Master 6834 Englewood, Florida | Subject: More Manatee Mayhem - 2017 Edition - Closed Welcome to the Manatees. We are all mentors and mentees, which sounds like manatees--hence our name. Some iteration of this group has been going on for over 11 seasons and I've lost track of what season we are in! All experience levels and goals welcome.

We live near Raleigh, NC. I've lived in the Raleigh area since 1990. Before that I lived, in order of appearance, in Newfoundland; Milwaukee; Wappingers Falls, NY; Waterloo, IA; Ramsey, NJ; and Shippensburg, PA. I ran cross country in high school and college and then "took a break." You know, got married, stopped paying attention to my fitness and weight, etc. Then someone gave me a picture of me and my dog. I looked at it and tried to identify that fat person with my beautiful puppy! No way! Started riding bikes. Stopped eating junk. Started riding bikes a lot. Decided to run some. Joined a gym with a pool and decided that I should swim too… Now I'm looking forward to my sixth iron distance event! FAMILY STATUS: Married with one dog. CURRENT TRAINING: I am currently on a run focused block of training. I'm doing just a tiny bit of swimming and virtually no biking right now. 2017 RACES/EVENTS: Heart and Soul half marathon GOALS WHAT MAKES ME A GOOD MANATEE: I enjoy supporting my Manatee friends! I have learned a lot from past Manatee groups and I hope to learn from this group as well! Also, I'm an expert-level 'inspirer' here on BT! |

Royal(PITA) 14270 West Chester, Ohio | Subject: RE: More Manatee Mayhem - 2017 Edition Name Judi Family Situation...married, 2 daughters referred to as Thing One and Miss Thing....they are all grown up but Thing One lives home since it's her first year teaching & Miss Thing is a third year college student with eyes on a PhD in neuroscience. We have 3 cats. Mocha a tuxedo kitty, Snickers a calico and Miska a little dilute tortie. Social media....here, FaceBook & recently on Instagram. Story....Love running, my legs don't. Love biking, my job has taken over my life and doesn't allow a sustainable training pattern. Neve much cared for the technicalities of triathlon swimming. No longer racing, but I love the sport still. I use my logs cause the blog portion is so nice to process out things that one might not want to put on other forms of social media....I am a true inspire me addict and communicate faithfully with these. SO if you need help with this I can help there! RACES....LAST ONE was last July I did the Aquabike at Rev 3. I am going to be a walking coach for my favorite 10K in April. Current training...mostly Beach Body videos cause I can do them before work or on my lunch. Some running and biking and the very rare swim workout ( last one 3 months ago so don't hold your breath waiting for me to swim) Goals...to continue the war with the weight and lose the next 20 pounds ...to be a little more social here cause the banter is fun....but I'm kind of an introvert when there's a gazillion people talking about a lot of things I shut down cause I feel lost. So, if I disappear for periods of time you know you can find my wicked out thoughts in the blog & I will respond to the inspires or PM's.
What makes me a good mentee/ mentor? I love the sport and I did do it for about 9 years ...I have raced sprints & Olympic....5K, 10K, HM and one ever so disastrous full marathon....century rides....even some open water swim races. |

Master 4452 | Subject: RE: More Manatee Mayhem - 2017 Edition NAME: Kirsten OTHER SOCIAL MEDIA: @bcvettech on Instagram and Twitter. STORY: Lifelong athlete. Like many, school/life/work got in the way and I stopped doing much. Got into running in 2009, ran a marathon in 2010. Always wanted to try triathlon (I remember hearing about IMCanada in 1982 when I was 10 and thought "they are crazy; I want to do that") and running was hard on my many old injuries. Started training for tri in 2011, first race in 2012 and I was hooked. Have done multiple sprints and standards, several HIM and IMC in 2014 and IM Copenhagen in 2015. I came to BT before my first race, got into another mentor group for one season and have been with the Manatees ever since. I knew nothing when I started; this is a great place to learn! FAMILY STATUS: Partnered, coming up on 10 years. Three dogs, two cats. CURRENT TRAINING: Sporadic! I am on holidays until Jan 4 and am eating too much! I will get back at it next week, likely 2x s/b/r and 2 strength per week. Also planning on taking a 4 week snowshoeing program in Feb; part of that is a year pass to Grouse Mountain, which has the Grouse Grind. I have been wanting to do the Grind on a semi-regular basis for a few years, so paying for the pass will give some motivation! 2017 RACES/EVENTS: Oliver Half Iron (Registered) Whistler 70.3 (Registered) Coeur D'Alene 70.3 (Likely, but not yet Reg'd) IM Cozumel (Likely, but not yet Reg'd) Local trail race series (Likely, not yet Reg'd) Two "Five Peaks Adventures" Races (Likely, not yet Reg'd) GOALS: Have fun, stay healthy. Strengthen weak hip. WHAT MAKES ME A GOOD MANATEE: Hmmm, not sure I can make this claim!! I read all posts, but don't always find the time to reply. I try to check in regularly. I am good at providing support if you need it, and very willing to pass on what I have learned about tri! Looking forward to 'meeting' everyone. |

