tcovert - 2010-06-17 3:02 PM Sprints, Olys...never.  I wouldn't call any of it "fun"...but "satisfying," definitely.

At HIM and IM, there's definitely dark spots and for me they're usually late on the bike.

Mile 90 on the IM bike was tough for me... still another 22 miles to go but had already been on the bike for a few hours.

Miles 18-20 of a marathon are similar -- not yet in the final 10K stretch, but still have been on my feet for a while !

I always end up asking myself this at the start line...have since high school cross country meets!  I think I am asking myself in anticipation/fear of the pain I'm about to inflict....

Honestly, I think I jumped into this a little too soon.  I thought 2mos. was PLENTY of time to get my swimming under control for short sprint swim legs.  It's been WAY more of a struggle than I ever could have imagined.  My HR gets up (anxiety) just thinking, now, about my tri coming up on Sunday.

To answer the OP's question.......Before and during the swim (I've only done 1 sprint).  When I look ahead to the swim leg and KNOW I'll have NO issues with it.......tri's will begin to be the fun I imagined.  Right now, I'm almost ashamed to say that the races aren't THAT much fun (because of the aforementioned).  I'm extremely proud of my 1st race.....as far as overall time.  I did better in the bike and run than I envisioned.  The swim?  I survived.

I'm really looking forward to the day when I embrace the event as a chance to see how well I did preparing (in totality).  If I had it all to do over again........I'm not sure I'd have signed up for the events I have, so soon.  MAD respect to the fish among us.

"Why the #*% am I doing this" points:
 - standing on the beach looking at how far away that first buoy is.
 - running out from T2 and trying to get my 1-tonne legs to move
 - 1km left in the run and wondering if I will make it to the finish without puking/colapsing/dying.

"This is why I am doing it" points:
 -
getting out of the water
 - the entire bike leg
 - crossing the finish line
 - the hour/days/weeks after the race when you think back and smile.

x10  - I feel exactly the same at the exact same spots.

I ask myself "Why am I doing this?" as soon as I have finished setting up transition and am walking towards the water.  I get that same eerie feeling every time I've finished T.A. and am going to swim.  Once I get in the water, I feel a lot better, but that's my nervous time.

I get my first answer after my heartrate settles down a bit on the bike after I've been through the swim and T1.

I get my final answer as I cross the finish line on the run.  I love running down the fast swimmers, but slow runners!

LOL Same here... Once I'm into the race I'm too focused on getting calmed down and into my rythym.

Really I only think that when I am racing in cold, wet, miserable weather. Otherwise I am fine being there. Cold water and me do not mix. I aslo hate when it's super windy and cold. Heat and wind, fine.

Now iin training I have a few days where it's all I can do to keep going

The only time I question myself is when the alarm clock goes off at some insanely early hour. Once Im up Im usually good to go.

Personally, I really dread it when I see the swim bouys for the first time and think "thats a LOT farther than I though it would be" and when I see the first mile marker and think "that was only 1 mile?!?!?! It felt like at LEAST 3!!!"

+1 for "never on race day" (then again, I am a sprinter...don't really have the time for such thoughts!)

I do question it in the dead of winter, getting up at 5am for an early morning swim, when it is pitch black out, and the wind is howling, the wife is cuddling, and a cold pool is waiting. Ugggh. Hate those days.

During triathlons...only when I'm in the mosh pit during the swim start.  Everything else is pure fun...even the last mile or so when I empty the tank and feel like I'm going to puke.  But so far I have been well trained for all my races...I haven't done a triathlon yet that I wasn't supremely confident that I could finish strong.  That may change as I venture past the OLY distance.

During my first marathon...after mile 21.

During training...when I crashed my bike, or during my first 20 minute all out power test.  Everything else about training is fun...including waking up at 4 am.

trigal38 - 2010-06-17 1:23 PM I like the training more than the races too. You can't do anything about bad weather or wind direction on race day. You can work around all of that stuff during training (sort of

My first two races of this year were both in the rain so I was asking myself that question for the entire race.
Race #1 "What are you doing riding your bike in the pelting rain with 25 mph winds in your face? You should be at home snuggled under a blanket eating chocolate. This is not normal."

Race #2 "What are you doing standing in a freaking wetsuit, in the rain, getting ready to swim in a shivering cold lake covered in slimy moss? Normal people do not do this....."

Ha ha, it even sounds crazy to me now! Oh well, it's all part of the experience that we share. Every other person in the race probably feels just like you. I'm still trying to figure out why I'm doing it I guess because I can. Because I swim, bike and run anyway, I might as well try to race.

Made me laugh And you're right--normal people don't do this.

had my first of those experiences during my last HIM, when my legs and back were killing me while I had been out in the pouring rain in low 60 degree weather on the bike for 3 hours. I was convinced I was done for the day. It was pure misery.

but then a miracle happened and I had the run of my life and after crossing that finish line I had never been so energized in my life!

Usually when the alarm goes off at 4am and the entire drive to the venue...  But once the wetsuit is on?  I'm a gamer!

x2, exactly.  My alarm is set for 4:30 ON A SUNDAY?????   For me though, once the wetsuit is on, the butterflies start.  Once the horn goes off, then I'm good

You get to sleep in till 430...not fail. I question it about an hour earlier...Boo

When my alarm goes off at 4:30 am the morning of the race!!

ETA: During the race, I start to wonder toward the end of the bike, and then the entire run is a big "why am i doing this" existential experience.  That's how racing should feel.  If you don't have those moments, you've got more to give!

When my alarm goes off and when I'm waiting for my wave to start. After that it's awesome!

Almost always during the first half of a swim.  In fact, not only am I questioning why I am there that day - but why the heck I do triathlons at all.

Why did I spent those many hours in the pool, why did I think I had any business doing this, why did I gave advice to any newbie swimmers about not panicking, etc.

It's a very dark time for me!

Every time I get in the pool to swim.  I go in with high hopes that this will be the day I break the barrier and 500m into it as I am gasping for breath and my form has fallen apart I wonder why I just do not do duathlons instead.

Yet still I persevere.

Either a mile into the run of an Oly or the last mile of a Sprint is when I ask myself, the answer definitely comes once I get across the finish line. Lately I've been asking myself the question on the last 5-10 miles of my long rides when my butt is hurting, but the answer usually comes once I get off the bike and realize isn't wasn't all that bad and actually quite enjoyable and worth waking up early.

Mile 19-23 of the marathon.  Each time, every time...

I'm just too big to run that far.  Yet I still do it.  Hmm

The OP answered the question in his post...

Looking at the swim start always makes me wonder WTF I am doing there....

Monster hills on the bike make me think about it

My feet went numb on the run in my last tri, actually ran the last half of the run course barefooted.  Most definitely asked myself WTF I was doing that day cause the swim sucked too.
