Comments: First mile was 7:04. Second mile, the bridge, was 7:15. Then for the next 8 miles I was consistently between 6:50-7. I was a bit sore at the beginning, and definitely not as "fresh" as I was at MB...but I still felt "good". By mile 10, I was averaging sub 7 minute miles. At the half way point, I was 1:33. Mile 18, I was projected to finish at 3:13. THEN, I started tightening up, and began "sucking air". I persevered for the rest of the race. Miles 13-16 were an out and back. My amazing sister - who hop scotched around the course - said I looked "good" going in, but when I came back... not so good! By mile 20, I was GASSED. From here on, I hit EVERY aid station. I walked thru, had a gatorade, and began "running" upon exiting. My sister told me after the race that she was surprised I finished! And actually, I was too! The last 6 miles were MURDER. I was so out of for the last 7 miles... I kept forgetting what mile I was on! Worse, I had placed gels in my socks (E Gels) because I had no pocket space...the frickin' things are HUGE. Unfortunately, they fell out without me knowing :(. So from miles 17-26 I had NO gels. UGH. What would you do differently?: I attacked the race. No doubt there... but in hindsight I should have set a lower goal. I don't think I'm ready to hold 7's for a mary (at least on a moderate course), and I paid the price today! Also... I attacked hills, and that cost me. There weren't many, but they were steep and I didn't back down! As a result, they took some "life" out of me!! If I would have gone low 8's or high 7's from the beginning, I think I could have held that pace throughout and maybe have been able to pick up near the end. Post race
Warm down: Walked around. The race finished along the river. It was beautiful day to runa mary!! Event comments: I didn't go as fast as I had wanted. But I am still pleased. I went 3:51 at Detroit this past Fall. A 15 minute drop. Progress is progress :) Last updated: 2005-04-10 12:00 AM