Master 6834 Englewood, Florida | Subject: RE: More Manatee Mayhem - 2017 Edition I guess I should jump on board as well: Name - cdban66/Chris OTHER SOCIAL MEDIA: https://www.facebook.com/cdban66, https://twitter.com/CDBan, https://www.instagram.com/cdban66/, https://www.strava.com/athletes/2116063, STORY: I had been somewhat athletic in High School, playing soccer, beach volleyball and basketball, but that was a long time ago. Marriage, two children, business ownership, and the general busyness of life just got in the way. A number of years back I began going to the gym, lifting weights and such. Then, in late July, 2010, we had a family weight loss challenge. In order to lose (BTW, I did win the challenge), I began running. DD2 suggested we run a race at Walt Disney World, so I began to prep for that and my older sister joined in as well. Before that race had happened, I began looking for more challenge/diversity, since I was enjoying the training. I had a friend who had been in tri’s a while back, he gave me his old bike and it grew from there. Now I try to race a few times a year and have begun expanding my knowledge base with bike mechanic work. STATUS: I am a 6’3”, 50+ yr old male and I've been married for nearly 30 years. I have 2 girls, both in their 20’s. My wife, Ann or TW(THE Wife), is the most wonderful person a man could have in his life and has been very supportive of this addition to my lifestyle. Currently working on MTB improvements. CURRENT TRAINING: I have found that I really enjoy trail running and bike riding, however I am currently struggling with consistency and a PF flare-up. I have begun to occasionally add more variety to my biking with the MTB and the fixed gear road bike. I have struggled to consistently do the stretching/recovery work that seems to help so much. LAST YEAR: Not many positives came out of triathlon in 2016, although that which didn’t kill me has only made me stronger. 2016 RACES: I only raced a couple of sprint tris last year. I also did a HM and a few other running races. I pretty much stopped racing by September, grew apathetic and lethargic and gained 15 pounds. 2017 races: The year starts on the MTB, with a 40 miler in January. I also have a few tentative trail races on the schedule. After that, I will do a couple of sprint tris in the summer. I am hoping to do an Xterra event this year. BODY COMP: As I mentioned above, this all started as part of a family weight loss challenge. I started at 240 lbs. At my lowest I had reached 207. Currently I am about 230, with a goal weight of 210+/- for race season. WHAT WOULD MAKE ME A GOOD MANATEE: I am not the fastest, but I am supportive, upbeat, and would like to be in better shape, not just for triathlon, but for life. I have done a 5 day intensive bike mechanic class a few years ago, which may have set me up for my post retirement career. I read logs for info and motivation, post a bit and you will likely receive an "Inspire" or 2 from me every week.

