Subject: Animal advice

My neighbor found a cat with a collar huddled up in her garden. After a couple of days, it was pretty clear it was lost and scared, possibly injured. We are in a very urban area, so I tried putting up signs, calling the shelters, posting on Craigslist, etc. In the meantime the plan was to find a no-kill shelter and I offered to take the cat there. That's when the fun really began. Sunday they were close, Monday was MLK day so they were also closed, Tuesday morning she brings the cat over, but then it starts snowing and the whole city shuts down. Now I've got this cat living in my sons bathroom, and he's named it and we are both in and out of there checking on her. Worse, she's eating and drinking and getting more active, and is very, very friendly and purrs like a motor boat. Oh, and no response to the lost cat posts.

I have two cats. Three is one over the limit. It's not bikes. Plus she needs to be checked for FIV/FELV, get shots, etc. and I have no idea how she will get along with mine. I cannot allow her to go to a shelter where she might be put down. So I guess the plan is to pay to get her shots and tests, and then try and adopt her out. Anyone have suggestions here on how best to do that? Feel free to tell me I'm crazy, because right now I think you may be right.

Have you posted on FaceBook? Maybe someone might want to adopt or know of a shelter or recognize the kitty?

Also our Vet will sometimes take in strays until they can be placed. You might ask there.

Tried all that. There are so many stray animals in Philly that the shelters and vets are forced to take a hard line. My vet can't/won't help.

Is there a local private cat rescue (Google it)? If so, they might be willing to take the cat in, vet it, and place it in a foster home until a permanent home can be found. That's what we did for the poor stray kitty that showed up on our doorstep last spring (little one-eye). He's now in a fantastic home and doing great.

My parents have been finding mice in the house since our cat died a year ago... do you deliver?

Actually, I'm pretty sure they don't want a cat, because they're getting my dog for the second half of 2014... but they'll be disappointed. I'm sure he's a terrible mouser.

I'm happy to share on FB to see if anyone I know in the area is looking.

There are a couple, but they are focused on the feral cat problem in Philly and do trap and release. The private shelters that place in homes do intake from animal control. There are zero no-kill shelters that accept walk-ins.

No, that's can't possibly be true. I'm more worried that my dad and my ex both called this morning to ask how "Mollie" was doing.

Maybe people don't do it to cats often, but take it in to see if it's micro chipped?

Also, if you can't keep it, get rid of it sooner than later.  Your not THAT attached to the cat after a couple days/weeks.  Just like the "newness" of it.  You won't miss it after a day or two if you get rid of it soon.  After months?  It could be a different story.

How do the other cats take to it.  They usually HATE interlopers and can take months to get used to it.

Second this notion. If it is chipped (and the owner registered the chip) it should be able to provide contact information.

First thing I did was take it to my vet to see if it was chipped. No luck. As I don't know this cat's immunization history or FIV/FELV status, I won't let it mingle with mine. Although they know it's here, they've seen it and they know it's in the bathroom. They just don't seem that interested.

Did I mention the facts that it's polydactyl and has the longest tail I've ever seen?

Will your vet at least let you put up an ad on their bulletin board?  Or send out an email to their clients?

Thank you for not just letting it starve/freeze outside.

If you go for the CL option I have been told it goes better if you charge an adoption fee. Doesn't make much sense, but apparently it keeps the lookie lous from wasting your time. My sister tried to adopt her dog out on CL without a fee and had lots of her time wasted over the next few weeks. Lots of bored people just looking for something to do with no intention of actually adopting a dog.

Put up some posters at work and at the vet.  One of my stupider pts brought a kitten to my office (Because when you find a stray kitten you should bring it to your orthopedic surgeons office right?)  He said it was a stray he found and if we didn't take it he was going to release it into the parking lot at walmart......ARGH.  We kept it in the office and put up some pictures and got it adopted in a few days.

I would not do Craigs list.  Too many psychos looking for animals to murder or torture or use as bait

It's one of the superpower special Ernest Hemingway cats!

Between those facts, your mentioning them, the kid naming her, and relatives already asking ... sorry. I think she's yours. Regardless, bless you bless you bless you for taking her in for this time.

I read this entire thread and found what the problem is. Your original premise that two is the proper number of cats must be incorrect. Adjusting parameters until three becomes the proper number of cats solves all your problems. Get her shots and make sure she doesn't have cooties/FIV/FELV and enjoy.

Stupider?  Sounds to me like the guy was brilliant.  He got rid of the cat and saved himself a trip to walmart.

Yes...you should always keep from naming things unless you're going to keep it!! :-)

We have 4 animals...it's a nice round number :-)

Again, you're awesome for taking in the kitty...but I do understand if you just can't house another cat. Cats in the long run aren't all THAT expensive, but initially it could be a bit pricey to make sure she is OK.

I found a cat once and just took it to the local humane society. Not sure if it was a no-kill shelter, but I didn't see her/him/it a few weeks later when I looked through cat pictures. Have you called them to at least describe the pet so they can have records if someone calls?

There really is no great solution, it seems...but I just wanted to say that it was very nice of you to bring the kitty in from the cold. Why is it that good deeds can sometimes be a huge pain?!!?

It's named and been in the house more than a couple days. You have a new cat. Go get the shots.

First step would be a vet visit, worming, flea treatment, FELV test, check for anything else minor but contagious. (Believe it or not, mine came back from the sitter with pink-eye!) If she's positive for feline leukemia, might be better just to put her down. Heartless, but true--you don't want to make your cats sick, and it makes her much less adoptable in what sounds already like a tough market. I'm a real cat-lover but having lost one (stray in US from my college days) to the disease, I just can't/don't want to go through that again or pass the problem on to other people/pets. It's a horrible way to go.

If not and she's cleaned up, at least that buys you time to keep advertising, looking for a no kill shelter, etc. If you sink more $ into her (shots, fixing), I'd charge an adoption fee if you do find someone to adopt her. Otherwise, she's yours. It's not inevitable....I haven't adopted ALL the cats I've named, only most of them!

Congrats on the new Cat! Just think of all the enjoyment you will have watching them all run and chase around the house. Oh right cats, they just sit and lay where you are working, forget the run and chase part. Just think of all the extra prospecting in the litterbox you get to do now or perhaps you bet a bonus prospecting site now.

Oh yeah. You also just lost at least 4 square feet of bed space.

I just want to say I know what the problem is. I hate people but love animals. This applies you every one of you, my off-line friends, kids, and especially my ex who undermined my authority by naming her Mollie and getting everyone to FT me several times a day to check up on her.

Mollie will be going to the shelter tomorrow to take advantage of low-cost veterinary services. If she is FIV/FELV negative, she will be getting a checkup and shots, and staying in my home until we find her someone who will care for her forever. Really, I'm serious.

She is clever. She made a little nest for herself in the cabinet under the sink, and has figured out how to open the linen closet where I'm keeping her food.
