Total Time = 2h 05m 28s
Overall Rank = 1021/1171
Age Group = Female 55-59
Age Group Rank = 13/21
Pre-race routine:

Bagel and banana for breakfast and headed for the race at 4:30 AM. I thought I would be nervous but I was too excited. Thank goodness Kelly was here to keep me grounded.
Event warmup:

Kelly and I swam about 200 meters. The water felt so good today.
Swim
  • 18m 35s
  • 750 meters
  • 02m 29s / 100 meters
Comments:

I was in the third wave and very anxious to get started. I took a kick to the head in the first 30 seconds, swallowed a ton of water and came up gasping for air. Scary stuff for a first timer. It took a few minutes to get calm enough to move forward. Once I got it together the rest of my swim was strong and I was smiling when I came out of the water. Jeff caught up with me and ran the trek from the beach to TA (I think about a minute and a half).
What would you do differently?:

Hmmmmm ... it's tough getting through the first part of a swim when so many people hit the water at once. Sometimes you get kicked. It sucks but not much I could do about it.
Transition 1
  • 02m 33s
Comments:

Lots of room for improvement!
What would you do differently?:

Leave my bike pump in the transition area.
Bike
  • 1h 13m 16s
  • 17.2 miles
  • 14.09 mile/hr
Comments:

Could the flat tire fairy please visit someone else for a change. I got my bike out of transition and looked down as I was mounting and realized I had a tire blowout. NO! NO! NO! Unfortunately it took me 16 minutes to gather my wits and get it taken care of. I would still be sitting on the side of the road feeling sorry for myself if it hadn't been for a young man named Bill who appeared out of no where. He had a leg brace and was supported by crutches and he said "Do you want to race or quit?" I want to race.

The good news is I did pretty dang good when I finally got on the course. My bike time would be 57:16 if I didn't have to count that 16 minutes and my final time would have been 1:49:28. I am very happy with that.
What would you do differently?:

Reduce the tire pressure on hot days. Did I mention that I've been training in some severely cold weather this year and today Denver set a new record high of 97 degrees.
Transition 2
  • 01m 52s
Comments:

Lots of room for improvement!
Run
  • 29m 10s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 09m 25s  min/mile
Comments:

I could tell my HR was a little high when I started this so I tried to slow down a little. I felt like I was running about an 11 min pace so I was pleasantly surprised to find out it was under 10. I'll take that on a hot day like today! Jeff and Kelly caught me on the last 1/4 mile and ran with me. I had a teeny tiny kick about the last eighth mile and left them in the dust (heh, heh).
What would you do differently?:

I need to work on hydration. I was so concerned about not drinking enough that by the time I hit the run I had a sloshy stomach.
Post race
Warm down:

Water, banana and walking around. Oh my gosh it felt good to come across that finish line.

Event comments:

It was such an awesome day. My first triathlon and my daughter came out from Chicago to do it with me. We had sisters, grand-kids, nephews, daughters, all kinds of relatives lining the course to cheer for us. Jeff, my strength/core trainer from 24 Hour Fitness was there, Coach Mary and Coach Charley, lots of TNT friends, Beka and Kelvin, amazing support. My cup runneth over.

I had a flat on my 2nd Tri but like you I did not quit. i don't like the kicking myself so I go to the side or the back, then I catch up and pass. I wish I could get a teeny tiny kick at a race. Good job!

Congratulations on finishing your first tri! Looks like you got the full experience with the full combat swim and the flat. That aside, nice race - sounds like you enjoyed it.

Congrats on a great race!

You showed what being a triathlete is all about adjusting to the circustances (swim & flat) and pushing yourself to do your best!

You would have been 18+ mph on the bike in your first tri....that totally rocks!

After all that swim/transition/bike/transition you put together a great run. It shows what you are made of ...all good stuff!

I see that weekend in the garage changing tires came in handy even though I wish it didn't!

Congratulations on becoming a triathlete with friends, family & loved ones surrounding and supporting you!

You Rock Becky~

Congrats triathlete!  I can't wait till I can join you with that designation.  And by the way you've definitely convinced me that I need to work on changing flats!

NICE JOB and CONGRATS!  I'm sorry to hear about your flat, but look at it this way - at least you know you can deal with it now   And hopefully it won't happen again for a VERY long time!  Great job on your FIRST race   Keep up the good work and hope to see you out there again!

Great job on your first race!!! Even with the flat tire, you did an awesome job, and after having to deal with that at your first race, all your future races will seem so much easier

 CONGRATULATIONS!

I am excited for you!! You did well in the race, even with a big obstacle. I am glad you did not quit when things were not going well, as "stuff" happens in a lot of races.

Totally cool that your daughter was there, and the TNT coaches too!

Congratulations Triathlete!!!  Soooooo not fair to have a flat on your first race, but at least you got it out of the way.  Sounds great to have such a cheering section and have your daughter come out to do this w/ you.  You'll need to frame that medal and your race number for posterity

Congratulations on a great first race! And way to persevere despite the flat tire. That is so not fair to happen in your first race, but you handled it wonderfully and went on to ride hard and finish strong. Way to go! Great job, triathlete!!!

I'm so proud of you Mom. It says a lot about your character and drive that you kept going after such difficulty. And in your first tri to boot. And you were so fast when you take out the lost time for the flat. I better watch out because you're going to give me a run for my money being so speedy like that. I'm just glad you're not in my age group.

Awesome race!!!

Really great job on your first tri!  You clearly have a huge fan club, measured by the number of people cheering you on!  I'm glad that you enjoyed that medal -- Barry and I talked about it some months ago, and I told him that I thought a lot of folks doing their first tri would prefer the medal to a coffee mug (last year's Finisher award).  It really is a great accomplishment (especially after being punished at the swim start into the sun), and you should be really proud of your finish.  I am!

Congratulations on persisting despite the flat tire!  Sounds like a great race.  You've gotten all of the major disasters out of the way and survived them all ( kicked on the swim, flat tire, sloshy stomach... ).   Your next race should be a breeze!
