Melon Presser 52116 | Subject: RE: Manatee Mentors 2016 - Closed Originally posted by marysia83 THANK YOU thank you thank you! Yea, I already passed with the 2-hours goal. Even if I was training the way I was supposed to, it's still my first race and it's hard to pace if you have no idea how it feels. I think the whole idea of running half marathon - training, sacrifice, acceptance of a challenge, devoting the time and resources - this is already a lot, and no matter what time it will take for me to finish - I should be proud with what I achieve with a training. I think competing with my brother (which is silly...) made me forget about it for a moment. Oh well, I can always say I do triathlons (in your face, bro!) Thanks for your support. I do not want to resign from this race (especially since they are giving delicious beer and pizza post race!!!), but I want to make sure the training will make sense time-wise. You've already gotten lots of good advice, and I wish you all the best! Couple of additional thoughts: 1) generally it's wiser to walk more often earlier on (and training this way helps you race this way if you're going to do it). In other words, it's better to do 10min run - 1 min walk than 20min run - 2 min walk (for example). If you're still feeling super awesome at mile 7-8, then you can go for it/go faster/do full run/whatever. 2) the athletic yoga will not prevent injuries. Only proper run training can do that. Unless you have significant medically-identified problems and are doing specific things in the athletic yoga recommended for them. However, for someone in your position, the yoga or other good types of conditioning is a very good idea for overall physical structural strength, which in turn is likely to improve your ability to run (but not prevent injuries or improve performance). |

310 Raleigh, North Carolina | Subject: RE: Manatee Mentors 2016 - Closed So I just started watching Twin Peaks based on a group consensus recommendation. I missed this show the first time around, so it's new to me. I'm about a three episodes in but some initial thoughts: 1. I miss the slower speed of shows from that period. Modern shows tend to cut immediately to the action whereas this one takes time to let situations unfold. 2. The dream sequence with the Man from Another Place (from the 3rd episode) has to be one of the most bizarre things to ever be on network TV. 3. The background music on that show does an enormous amount to set the tone and mood of the show. 4. The bright green font on the opening credits has not aged well. The downside is that it's confusing enough that I was looking at some online recaps to try to learn who the characters are. Then, with no spoiler alert at all, one of the sites named the characters and included a parenthetical comment that says "(who is later shown to be Laura Palmer's killer)". Argh! I'll still watch as I'm sure there are lots of interesting twists and turns, but could have done without the spoiler. Guess it serves me right for snooping around online (and it's not like the show just came out). Thanks for the recommendation Manatees! |

If he sees a Primanti Brother's shop, he could stop and try the sammiches that originated among the working class in Pittsburgh, but they've decided to expand some shops toward the middle and eastern part of PA, too. If he's looking for cheesesteaks in Philly, the two most well-known spots are Pat's or Geno's (across the street from each other, no less), but I've also heard George's Sandwiches or John's roast pork are strong contenders. If he gets near the Lancaster area, PA Dutch cooking is found there, even if it's only in the form of a quick stop to check out the awesome baked goods the Amish make. In Maryland, yeah, he needs to find a good crabcake sammich, and there are many to be found. We once went on a 'tour of crabcakes', trying them at a few different places in one day. Can I just say that all this talk of food in this thread today has me seriously craving the chicken and waffles from Beasley's Chicken and Honey in Raleigh? Went there for a couple days last March for a conference and it was delicious. Also: Cheerwine! Cherry soda that may very well be the nectar of the gods. That same conference is in Raleigh next week, and I'm really sad that other people are going this year. |

50 Munich, Bayern | Subject: RE: Manatee Mentors 2016 - Closed Hello Everyone! Just a quick update: I am back from my holiday, I hope everyone is well, the disabled are healing nicely, the racers had a good time and everyone else is enjoying themselves. I managed to go for a run almost every day (12.2k each time), but my Garmin was having some issues, I am not sure why, it fixed itself after a couple of days, so I guess it was some kind of GPS problem, it works fine now so I am ok with that. I had some really serious stress at work the last couple of months, but most of the problems managed to solve themselves right before my holiday, so I managed to relax and enjoy my stay. I feel like a completely new man now. I did not read any emails, watch the news or anything, complete isolation from everything work or stress related. I can't tell you how relaxing that can be. (Although I asked a friend to upload my strava times and I tried to keep an eye on this thread). I think having a carefree time had some effect on my running performance, I usually run with an overall speed of 5:30/km (8:50/mile) on a hilly trail, but I managed to do an overall pace of 4:20/km (7min/mile) now in training (it was on a flat track high quality road, there were a lot of other runners and I could follow a few very fast ones). I would like to run sub 5min/km on my HMs again like last year, so I am happy that I still have the speed in me. ) I still need to read through the posts here and inspire some people, so my apologies for being absent. I hope you don't mind if I do all of this tomorrow, it is already midnight here. |

