK, so here's where I noticed the knee. It bothered me, but was tolerable. I walked a bit to keep it under control. It was freakin hot!
What would you do differently?:

Run faster and have no injury?
Post race
Warm down:

joeinco, and my husband and daughter, and my PT and his wife all cheered me on into the finish. Had some water and a popsicle. Cheered on kimj81 for her finish. Walked a heck of a long way to get the food (which was an awesome spread!).

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I'm just not fast. Plus the knee injury

Event comments:

Awesome, well organized race with good food! :) I'm all about the food. The bike course was VERY tough for me, but I'll start working on that and soon!

Cathy, you just freakin' ROCK!  I'm surprised that you even noticed me dragging fanny up that last hill on the run while you were biking.  It was a hoot to bring you in to the finish line - how many times have you done that for the rest of us?

Great job!!

I'm SOOOOO glad you got to race!!  Great job - hills and wind are a tough combo!  Hope your knee is still good tomorrow.  Now your PT can really appreciate why you need help

How come I miss the race with the great food? (OK, greenland sucked, but SPlatte was GREAT - I shouldn't complain!)

Go Cathy Go!

What is this crap about you being slow.  You are freakin awesome.  I can't believe you did so awesome with you not being able to train hard lately with your knee.

Cathy you ARE a SuperStar.  You are an awesome wife/mom/nurse/friend...you do it all and you make it look easy!  You ROCK!

HOSS!

Great race, Cathy. I agree with you that the course was HILLY. I wasn't expecting that. I think I was in my aerobars maybe 1/2 the time. The rest of the time was spent with my hands on the top of the bars in a climbing position! I'm so glad your knee didn't force you to withdraw. I thought about you the whole race and hoped it was ok.

That's what I'm talking about, RACER.  Nice job Cathy - the awesome result speaks volume for the hard work, incredible motivation, and perseverence through the kneee issue.  Congrats again!!!

Nice race.  That's pretty good bike time in the hills with only a 12x23.  I bet when you get the compact crank and a 12x27 on you'll ride the hills even better.

What kind of crazy, insane athlete wakes up one day and decides on a whim to do an Oly the next?  I can see you're one of those types that can just roll with the punches, as they say, "ain't no mountain high enough".

In addition to being an incredible athlete, you're very courageous as well!
