Subject: 2009 vs 2008 numbers

The June numbers thread had me looking at my numbers and I'm doing pretty good this year.

We are half way through 2009.  How do your numbers stack up against 2008?

Swim:  77.25% of my 2008 total
Bike :   76.94% of my 2008 total
Run :    47.63% of my 2008 total

In 2008 my IM was in April then I kind of backed off.  2009 I've done 3 HIM and have two IM planned for the second half of the year so no slacking off until late November.  The run is my strength so I have been doing a good job of training my weakness.

Well, if I did the math right..

Bike 55% of 2008 total
Run 42% of 2008 total
Swim 55% of 2008 total

Makes sense as I had the Boston Marathon in April of last year, so I had more run mileage and was racing 70.3. Now this is an IM year and my colume is up 5% swim/bike and will continue to grow over last year as I head towards Nov IMAZ. and the volume really picks up.

Run :    54% of my 2008 total

My swim is way over already because I had a shoulder injury last year and didn't swim much.  I've concentrated more on the bike for the first half of the year and will concentrate more on the run the second half.  My goal is to be 20% above last year's mileage on the bike and run which I think is still in the cards.

Interesting to compare even more so training for similar distance races in '08 and '09 with main races being IM July last year and August this year. I've been working on my weaknesses swim/run and my numbers show it. I miss my bike

S: 79.7% of my 2008 total in 6 months
B: 45.1% of my 2008 total in 6 months
R: 69.2% of my 2008 total in 6 months

Swim: 116.5% of my 2008 total - ignored the swim mostly the last few years. Finding improvements with just swimming a bit more!
Bike : 70.3% of my 2008 total - first day on my bike this year was Feb 14th. 2 more months and I will be over 2008 #s
Run : 48.6% of my 2008 total - I typically run more in the fall/early winter, so this number is not a suprise.

I like using %'s! Makes my (relatively small) volume look great =)

Swim 134%
Bike 68%
Run 147%

Last year I trained from Jan-August. This year I made a big push early on to improve my running, now I'm trying to focus on the bike... Swimming has been more consistent, too.

Swim = 59.1%  **Makes sense...I didn't have a pool for 2+ months of 2008...but I WAS training for a 10k in 2008 and I am not this year...so, TLAR.
Bike =  45.4%  **Also make sense since this year I am only doing Oly's and last year I did an IM.  I am ahead of last year's pace though...by this time last year I had not ridden as far because I wasn't riding much in the Middle East.
Run = 133.3%  **Last year I was coming off knee surgery and really did NO significant running until May or June.  Also makes sense.

Interesting.

Considering I only swam 3x in the first 3 months of the year, that doesn't seem too bad.  Run was probably ahead of last year until I started swimming more--fallen off a bit, but hope to keep it near last year's levels overall.  Obviously, I've made one item a bit more of a focus this year--reasonable chance I exceed '09 by the end of July.

Amazing what training for a first IM will do for your volume...

(Well, that and finally committing to two swims a week, instead of just one.)

Swim: sucks (shoulder problem early in the year, slack training)
Bike: sucks (always takes the biggest hit when life gets in the way)
Run: sucks (not really, but it should be higher)

So basically I'm well below where I should be.  But that has been my choice with the other priorities in life, so no big deal.

Last year was first year of triathlon and my max distance races were 1 marathon (early) and 2 HIMs.  This year I'm IM training and used the first part of the year as base training for IMFL. A stress fracture kept me from running for about 7 weeks or run % would be higher.  I'll hit the bike and swim distances from 2008 by the end of August, I bet. The run may end up being even come the end of the end of the year.

I am 21 hours and 307 miles behind my 2008 pace for the bike at the half way point.

I am 11 hours and 63 miles behind my run pace.

I am 3 hours and 12,000  yards behind my swim pace.

But what does that mean?  Absolutely nothing.  I had different goals in 2008 than 2009...  2008 was an IM year, this year is not.

SAD BUT TRUE.... First half of last year I did nothing but keep my body moving

First 6 months of 2008 bike =352 miles Run=219 and swim=10100 much better second half!

Fist 6 months of 2009 bike=2465 run=647 and swim=189667

I believe that's roughly

bike 700%
Run 295%
Swim HUGE %

IM year really kicks up the numbers!