Master 8248 Eugene, Oregon | Subject: RE: More Manatee Mayhem - 2017 Edition NAME: Karen OTHER SOCIAL MEDIA: Nope. That's how I make time to train! STORY: I'm a long-time running addict (pretty much continuously since age 10--really!) and sometimes swimmer, but somehow never got into tri until age 41. I'm an elementary (at times middles school) teacher and have spent much of my career working in international schools overseas, mainly in China and (most recently) Vietnam. Decided to get back into running shape after 25 years of mostly recreational jogging, and somehow drifted into master's swimming and then triathlon. Much of my racing is in SE Asia, mostly Singapore. My proudest tri accomplishment so far is qualifying for 70.3 Worlds last September in Australia. My least proud accomplishment is....er....riding 10K or more extra in that event! When not overseas, I call Eugene, Oregon home. My parents keep threatening to move to Idaho, though. Honestly am not sure why/how I got into endurance sports. Maybe because I'm not good at anything else (at least athletically speaking)? Endurance just seems to come more naturally to me than other things. I love anything outdoors and swim/bike/run, at least in the Pacific Northwest, is a great excuse to get out of the house. Also enjoy hiking, bike touring, photography, collecting fabric, and designing my own clothes. FAMILY STATUS: Single; on way to becoming Crazy Cat Lady. Two fur kids, Smudgee (15 pounds) and Tomoko (6 pounds) in Saigon, who may well be Vietnam's largest and smallest adult cats. I also have an 18-year-old Angora cat, Xiaoxue, from a "previous relationship" (China) at home in Oregon. CURRENT TRAINING: Since the end of last year, I have been working with an online coach. Right now pretty much in base-building mode for a couple of HIM, an Olympic, and a couple of sprint events in the spring. THIS YEAR'S RACES/EVENTS: IM Cour d 'Alene 70.3; hometown Oly (Tri at the Grove), assuming Eugene is still my hometown (maybe would come back anyway, even if it isn't), maybe IM Chongqing 70.3 (one of the "China races" where you can qualify for Kona). The latter depends on the visa situation, which I'm guessing might become challenging. GOALS/OBJECTIVES/DESIRES: Challenge, adventure, fitness, meeting interesting people. I am just a better and happier person when I am pushing myself physically and mentally and keeping in shape. In terms of racing, I would be really happy to have a good race at Cour d'Alene, break 2:30 for the Oly, and (a very outside chance here) qualify for Kona. WHAT MAKES YOU A GOOD MANATEE: I really value the camaraderie and advice of this group. In Saigon, almost all my training is solo; I only know a few other serious triathletes and only one other female triathlete. As far as what I can contribute, if there is any mistake related to running or triathlon training and racing, I have probably made it multiple times and can warn others about it! I can also be a good source of information about training and racing in the heat, and am always happy to host traveling Manatees should you happen to come to Saigon! |

Veteran 2441 Western Australia | Subject: RE: More Manatee Mayhem - 2017 Edition NAME: Stacey (I live in Australia) OTHER SOCIAL MEDIA: I check facebook very now and then but that's it. STORY: pretty active as a kid thanks to my amazing parents, the rule in our house was that we had to do at least one sport all year. So I grew up mainly playing basketball and netball and swimming. I also did a bit of hockey, athletics and triathlon. Never the fastest or the best at any of them but still did them. The usual story of started working full time, got married and got fat. My work involves a lot of after hours meetings and so team sports are no longer an option so my brother suggested that I do triathlons and I have been doing them now for maybe 5 years. I'm not fast and in fact I am often last but I don't care. This past year my mum, my sister E and my best friend K have all taken up running and together we are going to tackle the Disney dopey challenge in 2018. FAMILY STATUS: married with a pack of mastiffs CURRENT TRAINING: run focused and at present engulfed in a challenge with mum and K which involves the person who drops the most number of training days between 26/12/2016 and 31/01/2017 handing $100 each to the other 2. E is our adjudicator as she is having surgery next week and isn't allowed to run until February. 2017 RACES: no tris for 2017 but a number of running events. GOALS: finish my first marathon in 2017 and lose 15kg in the process of training for it. WHAT MAKES ME A GOOD MANATEE: ? I am normally behind on the conversation by around 12hours and I don't have much tri knowledge to offer. |

Veteran 2441 Western Australia | Subject: RE: More Manatee Mayhem - 2017 Edition Well Manatees the "Turtle January Challenge" is working - that is the nickname Mum, E, K and I seem to have ended up with when we run together. I think it is partly because we are slow (except for E) and partly because the shirts we wore to the first run we did together had turtles on the back of them. Anyway, so far all 3 of us have done the 5 runs that were scheduled for this week so if that keeps up we will all be keeping our money and spending it on ourselves. And as of today it official that I am weird. Expert 1694 Illinois | Subject: RE: More Manatee Mayhem - 2017 Edition A shiny new Mantatee Thread!!!! NAME: Anne, I live in central Illinois, right outside of Springfield. OTHER SOCIAL MEDIA: I am on Facebook and am friends with some of you. STORY: Grew up horseback riding as my only form of exercise and then I went through several decades of slothitude while I was a smoker. Started doing some "exercising" in my late 30s, mostly video stuff like The Firm, and then dabbled in running a bit. I liked how it helped with quitting smoking and losing a bit of weight. Learned to swim in my 40s, did first sprint tri that year. Backstroked most of it and swam waaaaaayyy off course, but finished. In 2015 I finished IMFL. FAMILY STATUS: Long term relationship with Steve (we'll tie the knot one of these days), 3 spoiled kitties and some tropical fish. My daughter is 27 and lives in the same town. CURRENT TRAINING: I used a Training Peaks coach and am mostly in base building for some spring gravel races and a half maraton 2017 RACES: bunch of gravel grinders, a half marathon in April and possibly May, an olympic tri in June, IM Steelhead in August, IMLOU in October GOALS: Lose the 10 pounds I put on in 2016, try not to get injured from running (have been dealing with PF and an achilles tear),improve my running WHAT MAKES ME A GOOD MANATEE: Although I have been on BT since 2008, I waited until 2016 to join the Manatees. I love this site and was sad to see that so many people had left BT. The Manatees seem like a cohesive group that have been around for a long time --- there's a lot of wisdom and experience here. I don't have a lot to contribute and I don't post often, mostly due to time constraints, but enjoy perusing the threads. |

