Sunny
Total Time = 00m
Overall Rank = /
Age Group = M 35-39
Age Group Rank = 282/353
Pre-race routine:

Set up special needs bags (to be retrieved at the mid point of the bike and the run). Ate a big bowl of oatmeal and parked at Wal-Mart to shuttle to the starting area. Got lucky and found a bike pump to borrow in transition - and then found a short line for the john!
Event warmup:

Spit in my goggles!
Swim
  • 1h 23m 43s
  • 4224 yards
  • 01m 59s / 100 yards
Comments:

Really good swim for me. I was really good on navigation and very smooth throughout. I found myself thinking about stroke efficiency and even visualizing the next two segments of the race. Amazingly, I was even thinking about how I wished I had gotten more sleep and what I still have to get done this weekend for work. I'm still shaking my head that during my IM, I'm thinking about the office!!!
What would you do differently?:

Nada
Transition 1
  • 09m 35s
Comments:

The changing tent was wet, full, and smelly - but it was a real treat to run through a shower (to get the saltwater and sand off) and then put on fully padded cycling shorts! They wouldn't allow us to have our shoes clipped into the pedals, so it was new for me to try and run in my bike shoes. Just glad I didn't fall on my ass!
What would you do differently?:

Next time maybe I won't wear a swimsuit under my wetsuit just to shock the strippers ;)
Bike
  • 6h 19m 20s
  • 112 miles
  • 17.72 mile/hr
Comments:

Thankfully, I was honest with myself, and admitted that I was under trained. From there I decided to focus on maintaining my output and not frying my legs. I ignored my speedometer and I was still pretty sore at the end of the bike.
I also followed my nutrition/ hydration plan strictly and benefited the rest of the race.

What would you do differently?:

Not miss the crucial ong rides in the last 3 months.
Transition 2
  • 10m 50s
Comments:

A volunteer took my bike in the chute to put it on the rack. At the end of the chute another volunteer had my bag running clothes. Dry, loose running shorts and a light shirt were a real treat.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. A few minutes to change clothes was part of the plan.
Run
  • 5h 40m 10s
  • 26.2 miles
  • 12m 59s  min/mile
Comments:

Which is longer in an IM, the bike or the run? The run starts after a killer warm up (of 8 hours in my case), but the bike is a lot of miles! I haven't decided for sure, but I'm leaning toward the bike. It's pretty lonely on the bike. However, the run really takes all the guts you have left. Even walking one, running one isn't easy.
On this run, I was glad to have a long sleeve shirt to wear in the dark.
What would you do differently?:

Run more.
Post race
Warm down:

Walk. Get a massage

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Insufficient training.

Event comments:

It's still sinking in that I finished the race! I'm still in post-game critique mode, but after a bit of sleep, I'm planning to be really, really happy! I'm also looking forward to feeling good about my training again. I didn't like the pressure of feeling behind the 8 ball when I got sick or had to travel for work. That was worse than the race itself - by a long shot! Now, whatever training I do is a step forward. I don't have to measure it against an iron measuring stick!

Post race food must be harder to organize than I think, because it usually sucks. Here too. I got a marginal little burger. That's it! There were rumors of pizza, but none when I got there. In all other respects, an Ironman is a truly remarkable event. 2,000 athletes and 3,500 volunteers. (Wow, almost 2 volunteers just for me!) It's really amazing to participate in such a magnificent event. I'll have to do it again, but not right away.

Swimming
01:23:43 | 4224 yards | 01m 59s / 100yards
Age Group: 304/353
Overall: 1563/
Performance: Good
Suit: QR Super Full
Course: Two laps with a run on the beach to begin lap 2. The first lap was pretty brutal - some of the swimmers lost their minds during the swim and would cut diagonally across the pack. Now, if you suddenly felt the pounding fists of 20 other swimmers on your side, wouldn’t you look up to see why? Their loss, but it is distracting. I like the run across the beach – it gave me a chance to have a gel (had it tucked up in my sleeve) and a cup of water while I ran by 50 swimmers who decided to walk! The second lap was more spread out and I had lots of clean water. Maybe it’s different for fast swimmers, but I find that swimmers my speed are erratic and I lose more time trying draft than I get back in efficiency.

HR on the bike was the key to the day. I rode just over 20 miles in the first hour; a good pace and very easy. That gave me a feel for my pace and my energy. Then I decided that I would keep my HR below 145, which is about 85% of LT. I made one bathroom stop and one stop to fix my second bottle of perpetuem.
Wind: Headwind
Course: One huge loop. The first 12 miles out were the last 12 back in - and by afternoon, they were 12 miles of STRONG headwind. About half the course was fairly rough. A great reason to ride a carbon frame and wear well-padded shorts!

Congratulations on completing Ironman Florida!  Sounds like that first swim lap and the head winds at the end of the bike were a real challenge.  Now rest!

Way to go Brett - you're amazing!!! I'm so impressed

Sounds like you ran a smart race, and had some fun too.  And all that after a few really busy months with all that traveling for work - nice job!!  (I can't believe you were thinking about what you needed to get done for work during the swim, btw - that's gotta be the first time I've heard someone say they were thinking about work during an IRONMAN!).

Now you can have some fun with training over the winter!  Are you going to do any longer distances next summer?

So which IS longer in an Ironman - the bike or the run? Actually, it doesn't really matter since you finished both of them. Way to have a good plan and stick with it! Congratulations on finishing!!

Absolutely fantastic job to complete something that you will remember for the rest of your life. Congrats on seeing your training through to the point that you were able to finish with the presence of mind to even want pizza? (I envision myself crawling down the shoot looking for an IV ...)

Well done.
