You sound like me. I only do triathlons. No bike races or group rides. I have no desire to do group rides. So my answer is sell the road bike. Or find a new triathlete that could use the bike to get started and give it to them.

Subject: RE: Owning two bikes?

courtney_leone - 2011-12-27 11:55 AM I was surprised Christmas morning with a new Cervelo P3!!! So...my question is: Do I need to keep my old bike? It's a Masi road bike and pretty old but still in good shape. I can't imagine using it anymore (I'm not a recreational rider) and I want to spend as much time as I can on my new bike. Thoughts? Also, I live in an apartment with little storage so space is a concern as well. I just worry that if I get rid of it (or sell it) I might regret it...

Convert it to a fixie for riding around town.  I have two bikes in my apartment (one fixie and a new Giant TCR Composite) I ride the fixie around to the local resturants, bars, and grocery store.

I had some input, then I realized that I currently have 4 bikes in my living room... (3 tri bikes and a roadie) and am looking at a mountain bike and a townie...

so I suppose my advice would be pretty skewed.

I use the roadie for most of my riding, and on the trainer.  Take my tri bike out once in a while for fun and races.  Nothing wrong wth having multiple bikes

I would keep it.  You do this long enough and you will get injured. Coming back from an injury, or rehabbing, may be easier on a bike with a less radical position.  Look at it this way.....if you don't get rid of it would you ever be sorry? if you need it and don't have it you will be.  Just some food for thought.

I have a few people in my running group who are interested in my road bike because of that very reason.

Perfect! You have your answer.

If you get rid of it you may regret it later. If not you can always still get rid of it. For me it is nice to have a dedicated bike for (insert preference here). For me I have one for travel, roadie for hoome, tri for home, XC race (front suspension only), and dual squishy for lots of fun. They all get used, some more than others. Of course i have space and older bikes I have given to younger people getting into riding. Good karma for the sport

When you turn your primary bike in for yearly checkup, etc. you'll still have one to ride unless you get rid of it.

Yes, owning two bikes is silly. Three is better, four is ideal. Roadie, tri bike, mountain bike, and cruiser type you can ride with flip flops.

Can't believe nobody has given the fomula for the correct number of bikes yet

I would not get rid of it but I also prefer only to ride my tribike for racing and maybe a tune up ride or two before a race. While the position is sustainable for the distance I race, it is not comfortable and I prefer to do most of my riding on my road bike.

Besides those two bikes, I also have my commuter bike (road bike with fenders, rack, panniers), cyclocross, MTB and an old road bike that I hope to build up as a fixie. I don't think I need any more bikes but you never know...

Keep it. You can never have too many bikes.

You need to by a cyclocross bike, a mountain bike, and a training tribike.  Furniture is over rated.

I have 4 bikes and ride them all to some extent, but ride my Tri bike the most.  I also have a lot of storage space so that isn't an issue.  If I was really cramped for space I would probably get rid of the roadie and donating it or selling it to a friend or running acquaintance sounds like a great idea.

Wow, you must have been very good indeed in 2011 if Santa brought you a P3 (and if he knows your measurements)!

I would keep the roadie. There are too many situations where I'm more comfortable riding that one than my P2.

For storing bikes in a confined space you might check out this Topeak bike stand. It's an easy way of stacking one bike above another. It can take as many as 4. I found it very easy to set up.

I was just wondering that myself!  For all the reasons given to keep it, I would not get rid of it either.  Having a spare is probably the #1 reason out of all of them.  There are lots of stacking options for your bike like was shown, I use one that leans on a wall and holds 2 bikes, it works great except I have way more bikes than it holds.  Oh yeah...(n + 1)

Last week my bike dealer just told me that the trend goes towards a fourth bike :D So yeah - keep it!! I have a tri bike, a roadie and a mountainbike. Let's see what's next. I like the cruiser idea hehehe

As for space... I have one of those in my apartment: http://www.amazon.de/Fahrrad-Wandhalter-DUO-210-39-60/dp/B002NFP0K0... - that way one bike doesn't really take up more space than two.

There are people who have many bikes, and don't mind filling their living rooms with them.  Are you one of those?  No, not if you say you have limited storage space; that implies you would store your bike rather than leave them in the living room.

There are people who own both a road bike and a tri bike, and leave the tri bike for racing and use the road bike for training.  That's not your intent either, nor is recreational riding.

So if you have limited storage space, own a tri bike you want to use for training and racing, and have people interested in your old bike, by all means sell the road bike.

My roadie has a trainer tire on it and it's very convenient and easier than swapping tires or having to get a wheel and cassette.

I have several bikes and can because I have the space. Sounds like a classic hoarder...

The question that I'd ask is what options would you have if you need a road bike and don't have one? If I had limited space and wasn't using a bike, I'd easily sell knowing that if it became clear that I was wrong, that I could pick up a decent used bike pretty easily.

I recently heard that people hoard mostly because they don't think the future will provide what they need. I'm optimistic both about the future and my ability to secure what I feel I need so I would error on getting rid of what I don't use.

We have two road bikes, two tri bikes, and two mountain bikes. Keep them all! We've got trainer tires on the tri bikes and can use our road bikes as "winter" bikes, but we live in Minnesota and road salt is an issue for about 6 months out of the year.

I was in the same situation a while back and gave my old roadie to my daughter when she entered the sport.  As I upgraded, she eventually got my first tri bike and now my old roadie is being ridden by her boyfriend who has also started riding.  Each time when the bike was gifted along, it brought another glint in someone's eye.

I still debate about getting another roadie for a lot of reasons others have mentioned as to why you should keep it but just ride up on the hoods if I need a bit more comfort.  Not ideal but that's OK.

Is that the 'X + 1' formula where 'X' is the number of bikes you currently have?

I have a roadie and a tri bike, but they both get quite a bit of use. The tri bike is currently on the trainer, but I got in a nice ride on the roadie in 35 degree weather today. I also do some commuting on my road bike as well. If I were to break it down, it's probably like 70-75% time on the tri bike and 25-30% on the road bike.
