Master 6834 Englewood, Florida | Subject: Manatee Mentors 2016 - Closed WELCOME to the Manatees. Some iteration of this group has been going on for over 10 seasons and I've lost track of what season we are in! We are all mentors and mentees, which sounds like manatees--hence our name. All experience levels and goals welcome. We have not-yet-triathletes, multiple-iron finishers, runners, bikers and swimming specialists. We are beginners, folks at the highest levels of endurance sport, and everyone in between. Our training philosophies, gear, locations, and methods are similarly varied. We are very committed to health and to each other. We are an extremely supportive and very active group, as Janyne likes to say, inactive Manatees make us sad. Please check in (even to admit you're procrastinating or overwhelmed) and be passionate. Keeping up your training log here on BT and opening it to other group members is mandatory. This helps us all connect through messages such as Inspires and PM's, which some of us do on a regular basis. (If you don't know how, we'll help you). We have members that have been here a while and really know how this site works. We are ready and willing to help guide you through the wealth of resources found on BT. We also use a variety of other tools, such as Strava and other Social Media sites to encourage and support one another. We believe the journey is the reward, and look forward to having you as a fellow traveler and a friend. AS ALWAYS, ALL FORMER MANATEES ARE WELCOME AT ANY TIME. TO JOIN, PLEASE REPLY TO THIS MESSAGE (include or later add bio ASAP). Bio: whatever you want from format below and/or whatever you want us to know. NAME: What you're actually called. 310 Raleigh, North Carolina | Subject: RE: Manatee Mentors 2016 Hi, I'm interested in joining if I can! NAME: Adam STORY: I'm a 41 year old college professor. I ran short-distance track in high school (hurdles and nothing over a 400), then nothing for a few years. In my mid-20s, I started hitting the gym consistently and still love strength training (though I am by no means a big guy). Last year, I was dating a woman that was very into triathlon and I was curious about it. I bought a bike in April and ran my first super-sprint in July and was hooked. I completed a couple of sprint tris last year and an Olympic (that was converted into a duathlon thanks to bad weather). FAMILY STATUS: Divorced with 2 kids (13 and 11). I have the kids with me half of the time, which can make consistent training schedules difficult. Fortunately, I have quite a bit of flexibility in my job which helps a lot. CURRENT TRAINING: In the off-season, I've been hitting the pool a couple of times per week and doing some rides on the trainer and some runs to maintain some of the base I built up last year. I plan to start properly training for tri in the next week or two. Ideally, I'd like to maintain a couple of strength sessions per week, but I worry about having enough recovery time. THIS YEAR'S RACES/EVENTS: I'm lucky to have lots of race options in central North Carolina. My primary focus is the Raleigh 70.3 held in early June. I've signed up for a sprint and Olympic before that and a few races for after that race as well, but my training will be focused on the 70.3 distance during the mentoring period. GOALS/OBJECTIVES/DESIRES: I'm hoping to get guidance and support from this group. As a newbie to the sport, I'm really interested in learning more and realize I could really benefit from a group like this one. There are some local tri clubs around, but they can be intimidating (e.g., group rides in the 22+ mph range for 60 miles). While I've done a lot of reading on my own and have found some good training plans, I'm really hoping for both support/encouragement and also a good resource for questions. I also just want to feel more connected to others that going through the same type of training as I will likely be doing most of it on my own. WHAT MAKES YOU A GOOD MANATEE: I have a positive outlook, tend to be really supportive of others, and will be very engaged with the group. I don't bring any expertise to the group, but will encourage others and will work hard in my own training. Looking forward to this group! |

