Total Time = 3h 37m 35s
Overall Rank = 2860/3800
Age Group = 30-34
Age Group Rank = 138/153
Pre-race routine:

Slept on and off ~4 hours. Got up, showered, and walked down to transition area to set up. Ate a clif bar, drank some Propel. Tried not to throw up.
Event warmup:

Transition area to swim start was 3/4 mile walk, so that was my warm up. I stood around with Mike and Karl until their waves went off, then Lisa and Sue. Got in the water to get the cold water factor over with.
Swim
  • 46m 41s
  • 1640 yards
  • 02m 51s / 100 yards
Comments:

I HATE the swim!! I freaked out about bouy 3, stopped and started looking for a boat to haul my butt back to shore!! The closest boat was another 2 bouys away, so I figured if I had to swim that much farther, I might as well do the damn race!! I knew I'd get too much garbage from Fromer if I didn't do the swim!!

I sighted really well and kept along the bouys. I didn't want to swim any extra!! Going around the bouys was tricky. I got swam over more times than I could count. That wasn't fun.

After I rounded the final turn, the current was against me. I started swallowing lots of water, which wasn't helping my already sick belly. I thought I could make it in, but nope! I treaded water and puked. The seagulls were chasing me in the rest of the way!! :)

When I finally got to the stairs I grabbed the railing and it seemed like forever to get my feet underneath me to lug my big tail up. I've never been so glad to get out of water in all my life!!
What would you do differently?:

Swim better.
Transition 1
  • 04m 16s
Comments:

Found my bike, got the wetsuit off, grabbed a bag of Sharkies, ate an Energise, ready to go.
What would you do differently?:

Bike
  • 1h 25m
  • 25 miles
  • 17.65 mile/hr
Comments:

Forgot that Mike put my cleat covers on my shoes. I was on the bike pedaling best I could, but couldn't clip in. THEN I remembered the freaking covers. Amazing how much easier it is to clip in once they were off!! Had to laugh about how stupid I looked!!

The wind was picking up, and I knew the bike was going to have to good to make up for my pathetic swim. I didn't maintain a good speed considering the turns and winds. I was too timid in my turns.

My gears slipped almost the entire time.
What would you do differently?:

Be stronger in the turns
Transition 2
  • 03m 43s
Comments:

Got into T2 fine, ran out and forgot my freaking race belt. Had to turn around and go back for it.
What would you do differently?:

Not be stupid!
Run
  • 1h 17m
  • 6.2 miles
  • 12m 25s  min/mile
Comments:

PATHETIC! I thought my swim was bad, but this was awful! My belly was killing me from the swim and I just couldn't run. I walked a good majority of the run, stopping to throw up 3 times.

I saw Mike, Lisa and Sue on the return and wished I was on that side of the course! Ran with Christine for awhile.
What would you do differently?:

Quit throwing up!!
Post race
Warm down:

As I came into the shoot my kids were waiting for me. They crossed the finish line with me.

I grabbed an ice cold cloth and stuck it on my head. Man! Was that a great feeling!! Walked around and visited with the people who came to cheer for me, then went to the BT tent to find the keg.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Vomit

Event comments:

This is a very well put together race and I can't wait to do it again next year!!

I think you should get 2 medals for finishing after puking 4 times! Talk about effort to inspire, darlin'. Takes a lot of cajones to keep going, and you never wavered. My hat is off to you. You are amazing!

Wendi - Way to hang in there...you finished well & should be proud. As for the cleat covers, sounds like something I would will do I'm sure!

Good to hear you completed the course safely, I witnessed a nasty crash on one our first few turns & heard of others at the bike transition. I wish I had been able to meet you & other BTR's, unfortunately we got delayed by traffic arriving Friday evening ...Once again, great job!

Wendi, you did great.  All that puking just made you more lightweight, aerodynamic and soforth.  I was so psyched I got to hear them announce your name when you finished (I don't even remember hearing my name!)

What an awesome job pushing thru even while losing stomach contents!

Sharon

P.S.  Thanks so much for organizing us and that great pasta party Saturday.

With all that puke in the water I am glad my wave was before yours. That is hard core, to finish after all that. One barf for me and that's it. I didn't know they made cleat covers! Great dinner you put together Saturday night. Thanks!!

Maybe you were puking because all that food was touching in your stomach.    So glad you stuck it out on the swim.  I wish it would have been warmer so we could see your tri-thong.  What more can I say than, you rock.  Great dinner - thanks for putting it together.  Thanks for being my wife's identical freaking twin.  You and Mike are awesome.  Don't know how you're going to top it all next year, but somehow I get the feeling that you will.  Keep those pipe's wrapped and insulated now.

BTW, Next time, I'll be keeping a closer eye on my vodka.

GREAT JOB, WENDI!

I'm sooo glad you stuck it out on the swim.  You made me *PROUD*!

An experience like that will only make you STRONGER.  I am also sure you felt overwhelming satisfaction yourself!!  Certainly sounds like a GREAT race.  You are going to kick some major arse in your SPRINT!  Sprint?  Ha.  CAKE compared to an OLY!

See you in June!  We'll work on that swimming!

Ralph, reading your race report, I'm realizing how amazing what one person can do when they persevere!

There were a few times where you wanted and could have stopped, but kept on keeping on! You've pushed your mental and physical limits further than I think I can imagine doing myself - truly inspiring!

I did have to laugh at the seagulls following you though after puking in the water!! Looks like the Sharkies settled your tummy though at T1! Good to hear after the race and multiple pukings, you were headed for the keg after the finish line Atta girl!

I wonder what was better - seeing the finish line; seeing your kids at the finish line; or knowing that soon you could have a beer on a virtually empty stomach...after racing your ass off?

Lesson I'll take with me to my next race: leave the cleat covers home - I can see myself doing the same thing....oh, that, and set up my own transition!

GREAT RACE WENDI, and CONGRATULATIONS! Sounds like everyone enjoyed your hospitality (including the seagulls! )

Edit to add: You look great post-race in the included pic, couldn't have been that bad! You rock!
