Spirit of Racine - Triathlon1/2 Ironman

View Member's Race Log
Racine, WI

Sunny
Total Time = 6h 15m 34s
Overall Rank = 464/1073
Age Group = M25-29
Age Group Rank = 47/65
Pre-race routine:

Up at 4:15, drove to race site. Got there just after transition opened. Prepped the bike. Thought to myself "man, this is effing HUMID"...
Event warmup:

Walked 3/4 mile down the beach to the swim start. Got in about 10 min or so of easy swimming to get blood flowing in the arms.
Swim
  • 32m 50s
  • 1930 meters
  • 01m 42s / 100 meters
Comments:

Did okay on the swim. Held back a bit, didn't want to blow it all on the swim. Stopwatch was 31 min at the water exit, but there was a good long run from there to the transition area, so official race split is longer.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe go a bit faster. Was able to draft a good bit, but kept loosing the fast feet.
Transition 1
  • 01m 30s
Comments:

Good T1. Was out pretty fast, and the bike rack was still mostly full except for only a handfull of spots. Woohoo! :)
What would you do differently?:

Not much, went good.
Bike
  • 2h 51m 38s
  • 56 miles
  • 19.58 mile/hr
Comments:

Went through 6 bottles of fluid on the bike ( 1 perpetuem, 5 water ). It was freakin' hot out there. The winds sucked, but weren't unbearable. Road was really nasty in a couple sections, but made pretty decent time.
What would you do differently?:

Work on hills more. Get more aero wheels. I really felt the wind today. Urgh.
Transition 2
  • 01m 47s
Comments:

Smooth and easy T2. Knew the run was going to be hot, so I took my fuel belt. Dumped last bit of extra water over my running hat.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing, except maybe keep a cooler with icewater and have my hat soaking in there for the run. Ohh, that would have felt good.
Run
  • 2h 47m 48s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 12m 49s  min/mile
Comments:

This run was BRUTAL. By the time I was on the course, the Heat Index was reportedly over 110 already. It definitely felt it.

The heat lead ultimately to my problems with the run. I finished the first lap in right around an hour. I walked every aid station, poured cups of ice down my jersey, drank water, took my endurolytes on schedule. Still couldn't hack it. Stomach stopped working, I couldn't handle more than water. I tried a shot of gel once, but my stomach was extremely unhappy. I was already dehydrated at that point I'm guessing.

I'd taken a gel shot about 15 min before the end of the bike, which got me through the first lap, but inability to get anything more down during the run and I just ran out of gas on the second lap. Added 45 minutes to my lap time on that. I was forced to a run-walk-run-walk. Tried to do more running than walking, but there wasn't much left.
What would you do differently?:

Not sure. Need to come up with a better super hot weather hydration/nutrition plan. Water + gel + endurlytes didn't work today. I think if I'd had my fuel belt filled with something like HEED, I might have been able to keep it down.
Post race
Warm down:

Finished, stopwatch had right around 6:15.

Grabbed an icewater, poured it over my head. Grabbed another and tried to drink it. Couldn't manage much. Sat down under a tree, which turned quickly to laying down. Decided to try a sip of gatorade as it was on hand, to get something more than water. Big mistake. It promptly came back up "return to sender". Okay, this wasn't good, so went to med tent ( which was quite a busy place today ). They immediatly decided I was overheated ( DUH! ). So I got a table ( no beds ), and bags of ice packed around me, ice cold towels draped over. No IV though, I just needed to get cool first. Spent about 45 minutes like that, changing out towels and ice bags when they melted/got warm. At that point, was feeling human again, so sat up and asked for water. They eval'ed me again, decided I could have some water at this point. Made me stay another 15 min after I drank it to make sure it was staying down. It did. Feeling hungry at this point so I managed to get over to the food tent and got a bite of some stuff. Drank a whole lot more water, took some more endurolytes.

Weighed myself tonight when we got home. Dressed, I weighed in at 169. I was 172 on Saturday morning. Yoiks! I was still down 4 lbs or so and I'd been drinking and eating since!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Heat, dehydration.