Master 8248 Eugene, Oregon | Subject: RE: Manatee Mentors 2016 Hope to stay in the pod due to its awesome members. Can I be the SE Asia representative, now that Yanti has (pretty much) run off Down Under? NAME: Karen STORY: I'm currently an international teacher in Saigon, Vietnam (call Oregon home during school breaks) with a long-time running addiction. (I'm 46 and have been running since age 10.) After running at a fairly high level in HS (also some age group and HS swimming, not as high-level) and college (including a 2:43 marathon and 17:03 5K), pretty much quit competitive sports and serious training at age 21 to pursue my career and live overseas. Started "training" again shortly after turning 40. (Some people buy a fancy car for their midlife crisis; I started triathlon and bought a couple of secondhand bikes.) Since then have mainly done triathlons at sprint to HIM distances, both in Asia and the US. FAMILY STATUS: Single, well on way to becoming crazy cat lady. Fur children (cats) Xiaoxue in the US (adoptee from my China days), Smudgee and Tomoko in Saigon CURRENT TRAINING: I started working with a coach (online) in early November and she has been putting me through my paces! Lots of strength work on the trainer and in the weight room. Plus, of course, swim, bike, and run. (I had to make my log private as part of the agreement with my coach. Hope that doesn't disqualify me from the pod. If need be I could possibly just write total time/distance in there, without the gory details, and make it public.) THIS YEAR'S RACES/EVENTS: Two of the three Singapore Sprint Series races (Aquathlon in February and tri in April), IM Vietnam 70.3 in May, IM Calgary 70.3 in July (Has anyone done the latter?? Talked into it by Mom, who wanted an excuse for a road trip!) Not sure about anything else yet. GOALS/OBJECTIVES/DESIRES: Hmmm.... I just feel I am a better person when I do something that pushes my limits. Otherwise I tend to get bored and kind of depressed if there is no physical challenge. I enjoy training and racing a lot, even if I am not God's gift to running or triathlon. I used to think I had to justify it more than that. Now I don't. Competitively, have my training pay off with solid, quality performances in races, improve on the bike in particular (my perennial weakness), not get sick during taper! Qualifying for 70.3 AG worlds would be awesome but no idea if that's realistic! WHAT MAKES YOU A GOOD MANATEE: I like the mix of personalities and experience levels in the group; quite honestly this is probably the nicest bunch on BT! I will try when I can to contribute my "expertise" (well, experience, anyway) with running if people need advise. Plus I have screwed up a lot in training and racing, so I can give plenty of guidance on what not to do! And as SE Asia rep I am happy to provide travel advice, free housing, etc. to anyone visiting my neck of the woods (or Oregon during the summer). Edited by Hot Runner 2016-01-01 6:38 PM |

Royal(PITA) 14270 West Chester, Ohio | Subject: RE: Manatee Mentors 2016 I'm back. I will try to be more active on the posting--but sometimes this chatty group is so many pages ahead of where I left off that I can't follow the discussion...Guess I'm old--at lest that's what my kids say. Judi--almost 56......been doing triathlon for 8 years. I'm married with 2 college aged daughters who are referred to as Thing One and Miss Thing. Thing One graduates this spring and will be teaching soon...Miss Thing is in her second year of college with a double major in psychology and biology and a minor in neuro psychology. She wants to get era PhD--I sure hope she gets a job to support her education We have 2 cats, Mocha who is a tuxedo kitty and will move out with Thing One when she gets a teaching job.....and Snickers, a calico that Miss Thing thinks will move out with her. I mostly do sprint and olympic distance triathlons. Tried for a HIM a few years ago and it was a season of injuries/ illness that has me backing away from distance. I am trying to make friends with running again--I no longer hate it (after the marathon I did in 2013) but it still isn't my friend. I'm a lousy swimmer who pretty much hates swimming, but I love triathlon so I swim what I need to for doing short course races. Love my bike rides. Right now I'm focusing on rebuilding my run and loosely following the winter training plan for the bike. I'm working on consistency with the swim. I love doing strength training and have almost finished Beach Body Max 30. I think when I finish it next week I may repeat it to see if I can get more of the high impact moves in. I also have the PiYo series and its okay....I'm a gym rat at heart but the videos are easy to squeeze in on my lunch hour since I work from home. I don't post a lot....but I am an inspire hound. 2016 race plans: April 9 is the Ukrops Monument Avenue 10K which is a HUGE event in Richmond. I need costume ideas folks!! I have the Rev 3 Olympic Rev in Williamsburg in July with Mary. We're still working on Jaynyne to join us...Not sure what else, really depends on how my legs feel as I rebuild the run. I'm *hoping" to feel up to the fall half marathon. What makes me a good Manatee Mentor? I love encouraging/ and being encouraged in the inspires. If I know something valuable on the topics discussed I will pipe in, but usually I think a lot about what is going on.

16 Philly, Pennsylvania | Subject: RE: Manatee Mentors 2016 Hi I'm Kevin and i would like to join. Here is the cliff notes version about me. I'm married with no kids but one very spoiled pooch. I work at a university hospital. I swam and ran xc in high school. Currently, I am a yo-yo endurance "athlete" who has done running events (through marathon distance) for about 6 years now and did one sprint triathlon and one Olympic tri turned duathlon last year. By yo-yo I mean I will be very good with training for a couple of months then fall off the wagon. I typically do most of my training solo, so I am hoping having a virtual team will help. My goal race is a 70.3 this fall (ironman 70.3 AC) and I would really like to drop 20-30 lbs by then. Thanks and I look forward to working with everyone! |

