Well the Doc says it's RSV and that she doesn't think I'll be recovered enough to run Saturday. I'd pretty much been resigning myself to that today

Oh TJ! I'm so sorry to hear this!  {{hugs}}

Take care of yourself and remember that your fitness does not end this weekend.  You can find another spring ultra if you like or take your fitness and conquer another completely different adventure.

We're thinking of you!

That sucks! I feel your pain. I have ended up sick before I think 4 out of the last 6 major races I've done, including Vietnam 70.3 last year. (I keep telling myself that can't happen for the same race two years in a row, can it?? Wait a minute, it did once....). And I very rarely get sick, usually once or twice a year at most. It just seems to coincide with taper for some reason. In your case, probably a bug you picked up on the plane or something--they're filthy. Pretty much our entire foreign staff, and many students, gets sick within a week after Christmas break every year, probably due to bugs picked up while flying.

Hope you can find some good races to put all that training to good use!

I'm sorry to see this TJ. The flip side of it is that you are already looking into whatever is next for you. I am really glad that you are moving forward and I hope that you find something soon that will keep you moving that way!

Well to complicate matters I woke up feeling pretty good today. So far most of the symptoms are gone except the headache. I'm sitting here contemplating alternate races and keep wondering about running tomorrow's :/

Yikes! That's a tough one!  Completely up to you - you know your body and what you want to do.

My cautionary story - is that I trained really hard to break four hours in the marathon back in 2008 and two weeks before my DH did a HIM in the pouring rain and inevitably got sick right after. I woke up the day before with a chest cough. It didn't feel too bad and I went and did it anyway. It was a complete mistake. I pushed on to about 16k and i knew it wasn't going to be good. I felt bad and I ended up walking the whole second half to a personal worst that still stands. It sucked. I am not sure today even that i would do anything differently but it was a pretty miserable experience on a really beautiful September day. (My running buddy did do sub-4 that day)

So, i guess i am saying in this case it's probably better to be cautious than to be out there on the trail - BUT - you may actually feel fine and it would be fine. That's a tough one. Good luck with whatever you decide!

Yeah, sure could use a crystal ball right now. I told my doc the race would be tough enough without the extra challenge of being ill.

It sucks to miss a race, what with all of the training, planning and cost involved. I'm sorry to hear that!

If it were me, I'm pretty sure pushing myself in that condition would set back subsequent training pretty badly. If you do decide to go forward, good luck!

Stacey, don't feel bad, I had to look it up, too.  TJ, I'm really sorry to hear you will be missing this race, but from what I read, resting and not doing the race seem like a good (if not liked) course of action.  The last thing you need is for it to progress to pneumonia, then the fun local ultras you were eyeing up could be off the table, too.  Do take care and get better soon!

That is terrible news. You really just need to see how you are feeling and be careful about doing the race. I didn't need to look up RSV because I had a nephew that had it when he was about 6 months old. He was in the hospital for a few weeks hooked up to a ventilator, but is fine now at 4. There are a few advantages to getting older, at least it won't require a hospital stay!!

RSV= respiratory syncytial l virus.  I adults, not serious, just miserable...in kids, particularly former premies from NICU ones it's bad news.  They decompemsate badly...

That is so unfortunate.  I think that if you started feeling better 2 or 3 days before the race I'd be much more inclined to go for it but with just starting to feel better the day before that would be iffy in my opinion.  I hope that this all works out best for you.

Lots of people getting excited.

I don't care what the bike course is, but it better be 112 miles and they better have the dang race!

As big as the economic impact of ironman is to local cities it really surprises me

I just got "April Fooled".  Was looking through my e-mail and came across a message from Rudy Project thanking me for my recent order.  I failed to see anything beyond that and was just thinking "what the heck?!?"  Clicked on the link to view my order and was duped into seeing the latest sale.  Went back to original screen and saw that my order was for a Rudy Project puppy.  Had to laugh.

Even Dr. DS2, who is always willing to tell me to HTFU, says don't do it. So, as discretion is the better part of valor, I'm not running tomorrow. It's going to be tough though. We are still going to Moab and my running gear is packed. :,(

Also, it hasn't escaped my thought process that Yanti would say don't do it, but would probably run it if she were in the situation

Find a mentor. Make a list of at least three people that you could approach for help, list your specific needs and then be courageous enough to begin asking.