Veteran 2441 Western Australia | Subject: RE: Manatee Mentors 2016 - Closed Glad that you enjoyed your holiday Mark. And if everyone can stop discussing food that would be great However got to work today and we have staff worship everyday. Today when we finished one of the ladies goes "Oh by the way there are warm scones in the oven that I just finished cooking so help yourself". 9:00am isn't too early for scones and jam and cream with a cup of tea is it? Too bad cause they were warm and fluffy and beautiful. My Timex Ironman watch died last week and I am now facing a dilemma - what to replace it with? I have a Garmin F10 which is simple and I love it for running but it isn't water proof so I cant use it for swimming or tris. I don't want anything real fancy, just something that I can hit start at the beginning of swimming or races and then hit a lap button at the start of T1 and the Bike and T2 and the run. I don't care too much about heart rate and GPS is good but not essential. The new Garmin Vivoactive HR has caught my attention. Its probably got more fruit on it than I am looking for but it also seems to cover all of the basics (not sure I really like the Australian price tag though). If any of you have looked at this I would love to hear your thoughts. https://buy.garmin.com/en-AU/AU/wearabletech/watches-wearable-techno... dcrainmaker doesn't have a full review of it yet so I will definitely wait for that. In the mean time I will keep squinting and trying to read the pace clock and the normal wall clock at the pool. (edit the Vivoactive HR isn't due for release until around April some time so I have some time to think about this.) Edited by StaceyK 2016-03-03 9:09 PM |

(edit the Vivoactive HR isn't due for release until around April some time so I have some time to think about this.) I have the vivoactive and like it, but it is not a dedicated triathlon watch. In other words, you can't just hit a lap button and switch to T1 or the bike etc. It does have swim, bike, run functions, but not transition function and no way to link the individual disciplines. Also, the swim function is only good for the pool, not ows. I may be wrong, but think the vivoactive with HR is just going to add an optical HR function and will not change any of these issues. So, if you want a watch like you describe, I'd look at something else. Maybe the 310xt? That is a great watch and since it is a few watches old, you may be able to get good deals on it. |

I hate it, but when it dies last year they replaced it with a new one for $125.00. It created some inner turmoil, but the cheapskate inside of me won and I got another Timex. Like Jim, I am a bit tight on the wallet when buying gear. I did recently go from the Timex GPS (my second one) to a Garmin 310xt . The reason for me was the amount of work that it took to get Timex into the tracking platforms I use (TP, Strava, BT). There was an option to go with ANOTHER third party to do the file dance for me, but just as I was about to do so, the second one I had died. Which kind of sealed the deal, since another replacement seemed rediculous to me. The next time I do this, I'll probably take a longer look at those other companies like Suunto, Polar or TomTom. The Ambit series from Suunto has reviewed pretty well although it seems like the 920 series from Garmin is currently the leader for most folks. But, with that comes a price tag. Another option I had thought about was 3 seperate devices, but that goes against your desire to hit a button in transition and go from one activity to the next. So, for a simple Multisport watch that meets a price/function ratio, one that you are going to use in everyday training and racing scenarios, I would probably stick to the offerings from Garmin, possibly a refurbished or discontinued model. You should get a good(enough?) life span from it and when it dies, you may not feel as bad about replacement costs. Or, wait a bit and see what else comes out for the spring, although generally speaking new=$$$. Also, this might help: http://www.dcrainmaker.com/product-comparison-calculator

I wanted to say exactly this! ^^^ I love my vivoactive, but it isn't a good watch for racing and has zero functionality for OWS. |

Master 2429 Falls Church, Virginia | Subject: RE: Manatee Mentors 2016 - Closed Originally posted by IronOx POL post. Work has been crazy, hopefully will settle down now as second year students go out on practicums. But then I had a site back out last minute so have to find four new placements by Monday so we'll see about that. Also dealing with some depression/SAD/mid-life crisis BS. Could be partly hormonal as it seems very cyclical. Which I am too young for dammit!! Whatever it is, it is putting a strain on my relationship (from my side, SO is being very understanding). We have a weekend away booked so hopefully that will be helpful to everything! Go racey racers and heal up DLers. Has anyone heard from/about Steve? (((HUGS))) |