NAME: Tom STORY: I am 38 just given up smoking and had not done much exercise in the last twenty years until last summer when I did a 10K run for charity, loved it but wanted a more varied outlook and had always wanted to do a triathlon so I started swimming again a few months back and have got myself a bike. I have no experience on doing triathlons but loving the training so far! FAMILY STATUS: Married for 7 years with two kids 3 and 5. CURRENT TRAINING: trying to train 6 to 8 times a week and just building up base levels so far. THIS YEAR'S RACES/EVENTS: I want to do three sprint triathlons this year in May, July and September and aim to get quicker at them as the year goes on and then next year go up to Olympic distance. GOALS/OBJECTIVES/DESIRES: Fit and healthy and have a lot of fun whilst doing it! WHAT MAKES YOU A GOOD MANATEE: What I lack in experience I will make up in enthusiasm and will always being there to give positivity! Karen, Lisa, Jen, Judi and Kirsten - Welcome back!!! I'll be getting my bio in as soon as I can (I think I have one on my work laptop), but it may take a while. I am less frequent in my checking in during the weekend, just due to the myriad of other things going on in life. I am really looking forward to a great Manatee group this year, this group has helped me so much in the past and I hope that we can do that for each other again this year. |

7 | Subject: RE: Manatee Mentors 2016 NAME: Dicky STORY: I'm 32, currently serving in the Royal Air Force as a communications technician. I played ice hockey with the RAF for several years as a netminder before getting a knee injury and after 18 months of rehab I was told I was better off finding another sport which is where I was talked into trying triathlon. I am terrible at swimming so got a swim coach and last month managed to swim 400m FS for the first time which was brilliant. I've currently completed 4 sprint tri's last year and have booked an olympic distance triathlon in August. FAMILY STATUS: I've been married for three years to Nikki, we have two french bulldogs called Jean-Pierre and Phoebe and are currently going through IVF to have our first child. CURRENT TRAINING: If/how you have been training so far So I booked a 10/40/5 duathlon for the end of Jan to get me out and training over the xmas period. I've updated my Strava into my training log. I am in the process of speaking with the swim coach and then I will sort out a proper programme. THIS YEAR'S RACES/EVENTS: I have a 10/40/5km duathlon booked in Jan, then 4 x 10ks booked through the year, I might squeeze in a HM and will compete in the RAF Try-a-Tri series of 5 races throughout the year. I am working towards an Oly Tri in August in London. GOALS/OBJECTIVES/DESIRES: Friendships to keep me motivated when I'm struggling and honestly sometimes I just need someone to chat to about something I seem to becoming rather passionate about. WHAT MAKES YOU A GOOD MANATEE: Whilst I might not be a brilliant athlete, I love social media and teamwork. In a sport that is quite singular in its approach I believe my previous ice hockey experience makes me a good team player and motivator. |

Veteran 1900 Southampton, Ontario | Subject: RE: Manatee Mentors 2016 Okay, Im in (if you will have me) NAME: Dave STORY: I started running in the fall of 2011 at a Dr's suggestion and had biked on and off for years so it only made sense to throw in swimming and become a triathlete. I did the Muskoka 70.3 in 2012 but started to gravitate towards offroad events in the past few years. I actually sold my tribike last year to fund a new mountain bike but do have a road bike so road tris are not out of the questions. I also have too many hobbies, offroad motorcycling, snowboarding and whitewater kayaking but I do my best to stay on top of the training. FAMILY STATUS: Married 15 years with 2 kids, 13 and 10. CURRENT TRAINING: Heavy bike focus right now. I dropped my motorcycle on my big toe just before Christmas and flexing it still hurts. Cycling is okay but running is out of the question. I need to get back to the pool (as always!) THIS YEAR'S RACES/EVENTS: Paris to Ancaster offroad bike race (70km) Xterra Canadian Championships, Xterra ParrySound and possibly Xterra Quebec or a Xterra event in the NE USA. GOALS/OBJECTIVES/DESIRES: Work on not only putting in the hours but making them productive. WHAT MAKES YOU A GOOD MANATEE: I would describe myself as half way between casual and competitive so have a lot to learn but I also try to help where I feel I can. Veteran 2441 Western Australia | Subject: RE: Manatee Mentors 2016 I'm back in if you will have me. NAME: Stacey STORY: 40 year old accountant from Australia. So I sit on my butt most of the day. I used to play a lot of sport as a kid and stopped when I got married and was working and studying full time. Started doing tris about 4 years ago at my brothers suggestion because I could fit training and racing around my long work hours more easily than team sports. I am very spasmodic with my training and have also been struggling this year with a reoccurring back issue. I am slow as in back of the back of the pack slow. FAMILY STATUS: Married to Phil. We have no children but we breed Mastiffs, we have more than I care to acknowledge to people. Yes I am a crazy dog lady. CURRENT TRAINING: Very spasmodic. I love to plan my training but am not great at the execution. THIS YEAR'S RACES/EVENTS: I have a sprint in a couple of weeks and an Oly at the end of Jan, then 2 more tris before the end of April and a HM at the end of May. GOALS/OBJECTIVES/DESIRES: I want to break 1:45 for a sprint this summer and 2:30 for the HM, (if we have puppies in March then this goal might get delayed until August). I also have a friend that has her heart set on us doing the Disney Dopey Challenge in 2018. She has never been active in her life and is obese so I am doing everything I can to encourage her in this. I also want to lose around 10kg (20#) and rebuild my core muscles in the hope of combatting my re-occurring back issue. WHAT MAKES YOU A GOOD MANATEE: To be honest not much. I sleep while you guys are awake so I'm always behind on the conversation and I race during your off season. I also don't have a lot of skills or knowledge to be able to help answer questions. But I can promise to post cute dog pictures reasonably regularly if you will have me back again. Edited by StaceyK 2016-01-02 5:05 PM |