I'll do a bio later - and dig into reading yours - i love doing this! :D My sister gave me an entry to a half marathon in September (to run with her) - which is pretty soon after baby (due at the end of April) but i am pretty sure, barring anything major i'll be able to get through it. So it's nice to have something on the calendar. Even though i have no idea what life will look like. AND - our reno is officially under way - our little house is gutted and a little addition that we didn't like is torn off. It's very real now But the contractor is optimistic that the job should be done in 7 months so we can have our house in the summer. That will be so great! I am so looking forward to it. I've never lived in a brand new place. It feels very fancy. |

Member 667 | Subject: RE: More Manatee Mayhem - 2017 Edition Name - Robin, but if we're in school I will answer to Miss, mom, and even granny! Social Media - FB, Twitter (fortissimo15) and Instagram (fortissimo_15) Story - I'm boring. I teach middle school band and orchestra in the same school I attended. I was a swimmer growing up but got burned out and walked away from it the second day of practice my freshman year of college. My senior year of college I still needed a PE credit so I took lap swimming and got a C because it was too cold to walk across campus and get into a cold pool. Or I was lazy and still burned out on swimming. You decide. I finally got back in a pool to do laps 20 years later. Now I wish I would have never burned out and quit. I have a surgically did-repaired left foot/ankle that my coach and I call "the limb". Family- Husband, who spoils me with all things related to our cheap (haha) sport. Jack - Golden Receiver (he never retrieves, catches and runs!) Dug- think of the golden retriever in the movie UP! and you have our Dug! Caesar is a skinny 20-22 pound cat. (don't believe me he's skinny? Just ask him he will tell you we starve him!) and finally, Lilo - she the feline version of Dug. Squirrel! Last year - In 2015 I did IM Boulder and loved every minute of training and the race. Last year I was in major IM blues. I felt lost because I wasn't training as much and I was in a rut. I did Boulder 70.3 and fell a few times in the run. In September I did a 70.3 that was dubbed the Highest Triathlon in the World at a starting elevation of 9,000 feet and climbed to 10,150 feet on the bike. On the bike I hit a bump and immediately my lower back had spasms. I finished the race but it was ugly and disappointing considering my training had gone so well. Current training - well, my coach was going to have me start a bike block but I'm sick again so he kept me on the same balanced of SBR. and a lot of core strength work. This year, 2017 - I'm back and I have a huge fire in my belly! 2016 race season is done and over with and 2017 is going to be great! Races: Oceanside 70.3 on April 1. Boulder 70.3 on Aug 5. I will probably do several swim/run races called Stroke and Stride (as my friend and I call them, Stroke and Die!) I would love to do a relay for the Boulder Peak Oly.on July 9 (I think) I may throw in a few half marathons between Oceanside and Boulder. Goals - My main goal is to feel good again about a race. The entire race. Not just the swim, bike, or the run. But the ENTIRE race, even the transitions, hehe! At the end of the race I want to be able to say, "I gave it everything I had" regardless of my finish time. Which brings me to my second goal- I want to go under 6 hours on a 70.3. What makes me a good Manatee- Hmmm... I'm more of a lurker. I send a lot of mental hugs when I read posts but I don't always post. While I don't always post, I do learn from what everyone else has to say on the questions others ask. Not sure that makes me a good Manatee or a stalker of good Manatees. Once again, you decide, hehe! |

I distinctly remember that there were points for a windy bike or running in the rain. It is kind funny/stoopid....I am being lazy and not wanting to make up my own points system to keep myself motivated!!! LOL. Happy New Year all. We went to our traditional NYE movie. The weather here was awesome/awful. Big dump of snow all day. Roads were a bit hairy driving to the movie, not bad back. I shoveled 3x yesterday, I think we got about 5 inches. Unusual for around here! My snow pile is as high as the weeping birch branches hang down.... Anyway, at midnight walked down to our neighbors as he always sets off fireworks. Hang out for 10-15 min, then head in to bed. We aren't real big partiers! |
