Pre-race routine:

Got down to Raleigh about 7pm on Friday and went right to the Krispy Kreme Store to get checked in. This is a large donut shop. Had 4 beers and a couple of rum and cokes the night before. Got up, didn't eat breakfast. Drove to NC State campus and hung out at the race site. Met up with weds19 and konichiwa. Chatted and hung around with all of the college kids.
Event warmup:

None, besides wondering wtf I was about to do.

Comments:

The first run was easy, just cruised at about 7 minute miles or so to the store It was really crowded with 3000 participants so there was lots of weaving through traffic, which I find annoying and fun at the same time. Get to the KK and find a box of donuts out of the 3000 boxes that they have stacked up in the parking lot. Found a spot to eat and Konichiwa found me a few minutes later (I think he was getting water), but I decided that staying where I was at the moment was fine as I realized that by the 2nd donut that this could be tough. Donuts 1-4 went down easy, 5-6 weren't so bad, either. I ate the first 6 in about 14 minutes, but I knew I was slowing down. The sugar was just way too much to handle at this point. You have water to wash it down, but you know that you can't just slam a few cups of water as that'll just fill you up faster, so I was just taking small sips here and there. Donuts 7-9 were kind of a blur but I knew that I was slowing way down and starting to hate life. My friend came by to see how things were and encourage me and I basically told him to STFU and get away from me. He took a few videos and photos. Somewhere around this time people started puking at various spots around the parking lot. I didn't want to puke so I just ignored it as best I could. In retrospect, puking halfway through might have been a reasonable idea.

The last 3 donuts were pure torture. Weds19 came by as he was finishing up and said this was harder than an IM. I could never imagine that something so sweet and tasty as a glazed Krispy Kreme doughnut could disgust me so much. I ate half of donut 10, put it in the box and took the last 2 and smashed them together and decided that I'd eat those first before going back to the other one. I nibbled my way through the smashed donuts holding back my gag reflex several times and saying this is so effing stupid many times. Got those down and had a half a cup of water and realized that it sort of made things easier. The last donut was basically take a bite, gulp water, repeat. When it was gone, I told my buddy that it was time to leave so I started running towards the exit.

Left the Krispy Kreme store and made it about 20 steps before I realized that gulping that water may have helped donut #12 go down, but it was also going to help donuts #1-#12 come back up. Within the first mile I puked 4 times. Then my stomach settled and I was feeling pretty good the rest of the way. I didn't break stride when puking. It was pretty relieving to puke and it felt totally natural and unimpeded at the moment. Other challengers were cheering/laughing every time someone else puked. There were piles and splatters of puke all over the road.

What would you do differently?:

Option 1: Stay home and not do the race would probably be best.

Option 2: Eat faster. Experiment more with smashing donuts together and or dunking in water. Puke when I started feeling gross during the middle to latter portions of donut consumption.
Post race
Warm down:

Watched some people puke. Laughed about how stupid of an idea this was. Drank a couple of beers a few hours later to settle things down.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

2400 calories of sugar and saturated fat.

Event comments:

If you ask me the day of the race if I'd do it again, I'd say not a chance. If you ask me today if I'll do it again, I'd say maybe. Ask me 6 months from now, who knows?

Ever since the first time I heard of this I have said someday I will do this.

Sounds sort of like drinking. Swearing it off the next morning only to go back again. Wink

Nice job. The city of Raleigh has got to love this event.
Sounds like as much vomit on the sidewalks as Mardi Gras.
So, is it on next year's calendar?

My favorite line "I realized that gulping that water may have helped donut #12 go down, but it was also going to help donuts #1-#12 come back up"

This is definitely something I could get on board with.

Good times and thanks for the vivid picture.