FAMILY STATUS: Married to Hannah for 8.5 years with two nippers, Emmylou 7.5 going on 18 and Finley 5 probably not going to reach his 10 th birthday the way he's going. 1 dog, Lucy. CURRENT TRAINING: Heavy bike focus right now. Upcoming events will explain why. THIS YEAR'S RACES/EVENTS: have signed myself and my wife up for a 10 km run in June, her 1st. On the 30th of July I will be racing in the 4th Transcontinental Race. Details and a blog can be found at www.longtimegone.blog.com GOALS/OBJECTIVES/DESIRES: Hmmm mm ? Expert 1360 | Subject: RE: Manatee Mentors 2016 Can I join? I've been around BT for a while (6 years?) but never really got into the mentor threads, with the main forum crashing and burning lately (just mean the lack of posters for the last 2 or so years), it would be nice to have some contact with other like minded folks. NAME: Laura STORY: I'm 35 years old and I have been doing triathlons for almost half my life now . I did my first triathlon back in the summer of 2001. I had run cross country (not very well) in high school and was a decent high school swimmer (my parents wouldn't put be into competitive swimming before then). When I started university, a friend who did tris and she suggested that I try one seeing as I was already swimming and running. I didn't really think much of it until I saw the Olympics in 2000 where Simon Whitfield (I'm Canadian) won the first gold medal in triathlon and I decided I would do one the next summer. The next summer I did a long sprint and I've been hooked ever since. I have done at least one tri almost every year since then (not 2004, 2008 or 2013). I've done everything from try-a-tris (after ACL reconstruction from an old rugby injury) and in 2014 (10 month old at home while trying to sell our house) up to several half ironmans and 2 ironmans (Florida in 2010 and Wisconsin in 2012). FAMILY STATUS: Married with one little boy who is the light of my life - 2.5ish years old, a dog (a 10 year old Golden Retriever who thinks he is going on 2) and a cat. I would like to have another child, but so far haven't been able to convince my husband that it is a good idea. CURRENT TRAINING: mostly still trying to figure out how to fit in training with a child - I try to run 3 days a week, bike 2 days a week and swim one day a week (will be trying to bump up to 2 days in the winter. Finding it challenging to get it all in as my husband leaves for work very early in in the morning 3 days a week which means that I miss my early morning swim time. THIS YEAR'S RACES/EVENTS: I think I will plan for a spring half marathon - maybe Forest City Road Races in London ontario, and then an Olympic tri in June. we will see from there. GOALS/OBJECTIVES/DESIRES: get back into regular triathlon training and join a group of people to discuss training with. None of my real world friends do triathlons (I have a number of acquaintances that do, but no real friends. WHAT MAKES YOU A GOOD MANATEE: I've been at this a long time. I know what there is to know about training for all different race distances. I'm slow, but I know my stuff. I've been around BT for a while so I have a pretty good understanding of how the site works. |

