What or who has been good this week?

- I'm continuing to recover well from dengue/typhoid and have been able to do some light activity

- I had the best mushroom soup in the world yesterday.

- My kitten Gollum is recovering from a virus too

- I sang with a small chorus at the 9th anniversary memorial of the Bali Bombing. One of the songs we sang was my arrangement. It was a very beautiful occasion and although there were lots of tears many loved friends were also remembered.

- I watched a DVD! The King's Speech (yes this is big news for me, only got a small portable player lately, no TV)

Hmmm... good stuff this week...

Tony surprised me (in the good way) and made me a full Thanksgiving dinner on Monday

NAV Canada has agreed to keep me in the hiring pool for another 3 years just in case we end up in Vancouver at that time

I have made some fabulous friends here and we had a great time at WINE & cheese night on Wednesday, leading to the nursing of a hangover at work on Thursday...

Only 67 more sleeps til I drag Tony with me to Vancouver for Xmas!!!

- I ran my goal half marathon on Sunday and got a PR out of it and had fun doing it.  You know you've done lost your mind when at mile 11.5 One Republic's Good Life comes on your iPod and you belt out a line because you're having such a good time.

- I had a lovely dinner and wine evening with girlfriends on a Tuesday.

- My first run post race felt really good on Wednesday.

- Being sick held off until post race.  I'm sick now but I'll take it since I fought it off for race day.

Curried Butternut Squash Coconut Bisque

1 med. Butternut squash peeled seeded and cut into chunks

1 med. Onion cut into chunks

1 med potato, peeled and cut into chunks

¼ (more or less) cup olive oil

½ tsp ground ginger

3 cloves garlic chopped fine

¼ tsp white pepper

1 tbsp onion powder

1 tsp salt

½ madras curry powder

Combine the above in a heavy bottom pan over med-high heat until onions begin to clarify and a bit of brown crust appears on the bottom of the pan.

Deglaze the pan with 1½ cups unsalted vegetable stock. Then add enough stock to cover the vegetables and simmer until the they are tender. Taste for seasoning. The stock should seem a little too spicy (the coconut milk and cream will cool it down considerably).

Remove all vegetables and a bit of the stock and liquefy in a blender, or use an immersion blender to smooth the soup.

Add:

1 can coconut milk and 1/3 cup light cream (for vegan version substitute the cream from another can of coconut milk for the cream)

Pinch of cardamom (opt)

Return soup to a simmer. Serve hot. Garnish with dried dill weed.

My morning commute takes me down an East-facing hill at the perfect time to see a spectacular red sunrise (twice this week).  Even 2 minutes later, the color and perspective have changed.

Well, I finally booked tickets for the trip I have been threatening my husband with for a long time.  I honestly don't think he or my sister (who we're visiting) or my brother-in-law (also visiting) thought I'd do it.  I am beyond excited about adding another continent to my experiences.

Asia?

Pretty quiet week.

Senior night at the football game tonight so we get to escort our son during the pregame to the center of the field to be announced.  Attending a charity fund raiser tomorrow night with friends which should be fun.

Good? Being a dad.

I took my boys on a "Dad date" last night. We bought halloween costumes, then went to pizza place with arcade games. Had a blast! They are 6 and 3. Gotta do this stuff before they get too "cool" to hang out with dad.

Sent my wife Valentine Roses (I have a weird philosophy on that, if it needs explanation).

Reconnected with an old friend. Facebook is good and all, but it reminded me to pick up the phone and connect for real.

My kids still rock.

My wife got her knee fixed and is signing up for her first 5k. This is a big deal for her.

* My wife left love notes for me all over the house... Okay, all over the kitchen.

* I found a motorcycle part on CL that I've wanted for 2 years, but it was always too expensive. I'll pick it up tonight and get it painted this weekend, and maybe installed on Sunday.

* I registered for a trail run, and I didn't get hurt the same day. The run is next weekend, and while it's only a 10K (Eric is doing the half-marathon), it should be fun.

I am taking off this afternoon to watch the boy run at the conference XC meet.  Hoping he continues his streak of weekly PR's. The team will be decked out in their new warm-ups.

I got an A on my first Calculus exam.

I'm going to Rhinebeck, NY this weekend to spend time with my fibery friends, pet sheep, and watch herding trials.

I changed my major from Chemistry to Public Health and couldn't be happier (or feel more relieved.)

I dropped Organic Chemistry this semester and am making arrangements to get 'er done in the summer.

My husband received a job offer (same company) for a position that will give him new experiences...he's excited about it, even though we don't know where he'll end up.

We got good news on my FIL. He was released from the hospital this week and has been given a clean report. Thank you to everyone for the good thoughts and prayers.

My wife and I go on vacation starting today. OK, so we aren't going anywhere, but sometimes those are the best kind of vacay's. And since we live 2 miles from the Gulf of Mexico, how bad can it possily be?

And on a much smaller scale, I got my bike back and it no longer clicks when I pedal. All equipment is ready for next week's race.

More importantly, have a blast at Rhinebeck!!!  I'm SO jealous!

- well work has been really slow, like so slow I could have been on vacation most of this week and it would not have made a difference or impacted anything. that is good and bad.

-We were scheduled to close on our new house today but that is looking like it would be a miracle if it was to happen. Apparently the underwriters office for our mortgage has just been sitting on it instead of processing it (they have everything they need and it should be perfectly clear and good to go but for some reason they just are not doing anything with it despite our mortgage person continually calling and bugging them). I was planning on taking today off, closing, and then waking up tomorrow morning in our new place, walking down to my doc and fishing all morning long - I guess I just get to keep dreaming about that now for another week or however long it takes.

- One of my late meetings yesterday got cancelled and I was able to get out of going to our Board Meeting to give a presentation so instead of getting home at 8 pm, I got home on time around 5:45. That was a nice surprise.
