oh good - I'm interested too. I take in about 230/hour of infinit on the bike and similar on the run. I was thinking about switching to shot bloks this year for the run. I need to pick some up for testing - but I would MUCH rather a blok than a gel.
I do bloks on the bike but not on the run. I'd rather do bloks the whole time but I'm generally working harder on the run and I find it hard to chew/breath/swallow. Sucking down a gel is way easier.

Same here.  Bloks + running = walking.

Another tip on the gels. I like to have them in a pocket in my suit so they're up against my warm body. When they're warm the viscosity is much lower and goes down way easier without getting stuck in your mouth. If you don't have pockets like that just hold it in your hand for a half mile to a mile before eating.

What type of gels were you using? There can be a big difference in them. I had some very soft ones already and never needed to warm up. Tended to be fine even when it was colder out. Warming tended to make it a bit harder for me.

Just realized I made it sound like I eat the whole bar at once--I don't. The bars break into little squares (I think 16) and I eat them at 20-30 minute increments in "doses" of 2-3 squares a time. It works for me, but definitely anyone interested in the chocolate approach should experiment a lot in training first!

It kind of happened by accident--I was heading out for a long ride early last year and somehow was out of all gu except for some that was 5 or 6 years old, and didn't know if that was safe. I happened to have a dark chocolate bar in my fridge (a few squares is my favorite dessert) and ended up shoving that into the bento box instead. Unlike the usual long ride where I was struggling to get down each gu, particularly as I hit the third or fourth hour, I really enjoyed my "nutrition", it provided a steady supply of energy, and my stomach was fine for the brick run after as well. Gu and other sports nutrition products are only sporadically available in Vietnam, while quality dark chocolate, both imported and domestic (Vietnam has some outstanding single-origin chocolates from the Central Highlands) is easily had, so it saves me having to haul in a lot of extra gu or other sports nutrition products for long rides and races. I mainly use gu for long runs (over 90 minutes) and the run leg of longer races.

Regarding on bike nutrition:

I answered the question as if I were doing a race.  In corresponding with Robin via Inspire, though, I realized that there may be two questions here.

  1. What do you do on the bike for a race?
  2. What do you do on the bike for group rides?

For me, personally, I do completely different things if I am on a 100k shop ride with friends versus if I am racing.  For a shop ride, I have breakfast, ride to the shop, have two fig newtons (100 cals or so) 60-75 minutes into the ride and have a Clif bar when the group stops at a gas station convenience store.  I have Nuun or Camelbak Elixer in one bottle and water in the other.  I get additional water at the C Store.  So for a  3-ish hour shop ride, I have ~350 calories versus in an IM, I'll have 290 and hour.  Big difference.

Go Racers. I wish I were in Englewood racing with Chris. I hope the water quality is okay there.

I still cannot imagine an ultra race of any kind. Wow!

Happy Birthday Darren. Hopefully that will be my first grandkids birthday, too.

Sean's comment IMMEDIATELY made me think of this scene. (picture below)

at an oly distance I typically go with weakly mixed gatorade and a gel on the bike and one for the run. In training I only think about food nutrition on 3+hr efforts - normally its just fluids.

PSA:  in honor of national ice cream day -which is Sunday, today UBER will deliver magnum ice cream bars to you for free.  I'm not 100% sure if the free is for both the delivery and the ice cream or just the delivery, but there is ice cream at the end!  I may order some when I swing by my house at lunch time!!

Thanks for the encouragement about being ready to tackle the Oly....no backing out now. I just signed up for the Reston Tri in September. The hills on the bike will be tough, but the run course is shaded.
I also registered for HarborFest 1.2 mile OWS!
I'm holding off on choosing my running race for the fall. I was thinking I'd do another 5k and try to get faster, but I'm thinking it makes more sense to wait and make sure I stay injury free. Besides, its usually pretty easy to find a 5k in November/December around here.
Thanks all for the support!

Except when they froze in my pocket during a winter race, they always have the consistency of snot.

As far as gels go I like Honey Stinger. They are the consistency of honey when warm and don't get as paste-y as the others when cold. I like their chews for the same reason.

I'm testing Infinit's jet fuel on my long run tomorrow

The running aspect of an Ironman triathlon is a marathon. Most people take on a marathon as a single event and the training for this uses up a lot of their time. Here are some tips for the run.

Find a mentor. Make a list of at least three people that you could approach for help, list your specific needs and then be courageous enough to begin asking.