50 Munich, Bayern | Subject: RE: Manatee Mentors 2016 I would like to join, I hope I can. :-) NAME: Mark (31) STORY: I used to do some Karate (Shito-Ryu+Wado-Ryu) when I was a kid, one of the older guys said that he run a 5km track the other day and was still full with energy so he ran it again. In my mind running 10km was kinda impossible so I started training with 1k, 2k, 5k etc. I kinda stopped when I hit the 7k mark and started to ride my bike to work. 2 years ago although I was riding 60km or more per week I realised that I miss running so I picked it up again and started doing 7-8-9km every run. Last year I managed to run 72km and ride 54km on a couple of weeks (these were my training weeks before a Half-Marathon). I got injured of course, my old ITB syndrome came out, I went to the Doc, but he couldn't really help. I realised that I need the workout not the running in itself, so I bought some weights and started "lifting" and I was going once a month to my local swimming pool. When I told a friend what I was doing he jokingly said I should run an Ironman. I liked the idea so I started researching and found this forum. :-) FAMILY STATUS: Single, never married, no children. :-) CURRENT TRAINING: Running: 3-4 times a week 9km, rest for a while and 9km back (making it 18km total) Cycling: 3-4 times a week 9km, rest for a while and 9km back, I occasionally make a "long ride" of 60+ km. I tried a few 100 km rides but my butt hurts after 70, so I try to plan my distances a little bit shorter. :-D Last years races: 3 Half-Marathons (1:42, 1:39, 1:37) THIS YEAR'S RACES/EVENTS: 3 Half Marathons, 1 Marathon and one Sprint Triathlon (but I am kinda afraid of the swimming part). GOALS/OBJECTIVES/DESIRES: To workout and have some fun without injuries. Maybe learn a little bit more about nutrition because I kinda loose weight really fast if I am not paying attention. WHAT MAKES YOU A GOOD MANATEE: I am friendly, supportive, helpful, active, passionate and I know what I want. I hope to have a really nice time here and learn a couple of things. :-) Edited by Lighttower 2016-01-03 6:17 AM |

Expert 2811 | Subject: RE: Manatee Mentors 2016 I would like to join your group. NAME: Jim STORY: I was a runner when I was younger, but never ran a race until I was 40. I ran (at first) because the Coast Guard made me, but then there was a metamorphosis and I ran because I liked to run. It removed stress and I just felt better when I ran. Then came marriage and children and a 15 year hiatus from all things exercise. When I turned 39 I had one of those physicals. I was 30 pounds overweight, my blood pressure was high and everything that was supposed to be low was high and everything that was supposed to be higher was low. Finally, I asked the nurse was there anything that wasn't bad and she responded your cholesterol it's 199 I asked what's bad she said 200. I decided I had to do something, first was a diet overhaul. I like food, so I knew a deprivation diet would not work. I developed the "don't eat like a pig diet" ie don't eat half of a pizza, eat a slice and a salad. I also started walking which graduated into running. I needed more to keep motivated. I tried the local softball league, but discovered that was just an excuse to get together on Thursdays and drink beer. One Saturday morning we were driving through town and we were stopped to allow the athletes from the local triathlon cross the road. As we watched them transition from swim to run I turned to my wife and said," I'm going to do that next year." She said "ok, but it looks hard." Then I turned to her and asked "will you teach me to swim" and she responded with "sure" ( the Coast Guard teaches you to swim for your life not swim a stroke), My wife was a competitive swimmer in high school. I found out the distances for a sprint, and started training. I ran my first 5k race two months later and first triathlon the next year at age 41. FAMILY STATUS: I am married (22 years) and I have 4 children (3 girls and a boy) a Junior and Freshman at Michigan State and a Junior and Freshman in high school. The 3 youngest have competed in triathlons with me, my oldest does not understand why you would run without a ball. CURRENT TRAINING: I have maintained a good base of 6-7 hours per week year round which increases over the summer as I would build up to a September HIM. I started and will now restart to BT beginner Ironman plan, The holidays and family vacation derailed things. THIS YEAR'S RACES/EVENTS: IM Louisville my first Ironman. Sunrise Side HIM, Boyne Lucky 7 Sprint. Black Bear Grand Fondo, various 5 and 10 k races and a Marathon to be named later. GOALS/OBJECTIVES/DESIRES:Complete IM Louisville, and lose the 10 lbs I collected this fall. WHAT MAKES YOU A GOOD MANATEE: I love being a part of an active mentor group. I have been in a group for the past 6 years started in Ernesto's group then that morphed into "Consistency Equals Success." I have found that an active group helps my training and keeps me focused. I have learned a lot being involved in mentor groups and know that there is a lot I can still learn. I really like the "team/collaborative" philosophy you have, and I really need a group that is active and involved. The bottom line is that it works for me when I am involved in an active mentor group and my motivation/training has suffered when I wasn't. I have also made some terrific friends through the mentor groups and I have been able to race with a few of them. Edited by JBacarella 2016-01-03 12:18 PM |