Event comments:

Race was good. The weather just played havok with everybody. Many of the pros that were in the heat of the day on the run had visits to the med-tent too. Quite a few AGers came in. The problem seemed to be more that people couldn't cool down after the race once they finished and couldn't stuff ice from aid stations everywhere.

Wow! You had quite a day, Core! Sounds like it was a very challenging day so congrats on getting through it.

Bottom line? A HIM under your belt? Very well done, my friend.

Great job finishing despite crappy conditions, Chris!  I know you wanted more, but on a hot day, there isn't much you can do!  Trust me, I live in heat central.  Heat always wins.

Congrats!

OMG I cannot believe what that heat did to you!  Also, did you know that you swim so fast it makes me sick??  Your time is almost the same as my (1500) St. Anthony's swim!!You are SO FAST!

Yesterday I had a great 56 mile ride, but of course slower than you, and NO WAY could I have run 13.1 miles after.  I dream of someday having a bike split like that over such a long distance.

So despite the heat, you had an amazing first HIM!  A really strong performance you should be very proud of.  Congrats!

Chris, that is one for the mind, body and soul.  Yeah, some things didn't go according to plan.  But, you finished.  I can only imagine the pain you endured during those last 6.5 miles.  You fought off the demons telling you to throw in the towel and completed the race under great duress.  That, in and of itself, is an awesome victory.

Hey Chris you DID IT!! You stuck with it through to the very end  - despite the heat and all the thoughts that must have been trying to pull you down. All the work and preparation, meant you were able to keep things going well, pushing through to that last loop of the run - and still not stopping!

Hope you are feeling really proud of yourself today! We are.

I heard it was tough from my cousin watching her son race. Great job getting through it. Glad you survived and are taking a rest day. I did the FL 1/2 yesterday in hot weather but couldn't imagine a heat index of 110.

I was thinking about you guys all day yesterday. What a crappy day. I could barely breathe, and I was just walking around my yard. (!!!) I know the conditions sucked. I'm glad you came through alive and well, and lived to race another day!

Lightening fast swim and bike times... great transitions... and the run? Well, it would have been like running through a convection oven. Even the breeze was HOT yesterday.

Nice going, Chris... Be proud of yourself... that race even made the TODAY show this AM, demonstrating how HOT it's been around here in the Midwest. Showed lots of people in the med tent with IV's....

Congratulations.

Great Job! I'm sorry I didn't hook up with any BTers ... did you all meet at the finish. I hung around until about 2:45 - 3 pm, then went out or Razor Fitness and took them up on their offer of showers! That was one brutal race, between the swells in the lake, the wind on the bike and the heat on the run, I was glad when it was over. I'll do a RR when results are posted, but you did a great job! Congratulations!

Hey Chris   Yur swim and bike were kickass. You are my idol in the water!!! The run was like running through Hades...it could have been one of Dante's circles or something!   There was no way to plan or train for that.

You finished, you did awesome, and you are mentally tougher for it   You are going to ROCK Lake Genva, I can't wait to see ya there

Wow, what a tough run! Good job getting through it. I was also racing that morning in Door County, and the conditions were hot and humid there too. I only did a sprint though, so I wasn't on the course near as long as you. Great job!

Chris, you guys made the paper in Sarasota, FL!  There was an article about the race and the hot conditions, noting that a lot of the participants suffered heat related illnesses.

You should be proud of your finish!

Good race in tough conditions Chris. Hey it's rough when it gets hot like that. I know where you come from on the stomach issues. Yesterday after a certain point I could only tolerate water and not much else...and only small sips of that. When you come up with that hot weather plan, let us know. What works best for me is just keeping your blood temperature down as low as possible. Cold water on my head works wonders...I don't think you can start doing that too soon.

Congrats on toughing it out!

Congrats Chris. You rock. Sorry about the run. It was freakin' hot. It would have been impossible not to be dehydrated with that hot weather. I'm so proud of you. You trained and worked out plans and you stuck to them. You should be really proud. And your swim was super fast and so was your bike. Job well done. O!
